Follow Julia Haart, Elite World Group CEO and a former member of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, and her adult kids in this reality series.
Nothing against the family, but something is off about Netflix with them consistently exploiting the Jewish culture in a negative light yet focusing on positive “representation” when it comes to the other cultures.I mean Netflix if your really out here to bring positive representation do it all the way.
Yes!
Speaking as a Jewish person myself, I don’t think there’s much positivity to be shown about the Ultra Orthodox community as a whole
@@Awakening_Sunshine agreed. It’s not painting a negative light it’s just being real.
@@strugglingcollegestudent exactly
Agreed
I'm not Jewish , the way julia throws an entire town under the bus is BRAZEN.
I really wanted to like this show but something feels off with them especially their mother, and then i went on some forums it turns out many jewish people who knew them before fame (neighbors, family friends, etc) can attest that they were NOT living an ultra orthodox life... for example the younger sister claims women in monsey aren't allowed to play sports or dance but then in another episode there's a shot of her sports medals from school and her mom also mentions that their grandma used to be a ballet dancer. like they can't even keep their stories straight
They lived in multiple Jewish communities. Miriam first attended bais yaakov, a society in which sports and bikes are not allowed (by old generally horrific men called rabbis). Then she identified the issue and transferred to a more liberal school called maayanot which is modern orthodox and did allow sports etc. it’s called nuance. It’s part of the human existence.
@@sophielee7797 I went to a Bais yaakov and for a field trip we went biking and boating. my principal was one of those people you call a horrific rabbi. That rabbi has been nothing but wonderful to me. and there's also a rooftop on my school with a basket ball court for use for the entire community which he makes sure to paint in funky colors just so we students have fun with it. watch what you say please.
@@sophielee7797 if you don't know what you're talking about please don't open your mouth and embarass yourself.
Hey - if you read up on Julia's background - she was not born into the ultra orthodox community - her parents moved into it when she was about 9 - this explains her grandmother being a prima ballerina. Also, nice people gives kids medals for everything lol some of those medals are probably from participating in something like a cup stacking race haha they're just memorabilia, calm down detective.
@@sophielee7797 You know nothing about American Yeshivish families Miriam Haart was playing sports with her neighbors since she was a young child . Bais Yaakov schools allow the girls to play sports and ride bikes
Miriam talks in a very scripted way. Just feels unnatural
Good call
She was the worst on the show
@@Fourtune1 omg i forgot about him 💀
In reality, she’s probably answered these questions 100 times so it may seem scripted but the truth.
Have some empathy, I totally agree but don't need to broadcast this thought because there's a good chance there's a reasonable explanation - some people just really don't shine on camera / feel unnatural talking to a camera and need to prepare. Also, she's a young person going through a lot of change in life - a lot of people at this age go through socially anxious periods and for all you know this way of presenting could be a symptom of social anxiety which is a horribly hard thing to deal with.
“My levels of kosher” lol
There's a middle ground there. If they're eating in non kosher restaurants or food without a hechsher but avoiding nonkosher meat, I see no reason to laugh at them.
@@SmidBeach dude if it ain’t slaughtered properly it ain’t kosher even if it’s beef it’s just like pork
@@SmidBeach Yeah, that's not Halachically accurate. Even if you think you're just having vegetables at a nonkosher restaurant, you have no idea what they came in contact with, and they could have been prepped in an oven with other nonkosher foods, or with nonkosher utensils.
@@FayeIL She could be talking being from Monsey Not Cholov Yisroel or Yoshon.

I'm far from religious but to say you're Modern orthodox with a tank top lol🤣

@@shainaduannee5730 debatable
She can choose whatever she wants to wear and be modern orthodox!
In answering the question is there anything she misses from the community, Miriam makes no intellectual sense at all. She says that she felt she had a purpose when she was part of the community and now she doesn't feel like she has a purpose anymore, and then goes on to say that the way she feels now is "empowering." It's literally not possible to feel empowered with the direct cause being the feeling of not having a purpose (in life.) Just this statement of hers alone shows how much she's playing follow the leader with Julia being the leader and she, Miriam, being the follower. She's so brainwashed that she's not even thinking about what she's saying anymore or if her thoughts are making any sense.
She's saying that at one point her purpose in life was completely chosen for her and on a fundamental level it can feel fulfilling to have a purpose in life regardless of what it is or how you came to it - this is human nature. Many women feel this way about unplanned pregnancies - they didn't know this would be their purpose but they accept it and embrace it. However, in Miriam's case the purpose bestowed upon her did not, over time, bring her enough joy to balance out the feeling of being restricted. Then she expands on her thoughts on the subject of "purpose" and is explaining that not having a predetermined purpose is "hectic" (I.e. uncertain, scary at times) but to her, it feels a lot more empowering to have no purpose with the opportunity to create her own purpose in her own time and way, than to have her purpose chosen for her. I hope that helps you understand. Maybe she didn't recite an essay to help hold your hand through the nuance but she did make sense given the context that she assumes the audience has. This context, I think, was missed by you. That’s on you. As for her being a follower - she’s very young. I think she inherited her mother’s style of presenting these beliefs but these beliefs and feelings are undoubtedly her own. The older she gets, the more “her” she creates, the more she will become her own brand of these concepts. Give her a break - we’re all human - don’t be a jerk.

