  • Watch as I build the challenging Muldoon's Distillery kit from Master Creations. This is an early (1991) laser cut kit in HO scale.
    Added details include:
    Shingle roofing from rail-scale-models.com
    Corrugated metal from kcworkshop.com
    This video is not sponsored by anyone. I buy all of my own kits and supplies.

    Congratulations. You're among a select few that have ever finished a Master Creations kit successfully.

    I really liked the contrast of textures you did. It's just dilapidated enough! It will add interest to your layout.

    I have to say, the job you did salvaging that water wheel is beyond amazing. That thing was complete trash and you somehow brought it back. Great work. Seems like this kit was a total enigma to build. Such a shame the instructions were garbage. I would probably pass on this kit after watching you build it, but after watching you complete it and point out things to be careful of, has me rethinking it. Seeing the finished model now has me wanting it again. Fantastic work! Its not the mistakes we make, its how we recover from them and you worked miracles on this kit. Cheers, Rob

      Thanks for the comments. I consider this my most difficult build so far. It is just so tedious to try to find the pieces on the sprues. I did manage to get it on the layout and it looks pretty good. I actually just added the water last weekend. There is a woman singaporeminiature on IG who has a excellent build of this kit. I have not found any others. I say give it a try!

    Your patience, tenacity, perseverance and "stick-to-it-ness" are very inspirational. I am just getting started and noted your recommendation to start with the Bar Mills Shack Pack . As it works out I had already purchased those kits so I certainly seem to be on the right track (no pun intended). Thanks for your very informative videos.

    It looks like a Jack Works structure from the sixties. Lots of detail and complex arrangements of shapes and forms. Fun and challenging.

    Congrats on finishing . These are quite challenging. As to the ridge caps using a brown paper bag - just use the bottom of an envelope. It's already folded and when you cut it, it will match on each side. Just paint it to match. One caveat - it isn't all that common to have a tar paper ridge on a wood shingled roof.

    Your build and review videos are great. One reason is the skill displayed. A second is you pony up the money for the kits yourself. You're taking a risk in a way. If you screw up the kit (hey, we all make mistakes) you are the one that has to figure out a solution or take the loss.

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for all the comments. This was one kit that by reputation I thought may not be buildable (at least with my skills). But really, what is the risk when you consider all of the unfinished/not-started kits we all have laying around. I was pretty motivated to make this video and some of the others because I know few modelers will ever take on this kit, so I wanted to document what it was like and also to help anyone who might actually try it. That is one of my motivations for all the FSM kits, although I really like those and they are much easier. I would like to attempt another Master Creations kit at some point if I can find the right one at the right price.

      It amazes me to this day that there are still unwrapped Revell kits from the early 60s. If these are still around it is no surprise that their are Fine Scale Miniatures kits unbuilt held by collectors. I wonder how many have wound up in the trash. Either from botched builds or heirs going through someone's processions post death and deciding that trying to sell some items is simply too much trouble so in the dumpster it goes.

    Another great build. Thanks! I like the way you explain and show your steps. An expensive kit and it came out very well. Would love to see you do some scratch building.

    I saw this kit in a local hobby shop about 15 years ago. I believe the price tag on it then, on sale was $149 US. I wanted to buy it at the time, but just couldn't figure out how I would make it fit into my layout plan at that time, so I passed on it. Very interesting the electronics included. Today, it could be done much more easily. Still like the old Zilog devices though. ;)
    Would love to see your interpretation on your layout when you get to that point.

    Great build. I have fooled with the wood kits and they all seemed to be a little difficult. Since I run N scale that doesn't help. You have some excellent tips which should help me, as I have a lot of building kits that I am going to build. I think the building turned out great. Thanks for sharing. Dave

      Thanks for the comments. My first wood kit was a Bar Mills basics kit, but I don't see that in N scale. They do have the Shack Pack in N scale. I recommend that. Three different shacks, so you have three chances to get it right and it is pretty cheap.

