Nice vid. Building a gas herms now. I had not considered circulating water in the HLT. My assumption was that the difference in densities between hot and cold would naturally circulate the water. Thanks for the tip!

Appreciate the age of this video but helped me allot, in the process of sourcing a HERMS system and didnt think about the the heat build up around the coil, will make sure i have an additional whirlpool inlet on the HLT

Hi! Your video is great, thank you for your time. I have a question. I understand that this is the most common setup for advanced home brewing. But I have a question, why people use a boil kettle when they already have the hot liquor tank? I mean, you could drain and sparge the mash then drain the wort is a plastic bucket while, in the meantime, draining the hot liquor tank. Then put the wort in the empty hot liquor tank where it will be boiled with the electric element. You could also use the coil with cold water to cool it down after boiling. Am I not understanding something or is it just too much trouble to do so?

@mrmadam28 you need to transfer your wort from the mash tun, to the boil kettle. This gets the wort off the grain bed so that you can boil it. If you boil on the grain bed, you introduce more, and different, types of sugar that you don't necessarily want into the wort and also run an increased risk of burning the grain. Hope this helps.

You coulddo that, but the HERMS coil will be hard to clean after. Usually people clean the inside of the coil by recirculating the last of the sparge water through it while the wort is boiling. If you are looking at super simple ( and cleap) you could do BIAB (brew in a bag)

Hi guys! I'm building an Herms system but I'm missing something. Is it also required an heating element inside the mash tun or is the probe just for check the temperature in the mash? The HERMS looks grate for keep the temperature desired, but does it work well also for the multi step? How does it take to increase from 60 to 70 for instance? Thanks.

There is no heat element in the mash tun. The PID is just to monitor the temperature. His panel, like mine, can set an alarm if it gets too hot or too cold.

Very cool brewery. What did you use for the control box cabinet?

Do you have moisture problems without a vent hood? Or do you have someway of forcing the moisture out? Thanks!

what was the approx cost on this system?

the electric control component alone is $1,4095.00-$2900.00, the pots are $429 a piece. plus you have the tubing, pumps, heating elements, and temperature probes that you need.

+Jacob Pyle Probably $6K, though I didn't keep close track during the build.

Thank you, your video was a big help. Im currently in the process of building a herms system. i really like the way you have your kettles setup. Did you modify the kettles yourself or did you purchase your kettles complete.