Top comment for real
Jewish people are brainwashed are you joking??? All Jewish people play follow the leader which is their religious leaders who brainwash y’all. Because I’m gonna guess that you’re Jewish. Her mom is trying to unbrainwash her. She’s trying to make it to where she has her own thoughts and she does Jewish people don’t have their own thoughts y’all all play follow the leader and have to do the right thing or I’m guessing y’all get shunned. She doesn’t get shunned by her mother.
And this goes for all religions not just Jewish people everybody who is in a religion is brainwashed.

Waiting for the day when Benjamin and Shlomo finally admit they're really into each other.
ROBERT NEEDS HIS OWN SHOW!!!! 💙💚 pleeeeeez!!!!
Batsheva wears very revealing clothes, but she can’t wear pants?
Show is fake she’s been wearing pants for years before the show was filmed
Also for girls not to wear pants is not because of modesty, it is because women and men are are not allowed to wear each other’s clothing (in ultra orthodoxy, pants is considered a men’s clothing).
Lmao ikr the entire show she wasnt modest once but jeans are forbidden
@@BS-vu2sh no, that’s not the reason- if that were the case, women would not even wear pajama pants. The reason is modesty. There are a few orthodox rabbis who do permit pants

The comments on this video (plus the thousands on other platforms) should be enough for Netflix to realize they made a HUGE mistake running this show. Netflix, please - you’re hurting your own reputation by giving families like this so much attention!
They are getting a second season and I am thrilled! (I am not Jewish, I love Julia as a person).
U ain’t modern orthodox maybe old school conservative and that’s being generous
Kosher phones in 2021 have picture text and usually it comes with internet and ever like a regular smartphone and people usually go to an organization that makes it kosher with their software
Me personally does. It believe in that but yeah
The funniest part about this show (I watched maybe 10 minutes of it) and I think the most revealing part is that all the people who are deeply engaged in their Jewish faith are happy and fulfilled while all the other family members toil in their “freedom”.
Not even Modern Orthodoxy allows her to dress so sultry as she does, she can call herself what she likes but not the custom of Tzniuit.
Did Miriam and Batsheva wear braces? Why are their teeth so perfect but the guys not so much? 😬🤭
If Miriam misses the feeling of why shes here and what shes doing in the world then maybe she should become religious again
Just because it’s comforting, doesn’t mean it’s true
You are making chlilul hashem
it’s so funny to me to see people that don’t know what these things are
Me too Im like wtf
This is one "reality" show I actually enjoyed and engaged with. Yes, there are obviously 'staged' moments as is the norm for these type of shows, but at the heart of it is a really interesting, fascinating look into one family's unique experience. Plus they all seem like really nice, kind people.
You make me laughing, you really believe them??? Is all fake, money
@@ho100cabl wdym Fake money? Her husband is a billionaire according to forbes and she makes a ceo salary untop of the money she acquired from her first business. Like take everything else away shes still married to a billionaire
Bat is annoying... She seems stuck up and in it for herself. She wanted "mommy time" at the chanel show but we all know why she was there... She tries to push "pants" but yet is always wearing designer clothes that don't fit the whole can't show this or that. She just seems very materialistic. Plus she is just a social media "influencer" here we go more 'I just have money and zero talent" brats.
Calling yourself modern orthodox when you walk around eating pig and meat and milk, and just straight up don’t keep shabbos, is just wrong. I have relatives who are modern orthodox, and they still keep Halachos. You are not orthodox. Also living in monsey and being Yeshivish is not ultra orthodox.
Not trying to be rude but Shlomo seems 🏳️🌈. I hope he'll feel comfortable to be himself one day.
@Cheeto Drip ikr so annoying.

