I watches the show and admired her for being so successful in such a tough industry, how she helps her colleague and how she juggles work and family.. I didn't like the bashing of people's way of life and religion. I am not Jewish but although she may have not been happy it doesn't mean anyone not living your current life is a "fundamentalist". She says that her past life was like a prison cause everything was forced on to her, yet she uses the same method of "it has to be my way only and I know best" with her family.

Julia, my first time wearing pants was 12 yrs ago, traveling to another state just to walk in freedom. While I have a few old pieces left, I gave six bag-fulls away to gemach. I still love my floor-length jean skirt, which has never gone out of fashion. I'm so proud of you for your fearlessness. Unless someone goes through this, they will never understand. I wish you endless closets full of all the fashion you desire.

As a 5 foot tall person with way too much closet space and high ceilings, I watched this and wondered why she didn’t patent her closet designs and sell that as a system...if they were sold and priced in modular segments to be selected, as needed, I would absolutely consider purchasing her closet system . Also, while she lives in a NY Penthouse with designer clothes, I live in St Louis, Missouri where great size closets are easily available but we usually don't have the NY prices because we don’t need to dress up as often as New Yorkers.

Several years ago Burberry created quite a negative stir when it was discovered that they burned hundreds of millions of dollars of unsold merchandise because they did not want the wrong people to have access to their Brand.
This woman has every right to do what she wants with her life and her billionaire husband's money. But when she said she burned her old clothes that was beyond offensive. She probably had tons of clothes that could have been donated to less fortunate folks even in her old community that could have made good use of them.
Real fashion companies are doing everything they can to give back to society, the environment, and reuse used clothes even for insulation materials.
Since she seems to be all about branding she should rethink her ethical footprint. That is if she cares.

Those in the orthodox community previously asserted Kamala Harris rose to power solely off of her relations to a man.. it’s as if they genuinely don’t believe a woman can accomplish feats based off of her own efforts and merit. Women are deemed impure (that’s why they can’t read the Torah), intellectually disadvantaged as opposed to a man (that’s why they cannot learn religious doctrines that determine every facet of ones life written by guess who? Men exclusively and cover all things from “laws of daily living” to periods), and innately immoral, as “men are predisposed to see, women to show” (second reason as to why they cannot learn religious doctrines). Who determines who can and cannot do anything? A man aka a rabbi.

This woman is lying about her upbringing. She’s portraying a life she truly didn’t live. I know people who grew up with her and said she had a wonderful life. Also she did not grow up extreme ultra orthodox like she makes out to be. She grew up more modern than that and it’s an huge insult that she is lying. She is portraying the religious Jewish community to be messed up, but in fact many people are plenty happy with their lives and wouldn’t change it for the world.

I don't think you should be calling her experiences a lie based on what others living that lifestyle believe she experienced. She does explain that the people in her community were raised to not question the system. So of course they think she was living a good life. But that life was just not for her and she felt constricted so she had to get out. Dismissing someone's life's experiences like that is not right.

It's extremely insensitive of you and those people who think they knew her to downright dismiss her claims altogether. Have you learned nothing from the me too movement? Just alone in the second/third episode she goes to stores in monsey where she feels she will be judged for being dressed a certain way. I go in pants and shirt sleeves all the time there and no one ever looks at me or judges me. The show is very clearly portraying the religious community to be horrible and it needs to stop. I feel like we need to talk about how exaggerated her story is I’m scarred people who are not Jewish might believe her..
So the story about how woman who don’t dress modestly get abused in hell and shit Is not true maybe someone crazy person told her that but no it’s not a thing in Judaism .. also she made it sound like our religion is some sort of a cult u need to run from..this religion is actually all about excepting and respect it’s actually the most important mitzva “don’t do what u don’t want to be done to u” “and u loved your people/friends/family like it was yourself” .and after that is “respect your parent’s”.(also because they teach u values like this when your a child your more patient and caring for other people from a very young age)
Woman also can dress how ever they want and be respected especially in Israel where man are very modern compared to other countries.
Also to dress modestly is not to shame a woman, or to not be looked at by man. it’s actually because in the tora woman are holy and god cherish them, and so it’s a hole thing..about keeping them like something precious and rare. And also something about, by not really over care about your outside look and more of tuning inward and evolving more on what’s important.
*Also we need to remember their are extreme people in every religion maybe she experienced something like that so I don’t really know*
Overall I think she’s an extraordinary woman I just hope she will use her platform to promote positive look on Jewish people.☺️

There is no one forcing, chasing, or punishing people who don't keep the Jewish law. The religious Jews practice Judaism because they love God and they made a covenant with God. Judaism also teaches how non-Jews are perfectly fine as long as they respect God's name, live moral lives, establish a just society, etc. There is so much spirituality and depth in the values and teachings of Judaism, way richer than only pursuing money, fame, designer bags, etc. Do any of the mainstream TV shows and movies mention these aspects?

You don’t have to leave your religion because it WASNT FOR YOU, to become this. She exaggerates everything she says. You’re allowed to sing, dance, you have the freedom to do whatever you want as a woman in the Jewish community. We have women who are doctors, judges, lawyers, cops, you name it, we have it. If you left religion because of your marriage and how “restricting” it was then make it about that. Not flip the script and make it about religion. and no. The Unorthodox series is inspired by a different woman who left an Orthodox community in NY, but no one chased after her, kidnapped her, or gave her a gun to kill herself like the fictional character Moishe did. A lot of Julia's claims, her show, and the show Unorthodox are not based on the truth.

And, when you say do deny (deprive?) yourself of Judaism is to deny oneself a happy life that just adds proof to the fact many believe they hold supreme authority, infallible, and hold a monopoly on all things good, truth, and morals. That’s simply untrue. I lived there frankly and although there are many things awry systemically, life was miserable in a right wing modern orthodox community where in middle school I had struggles with wanting to live due to the expression and authenticity I was deprived of.

The religious Jews practice Judaism because they love God and they made a covenant with God. Judaism also teaches how non-Jews are perfectly fine as long as they respect God's name, live moral lives, establish a just society, etc. There is so much spirituality and depth in the values and teachings of Judaism. Julia dear, i saw your Netflix series,( I'm from Israel) and i loved it very much. I suport your opinion 100% about the extreme religious jewish way of life. This series is very important for everyone to watch, learn and raise awareness about this complicated subject and maybe it will even make a change! I'm sure YOU will help lots of woman get out of emotionally dangerous life they can't tollerate. Thank you for being the great and loving person you are. Irit levy from Israel

Two articles of Maimonides principles of the Jewish faith are the belief in ultimate reward and punishment and the resurrection of the dead. Perforce a Torah observant (Orthodox) Jew firmly believes in the afterlife.!

Hi I’m a Jewish from Israel so from a lot of knowledge I can tell u almost every thing she said was misleading and untrue growing up very religious I was taught that all Jewish people will go to heaven and that god accept us no matter what..

In The Torah it says that every single jew has a place in the world to come. We definitely do Believe in the the afterlife we believe it is actually the true destination and this life is a hallway to get there. We don’t speak like that we don’t talk about hell that way if it ever is discussed it’s to help us steer away from evil and chose well. God only wants the best for us.
