To prevent warping, you should also prime the inside of the walls. I just use some grey spray paint.

I've built several of Doug Foscale's kits. Great stuff, but I always upgrade the bracing. I went to 1/4" or 3/8" square basswood. Yep, that's huge but the more floors and windows you have, the more the walls will warp, especially if you use alcohol & India ink stain. I spoke with him and he offered to send new walls. Very nice of him, but I was able to get everything straightened out. You're right about materials too. There's generally just enough to do what you need to do. Have spares on hand!

I like the idea of applying "lineup" marks to all the walls prior to final assembly. Don't know how many times I've glued the right side upside down onto another wall

Acetate from store product packaging will work as well.

An option for corner bracing. Make up some right triangles with the 90° corner notched out. Of course a full set of floors would do the trick too

One possible detail which I haven't seen.* Have one of the signs printed on really thin paper and cut it in strips. Then have a paper hanger putting the sign up. Preferably over an existing faded one
*just because I haven't seen it doesnt mean it hasn't been done

The windows that don't line up are probably stairwell windows so occur on landings halfway between floors.

Machinist blocks or 1-2-3 blocks. You can get them online.

When I look at the model at their site, the windows do line up. Something went wrong here.
I don't get that no one commented on you having glued the roof paper upside down. You faced the tar side downwards... and the white backside upwards complete with logo's. But we're all learning from videos like this.

Try these people. Their tooling and set-up tools for machine work as about as cheap price wise as I've seen. For holding stuff square and vertical another option might be 1/8th inch aluminum angle extrusion. Preferably in 2"

Can i know where this is being built? What building is it? The rooftop usually like not used? Like ideas of sitting place maybe for air, to look far distance maybe, fenced it if same row of standing level? Just ideas, it is because i feel like these will be in this country actually. Then if maybe telescope even, a shared(is it a home?) One - maybe multiple to take turns(like alot of place.

One question. Just what type of wood are the parts laser cut from. Bass wood sheet? Model aircraft plywood? Or some other type of engineered wood product? It seems to me that bass wood sheet stock would be extremely fragile when used for such parts as the window and door frames on the two street walls of this structure.
Also to hold corners square when gluing try some aluminum angle available from the big box home improvement stores. Use the 1/8 1 x1 or 2 x 2. I've done this in the past working on ship models made from card stock for the interior framing.

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I assume Basswood. Some companies do use some kind of engineered wood. It is fragile which is why you absolutely have to brace it before painting it. You can buy plain sheets of it with the siding scribed in. Micro Mark sells some interesting tools for aligning walls square as well. I have been pretty happy just using 1-2-3 blocks so far.

Thanks for answering the question. I picked up a cheap laser engraver cutter* last spring and I finally got around to figuring out the settings as to what intensity and feed rate in terms of mm/min. It actually cuts bass wood pretty nice. And that's what I knew the clapboard siding had to be made from. I did some test pieces out of 1mm chip board (the stuff on the back of writing tablets). The brick pattern engraved really well but it's a matter of playing with speed rates to get the depth needed for the mortar lines in the chip board. And yes it is very fragile on the edges. I did find a link to a company that offers 2mm MDF brick pattern sheets. But now I have to dig through my history to find it. I think I'll order some plain 2mm MDF and give it a try. The laser will cut up to 1/8th bass wood no problem. As far is chip board that's available from Amazon from .020" to .070".
*15 watt power supply, the laser's about 4.5 watts output.

      @@asdasx392
Did some more testing today. Plywood. Not so much. But tried some intersecting cement block wall pieces. So instead of butt joints it's more of a finger joint. I tried offsetting the laser path to try and accommodate for the burn width. That didnt work at all. So I just went with on the line cutting. When you intersect the two sections flat you can see light in the fingers but the joints go together with enough resistance that the joint does not readily fall apart. Should be a really good trick for joining flat wall sections end to end for longer walls. Ordered some MDF 2mm thick. Sheets come in 6 x 8 sheets well inside the 175 x 300 mm travel of the machine. To dial the machin in I'll just try cutting strips off 6mm wide. Machine imports all dimensions in metric only. Design in CAD using inches and scale by a factor of 25.4. Other wise a 3.5" wide part is only 3.5mm wide. Should build an enclosure for it so I can get away from wearing protective googles.

Just astupid comment: Don't make mistakes. Not that hard at all. What you are lacking is thorough planning. That is a red line among many of your enterprises: NO PLANNING. Before I get into it I make a mind planning and then a solid planning. In the end all matches up.