Bad News! animators for Chainsaw Man are quitting due to overwork, poor working conditions and below minimum wage pay.(34$)
how come they arent talking about about netflix a multi billion company under cutting their animators?
Not to undercut the very serious issue of underpaying workers, but I don't know if Chainsaw man is officially a netflix produced show. They wouldn't be "netflix" animators because its MAPPA doing the animating, which has had issues for years now
Shame on all of u. To go off the path is one thing, but to disrespect and belittle the religion is another. Enjoy the fame cause the bill is coming
Not sure why there’s so many hate comments on here. I just finished binging the show. I had not known anything about the jewish community and this has opened my eyes a lot. I had only watched mrs maisel but im sure it’s not a realistic representation. However different, i can relate to this family and their experiences a lot. I didn’t grow up in a religious family nor a strict one. But my family was culturally traditional. Not until when i left my country to go study abroad did i finally found myself, make mistakes and be able to grow as an individual. I understand the importance of community but any overly religious people as well as their insistence on forcing others to believe in their religion is bad in my book. By standing your ground, no matter how uncomfortable, can you reach a level of self-actualization. I definitely cannot wait for season 2 already! Hopefully netflix will renew! I really love different perspectives from different family members. I like miriam the most since she’s very young, yet she’s bold, smart and go for anything she sets her mind to. She also seem to be extremely kind hearted and open minded. Julia is the ultimate ideal mom. She’s loving and caring to all her kids, she’s also open and easy fo talk to. I wished my mom had talked to me about orgasm and vibrator. I had to figure it out myself. Robert is so cute and such a drama queen! Love him whenever he comes in. I normally wouldn’t connect well with batsheva if i meet her in real life. But the things she said, ive thought about. She definitely has said a lot of difficult things no one wants to say. She’s truly a big sis. Other family members, i really like them. But i do feel the series revolve more around the women in the family. And i love that about the show. Again, cannot wait for more content! Thank you for sharing with us your family and your experiences.
It’s scary that you have learned a lot from this show lol. This is how media can exploit people like you so easily wtf
@@Zerin666 not sure you read my comments but i didn’t say anywhere that I learned a lot from this show. It is a reality tv show. Obviously it is also heavily edited and are not facts. I just relate my experience with what was shown on the show. Weird you even say that and not understand my comment or even read it.
@@FlowerPowerNZ you might be right that they are instantly famous. Whether or not it’s for 5 minutes I’m not so sure. Also, why do you belittle my experience of being surprised and actually invested in wanting to know more about the Jewish community? If you were in my shoes, not knowing another culture and then watch a show about it. I don’t know, like crazy rich asians or something. Wouldn’t you feel surprised and felt more invested too? No. Because you, like a lot of people here, choose to be negative even with strangers on the internet. I’m well aware a show isn’t a complete representation of the whole community. But this show was the door for me to be interested in learning more about the community. I too have watched other TH-cam video of people criticizing the show. Im not just assuming this is the whole picture or reality. I will do my research more and educate myself. But this type of negative energy from this comment section definitely doesn’t help.
This is not a good place to learn about Judaism. This show is everything Judaism is not. And that's shallow and materialistic. I grew up orthodox and went my own way. After I saw the first ep of this show I thought to myself 'id rather go back to being Orthodox than live even one day with these ppl." Orthodoxy communities are filled with meaning and purpose. It may not be for everyone. But in no way is it the toxic cult they are making it out to be.
@@X23-ak47 my impression after watching the show wasn't that Judaism was a toxic cult. In the show, Julia talked about how other women experienced it differently than her and she absolutely support that. it just didn't work for her. And she went on to have a very good relationship with her ex-husband as well as her sister who are both in the community. I could relate to her story because I had felt the same way in my community. other women were able to thrive in my community, just like other women in the Orthodox community. But I knew I would not be able to grow myself so I left. Obviously not every communities are perfect, it is only up to each person to experience differently. And of course, it is a reality tv show. It has its shallow parts. I don't view it as education. It's literally just entertainment. But just as much as if you watch a movie about other cultures, and it makes you interested in learning more through your own research later on. I have come to learn that not everyone has the same experience doing the same thing. it is a spectrum. It is best not to assume everybody is the same as you. and it is good to constantly ask questions so you can have a better understanding. cheers.
Eating a sandwich with chicken breast mozzarella and tomato on white bread means you are a Shiksa nothing with orthodoxy (or as you call it modern orthodoxy) and that's not considered keeping kosher to some extent.

Any person men or woman being suppressed and stripped of autonomy would leave given the choice. BTW, I find hilarious all the men in the comments saying what women should and shouldn’t wear 🤡
You know nothing about the Jewish Orthodox community and the fact you liked this show and likely take it as a source of education is worrying.
Nothing she says about Orthodox or ultra Orthodox is true so don't feel educated from this horrible show
Patriarchal views are not only embedded in the incorrect practice of different faiths worldwide (In Christianity women are synonymous with the Devil lel) but also in 'secular' institutions as well. Feminism itself was pushed by non-God fearing men lol because the only beneficiaries of women revealing all, being independent and career focused, being sexually 'free', opposed to the nuclear family set up and claiming men and women are the exact same are...Men lol (that is men who do not fear God). Sexual acts whenever they please, no familial responsibility, no monetary responsibility, no need for chivalry and women parts on display all day errday lolll.