    Very informative video. I have the kit and I am glad to see the problems with the kit. Made up my mind to leave in the box and sell later. Love your frankness and that you are not supported by any manufactures.

    Very tiny laser cut parts . I cover them with Cyano acrilate glue , the very thin one. Reinforce greatly vulnerable parts.

    Thanks for the build. You did an excellent job and I appreciate you showing the short comings of the kit. I had the opportunity to purchase this one combined with another at auction. Had I not seen your build I would have purchased it. I am not a beginner and have built Cambell kits ... no laser cutting there... but at least the material is there and the instructions are fairly clear. They too are not for beginners.
    Have you tried Laser Art kits? I have enjoyed them and the parts fit together with a little sanding.
    Thanks again, Joe

    Great video and build, thanks for creating! I started this kit years ago and it went in the box. Thru several moves, I lost the instructions. Any chance I could get a copy? Be glad to pay postage.

    Interesting kit and fun to watch. You have some creative ways to deal with the challenges. Glad you kept the water wheel. Can I ask what kind of sponge you use?

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments. They are natural sponges (at one time a living creature). I get them at Hobby Lobby in the art section with paints, brushes, etc. I assume any art supply store would have them. However, I think some people prefer grout sponges which are synthetic. So you might try different varieties.

      @@asdasx392 Thanks. I had tried some synthetic and found the results a little too even and regular. I'll pick up some natural ones to try.

    You guys spend all that $$ on weathering powders and I go to the dollar store and buy women's make-up and get the same colours you do and mine only cost $1.00. It also clings better than weathering powders.. Also I make my own rust (iron oxide) by soaking about 4 pieces of 0000 steel wool in a quart jar with white vinegar for a couple of weeks. Then I pour it out into a photo (stainless steel) processing pan (tray) and wait for a few weeks for it to dry. Then I use a single edge razor blade to pulverize it into a powder. Now I have real rust to use as you would apply powders, i.e., mix it with mineral spirits or alcohol and a drop of glycerin. Looks like real rust--'cause it's real rust! The old kits are not as well cut out as the laser cut kits are these days. You have to do alot of improvising to get it all to fit together. Also being so old the small thin pieces are very apt to breaking. You've done a wonderful job with what you had. 👍
    One question though is do you think it was worth the price for what you got and the end result?

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comments. Generally I would say it was worth it. It is such an intriguing kit and it is the only Master Creations kit I will build. I am generally pleased with the result regardless of some glaring flaws in my build. I did see one go unsold on Ebay recently for $180 so that is frustrating. I don't know how many are left out there. I try to imagine the reaction of modelers in 1991 - most with limited exposure to laser kits - paying what they did for this kit and then seeing what they had to deal with. There are so few build photos out there, I wonder how many actually finished it. I know Singapore Miniatures has build pictures on her Instagram.

    I admire your skills but I have to ask whether this kit justified the effort. Quite a puzzle to produce a structure that looks to be around a 6 out of 10. Better thought out modern manufacture could produce a better result. Still, full marks for your perseverance!

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments. I knew this kit was a beast going into it but I wanted to see what I could do with it. It was more about the journey than the destination but I do think the design has a lot of character. It is tedious and the instructions are poor but the pieces fit (mostly) so it is buildable. Regardless, I wanted to make the video since few people will ever have the opportunity to attempt this kit.

    Beutifil model , but way out of my league. I need models for beginners. Seemed for that price model should have better instructions and not present so many problems putting together. Thanks for the video

    I've watched several of your videos and you do nice work but you complain a lot about the kits. Very distracting and not enjoyable.

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comments. If a kit is missing pieces or the instructions are wrong, I am going to call it out. Most people appreciate the honesty, and find it particularly helpful if they are going to try to build the kit. I frequently choose particularly difficult kits. Master Creations has a particularly poor reputation for quality. I also do praise kits when they are done well. I also praise a lot of products. Many people think my assessments have more credibility because I am willing to call out poor products. I have a lot of respect for the level of work it takes to produce these kits (even the poor ones), often by one person, and I do try to make that clear as well.
