It's interesting to see what he chose to fine tune for his "Delirious" special and how he incorporates his routines with his crowd work. Eddie Murphy was a naturally gifted comedian. At that age, he had talent that was beyond his years.
This was actually done 2 months after the "Delirious" shows...those were taped on August 17/18 in DC at the end of his tour...he says at the beginning he "hadn't been onstage for 2 months"...plus the official date is right at the beginning of the video...that's why most of the jokes are familiar to everybody watching now...
@@hevyonez97 He goes in deep on a couple of points he just skirts on in Delerious... I'd love to see footage of any performance right between this and Raw :D
I really think Eddie Murphy's probably the biggest raw talent to ever do stand-up. To think he did Delirious when he was, what, 22? Who gets that good ever, never mind at 22? If he had carried on with it I really think he'd be widely regarded as the best
he's already regarded as one of the best stand up comics of all-time, with only two specials and a short tenure on SNL (which he ended up saving the show)
Thank you SO much for sharing this! Once upon a time in the mid 80's when i was 8 years old i stayed at my cousins place, they were 15 years older than me so my bed time came far earlier than i wanted. - I had trouble sleeping in a foreign environment and an hour later i still couldn't sleep, doubled with the fact that they had started laughing and i was curious about what happened after i go to bed. I crept into the lounge behind them and saw them watching a man in a red leather suit who was swearing in a spectacular fashion, stringing naughty words together as if it was a form of high art, saying things i'd never heard that made my body contort as i desperately tried to contain the hilarity. I lasted less than 47 seconds. I was a big fan of the A-team, i heard the Mr T impression.... and my hiding place behind the couch was instantly revealed as i erupted into a spasmodic flailing fit, unable to breathe with tears streaming down my face, clutching the side of the couch as my knees buckled i had something close to a prepubescent laughing orgasm. 'Delirious' became something of my comedy bible in my world, followed closely by 'Raw' So to suddenly see this video is monumental!! I want Eddie to return to Stand Up more than i want world peace. I love that 90% of this is exactly the same as 'Delirious,' beat for beat. I first saw Delirious a teen sometime in the 90s and was obsessed, and could probably recite the entire thing off the top of my head to this day.. Seeing this now absolutely blows my mind. Thank you for posting.
The James Brown segment is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. I studied this segment at university, even. I played it out to a class of kids who'd never grown up with Eddie Murphy (Gen X), and were on the floors rolling.
+Aaron White Closest competition would be Dave Chappelle. Other than them, normal comics don't get good until their thirties, or even forties.. Eddie and Dave both started as young teens in high school!
+ZipptyBOP Chappelle didn't get that good until his late 20s. Eddie was already really great when he was in his early 20s, Chappelle was good by that age but he didn't have it all worked out like Eddie did yet (although I do think Chappelle is overall the slightly better comedian)

Wow, what a gem! Delirious before Delirious.
Long live Eddie Murphy!!!!!! Funniest stand up of all time.
One of the best sets I’ve ever seen
This is so freaking rare! Eddie Murphy is the King 👑 of Comedy. 🎭
Mic dropping in 1983. Eddie Murphy is the best comic of all time. Carlin is close but Ed is the G.O.A.T.
This guy is genius. Spot on impressions.
Again this is my reference for perfection of the art form

Excellent point!
And he became a snl cast member by the age of 19 years old
Funny thing is he didn't do for long but is still regarded as the best
The fact that he dropped it so quickly kinda makes him MORE legendary if you think about it.

Maybe 🤔
I see what ya did there.
No, this guy will STOP being comedian one day😎
I think you’re onto something. He might mess around and be the biggest movie star in the world or something like that.
The journey that was ahead of Eddie after this classic pre Delirious performance was amazing!!!

That's just what I said.
Yup. Comedians gotta Practice their material before the specials happen
You can clearly hear how he perfected it. I know the people who were there remember that night.
