When I want to build a new commander the first place I go is my collection. Then I evaluate what I already have, and buy a few things to round it out. I generally upgrade my decks over time to be more focused, but I like that they're all born of budget jank.

I did something similar for most of my YuGiOh decks, buying random cards to get back into it, and then I saw one that stood out:
      "Subterror Behemoth Voltelluric"
I instantly thought that there's no way flip effects are viable in the modern game, and his effect seemed so situational as well.
Now I've got his full archtype deck and it's a lot of fun, everythings I hoped for.

This is the most enjoyable part of deckbuilding. As I was upgrading my decks I ended up building "little brother" decks (due to the handovers), and with the cards that didn't make that cut either I just made a mono-colored commander cube

Dude, it's amazing to hear someone bring up Shifting Grift -- I've got a Shifting Grift DECK. It's my favorite deck I ever built. It's Ruhan as the commander (who has shocking synergy with these trade-style cards) and the thesis of the deck is "why remove when you can steal/make it someone else's problem?" So much of EDH nowadays is built around bespoke synergy engines where the cards aren't actually good outside the context of that specific archetype or tribe, so having two players trade important synergy pieces is basically a two-for-one removal. For generically powerful cards like a Bolas's Citadel or something, the deck plays a variety of permanent types to trade, counter, or steal anything that could prove problematic in the long run. You and I are clearly kindred spirits :)

It's honestly refreshing to hear an EDH youtuber NOT vouch for playing synergy and efficiency. Filler and pet cards make the format feel so much more artful and unique compared to standard/pioneer/modern.

Shifting Grift kicks ass! Love taking a sol ring and a protection enchantment in one swoop.
Fleeting Reflection, from the same set, has become one of my top protection spells. 1U to Hexproof your creature and turn it into any other creature on the board until end of turn. Makes for some really cool unexpected plays

This video's great! I think the biggest shame is how difficult it is to find these cards, at least in my experience.
I usually brew bottom up, in that I very slowly choose a category -> look for ~8 of those cards -> move to another category. Usually I'm going through "removal that compliments this deck's play patern" "draw that compliments what my deck wants to do" "direct synergy piles" and then I always have a "goodstuff" section, which isn't actually goodstuff because all that stuff is usually outside my deckbuilding budgets. It's a very gobbled up and undefined category that adds a stretch of diversity for the deck. I think the subject of this video actually is that category for the most part. Generic stuff that expand my options and available toolbox. They fill out my deck's last slots that I struggle to fill because 90 cards is often a bottleneck that stagnates my progress.
I'm currently brewing simic flash tribal and a card like Mystic Reflection blows me away at how applicable and diversely it fits into my plan, but it required me to sit and think about what a real game with this card in my hand would look like. A solid 10-minute activity. I have various 1-2 drops that can be cast at any time so I have the option to on an end step select a powerful drop and flash in a silly Spectral Sailor or my many other 1-2 drops that aren't exactly threatening but progress my board presence at a cheap and consistently spared cost. Or yeah, it's a counterspell of sorts in the vein of Strix Serenade. Its diversity is stellar and I really appreciate cards like that when I struggle to fill out this category that often times becomes the same 8ish cards per colour id.

I’ll absolutely be following! Love your approach to commander. I have a deck I consider “meta” (isshin, with a focus on going wide with tokens) and then I have a janky fun simic deck full of funny lands combos and a silly rat deck I’m working on now. The idea of “it’s not a commander deck without sol ring/best in color spells” is so boring and leads to games that are uninspired.

Volrath's Shapeshifter. It's always funny. I know, ordering graveyards is a pain, but way less so when you really only care about the top card. And the kind of nonsense that strange card has enabled is top tier.

Recently, I've been building a lot of decks entirely out of my bulk. This is for three reasons; The first being cost obviously, the second being that if I don't like it I can just... take it apart, and the third being that it lets me experience a lot of cards that otherwise would never see play. A favorite of mine lately has been rivers rebuke, for example. In my pod, we're casual enough that, in my experience, deck CONSTRUCTION matters more than individual card quality. Because my decks are well built, they still perform.
As a recent example, I was sitting there looking at the storm secret lair I had purchased. I had a brew in mind, but I wasn't happy with it. First of all, it would cost me 350 dollars in additional cards to finish. Second of all, it was incredibly repetitive to play in testing. Third of all, it had a play-pattern that was unfun for the table (namely, long storm-off turns with extra combats). Boring. So I Decided to take it in a different direction; I built it entirely out of bulk, and I built it with the mindset of "What if the izzet player was playing mono green". The result is, in my opinion, a MUCH more fun deck, and it still kicks ass! I call it Landstorm: archidekt.com/decks/10828874/landstorm_bulk_built The premise is simple, casts cantrips, cast a land ramp spell, go wild. Sure, I have your cultivates, your kodamas reaches, ect. But I also have.... Open the Way, They went This way, Path of the Animist, Search for Tomorrow, and Dance of the Tumbleweeds. All cards I'd never even considered before. And the best part? The deck was free (aside from the SLD I bought at the start ofc). Building from bulk is a lot of fun, even when your bulk is small like mine.

