Al Balad in Jeddah is the oldest part of the city. Balad means "town" in the Arabic language. Located within the city walls (which no longer exist) is Masjid al Shaf'i or the Shaf'i Mosque. This is a MUST SEE! Parts of the masjid date back to the time of the Caliph Omar bin al Khataab. It is built in the Fatimid style. The Fatimids (970-1171 CE) ruled the region from Cairo.
