My first job as a school counselor was at a high school. I agree with everything you said. I was lucky to have a supportive admin who wanted us working on the social/emotional needs of our students, but administrative tasks like transcripts, graduation status, college recommendations, testing, financial aid, etc., took up soooooo much time. I was thrilled to move to a middle school (my favorite age, for sure), but I had a lot of people ask if I was demoted!? Lol
This video was super interesting! I’m very lost career wise (I’m currently 22 with no education as I dropped out of HS) but this career path resonates with me on a personal level. As a kid it was a lack of guidance/counseling that played a part in my disdain towards a good education. It would be awesome to have a chance at redemption and to help prevent other kids from falling into the same unnecessary/unfortunate path I took. Thanks for the content and insight into your career path!
Thank you for sharing your story. It’s never too late to follow your dreams if you’d like to be a counselor. You can do it! I’m sure there are others would could benefit from your experiences.
@@counselingwithmrb Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Do you think most school counselors would be open to someone interested in the field shadowing them for a day? I’ve thought about seeing if the counselor at my old elementary school would be willing to allow me to shadow them to truly see what it’s like.
I might be in the minority on School Counselors having to be in rotation teaching classes (3rd-5th grade) but I find that I can better connect with ALL of my students (learning their names, personalities, etc.) and build that rapport. I have the other half of my day to counsel individually or with groups. Love your channel bro! Keep up the great work! Most rewarding job ever making a difference in these kiddos' lives!
I’m so happy that being in the rotation works for you and your students. I honestly wouldn’t have minded so much but I taught 27 classes twice a month. It was too much 😂
This is a great video! My first year experience in middle school has not been welcoming. Unfortunately, people look down on me because I have elementary school background. Fortunately, I have done a great job at showing them that I know what I am doing. 😀
Thanks for this! Transitioning from teaching to a middle school counselor! First day of school is tomorrow, very excited !! Thanks for your video helped me calm my nerves of the unknown !
I appreciate ALL of your videos! I was an elementary teacher for 16 years and decided to become a school counselor. While my internship was at an elementary school and partially at a middle school, I spent my first full year as a middle school counselor. Hmmm, yes, I did a little bit of everything (mostly admin) and I did look forward to my weekly 5th grade friendship groups. I'm now moving to high school to also experience this level. I'm open to the experience and while it may be a lot of admin, I still feel as though I can build relationships with the students, let them know I care, and also work with the staff and parents. I'm military retired so I can definitely share my 20 year USAF experience and try to lower the anxiety of going into the military! Wish me luck!
Thank you for this! Right before the pandemic I worked at a Middle School as an aide and have to completely agree with everything you said. I am currently working on schooling to be a Counselor and I am definitely drawn to middle school for the reasons you mentioned.
@@counselingwithmrb I definitely will and I'm in Houston too so I subscribed and will continue following your journey through watching your videos. Thank you again!
I subscribe and watch your videos! Thank you for challenging me to post! Keep being an awesome inspiration! You are so creative and authentic. Iesha A Teacher and Counselor who Cares! 🤓💞
Your assessment of high school is correct. There is no time for guidance lessons or small groups unless you have a teacher(s) on board that are open to you coming in. There is definitely a lot of paperwork and administrative tasks. I have to be intentional about going out amongst the population. It doesn’t leave as much room for getting to know students on a deeper level.
I have always thought it would be easier working with elementary schools because they are still growing. Middle schools and high school kids are dealing with too many hormone issues for me. I am looking forward to working with younger kiddoes. I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.
Don’t get me wrong…I love the littles in elementary but I got tired of teaching sooo many classes 😂. For me, middle school is more balanced between counseling and administrative ☺️
thanks for sharing. I personally also don't think high school is for me. My goal is to do 1 of my clinicals in elementary and 1 in middle school. I have loved my experiences working with younger children, but I would love to see what middle school would be like too. I personally experienced a lot of my drama and family issues during that time which makes me have more understanding and empathy for them since middle school can be such a tough time.
Hi Regan! I love both elementary and middle. There’s pros and cons to both. And in the video I was being silly…I was referring to conflict in general when I mentioned drama. 😂 I know you’ll be able to use your experiences to help others!☺️
I’m an elementary school counselor. I am in charge of … RTI Section 504 Migrant students GT testing MTSS dyslexia packets SPED packets Benchmarks 3-5 grade STAAR Testing TIA for k-2 I help with lunch duty, afterschool duty and morning duty. I’m expected to do 3 counseling classes a day. I think my school district is the only one who has all the these programs for just the elementary school counselor. Most districts have the assistant principal be I In charge of at least 80% of these programs. It almost feels illegal to have the counselor in charge of all these programs on top of counseling. That is south south Texas for you. 🤷🏻♀️
Yes, as a Kinder and PreK only counselor, these cons are true! What is frustrating to me is the focus they have put on me in learning engament and classroom management (for my classroom lessons). Which I can not say is bad, but I feel very invalidated in the more important work I feel I need to focus on. Like creating groups!
You're definitely right about the girl drama, and bullying incidents. Middle School is such an entertaining job, but I really enjoy it. High School was almost like a business because I was doing like you said transcripts, scholarships, and so forth and so on. That's why I came back to Middle school.
I’m not knocking high school but like you mentioned, I figured it wasn’t for me. Felt like lots of secretary work 😅😭☺️😂 Glad you found your middle groove like me
Thank you so much for all of your videos! I am about to graduate with my bachelors degree and I recently decided school counseling might be for me. Your videos have helped me decide that this job would be so fulfilling and worth the hard work to get my Masters! Thank you again
Thank you for this. I am deciding between elementary and middle school. I had a really horrible middle school counselor when I was getting bullied and she never helped me with anything. I really wanna be the safe place for younger students that I never had growing up
Yes I do not know exactly all about it so I have been watching your videos to see all about it And I do you not know how when I am my age what to do to start getting into it kind of can you please tell me how to like get into it 😀

It’s definitely not a demotion lol. I love being able to interact with my kiddos 😊
demoted! haha nope maybe even promoted!!!
Great points...🎯. Totally agree about middle school, it's the sweet spot!