@@CardBoardJunkiesYT By all means if you want to! I was just giving it as an example, not lookin for anything specific haha! Looking fowards to more vids, its always nice to see people remind the community that there is more to EDH than just the top 99 on edhrec. The more I brew from bulk (I've done like... 5 decks in the last few weeks), the more I become convinced that overall deck quality completely trounces card quality in casualEDH, and that people need to pay more attention to their gameplan and ratios.
and FYI, if you do look at the list, I'll just cut off the obvious question of "Why so many rocks in a land-ramp deck" with: The intended play pattern is t2: 2drop rock, t3: storm, t4: cantrip -> ramp spell.

[[Yusri, fortune's flame]] is a card I add in to every single izzet deck I make, and more often than not it's just really high health cost, inconsistent draw. But every time I actually get the 1/32 chance of basically getting a turn of omniscience, I'm reminded why I added it in the first place.

When I built my first Commander deck in 2013, it was a RG goblin deck with Wort the Raidmother as the commander. It included Krenko, and people would ask me repeatedly why *he* wasn't the commander, and my answer was always "every other goblin deck here is a Krenko deck, and that's boring!" That deck was not very good (even if I got a good board state, when combat rolled around there was far too much counting of +1s), but I still play it occasionally out of nostalgia and sometimes improve it if I find a good new goblin card.

I lament that the game has gone so much more towards just taking decks off the internet. The point of having a game like this to me is showing off skill through multiple levels in how you build your deck and how you play the game moment to moment. Just building "the meta" takes away half of the skill and creativity expression to me, and it's a huge part of why I largely fell off on playing.

Oh Agitator ant, I hoped you'd do good. I wanted to goad things, including my own with something that had a body, especially for when Assault Gear came around. But too easy for an opponent to stockpile counters on something that didn't need to attack and then have something problematically buff later. Probably going to the goading Blade next time I edit that deck.
Likewise I'd say Shifting Grift has a commitment factor. Even if my main goal is open ended, I'm not running it without having stray artifacts, creatures, and enchantments so I can shift to maximize my benefit. Having random artifact creature tokens is trivial. But I do have to make sure I have some Omen of the Sea, Grasp of Fate, etc, so some of the time I'm swapping for my opponent's scary Mind's Dilation or Primordial Bounty.

I have a rigidly colorless Legacy deck for reasons of flavor as much as anything.
There's no (one) eldrazi (titan) in it.
I named it 'Karn's Legacy', and it's focused on using old mirodin artifact stuff for the most part, along with some Urza stuff, including THOSE lands and several very memorable darksteels.
It's grindy and can produce asinine amounts of mana, and can, if not crushed reasonably quickly, become very nasty to fight.
Now, as a 'how is this game still going' button, I ran something pretty janky. Ring of Ma'ruf. In conjunction with decent draw and a couple other cards, I condensed several options for emergencies and late-game win cons into a single card slot with that ring. It's a shame I can't use any colored mana in the deck, otherwise I'd just run 4x Mastermind's Acquisition and make it wildly more consistent while performing RoM'R's job for less than half the mana cost (10 vs 2BB).
Other highlights include Planar Portal, Pariah Shield + Darksteel Myr, and Energy Chamber + Lux Cannon
I try to keep the mythics to a minimum and in general at least pretend to have restraint on the deck's design beyond simply adhering to the style criteria, so I COULD make it much nastier by including things like Sol Ring and Palladium Myr to ramp out faster. Running those I frequently hit a 5 mana base turn 1. It was not okay.

EDHREC is the bane of Commander, sure it is cool to find synergies but the problems that it caused outweigh the benefits. First is the problem of how the site functions ans how it perpetuates copy pasting lists that then feed into its algorithm again.
Second problem is the over optimization of decks, meaning unique cards get labeled jank unless they are paired with the commander. Simply good utility cards get no play at all, and peoples collection outgrows the number of cards they have in decks. And then you buy more singles, and more, and more... yeah EDHREC is pumping a lot of money into the game but now I feel we need a new casual format to replace EDH. And WotC knows how eager players are to replace their cards with slightly more optimized versions so thats why all sets feel like commander sets and we get constant powercreep.

Tempt is weird because in a competitive setting, people will know that the OBJECTIVE correct decision is to say no. That way, you're making them dump a ton of mana into a bad tutor. In a casual setting however, every time I see it cast they get between 2 and 5 lands

Personally I don't see (most of) these examples as "filler"; what they ACTUALLY are, are either generic value that don't need to synergize with anything and thus are more consistent than synergy-pieces that are dead when you opponents are willing to interact; that, or they are interaction with opponents.

They are good cards in my opinion, i wouldnt tell you to play bad cards, but there is usually a better, more streamlined, alternative to the stuff that I showed that has a more direct purpose in whatever youre playing. these are just generically cool cards you could throw in almost any deck of their colors and even if they aren't "correct" in your circumstance, there's nothing wrong with running them

My favorite commander deck is “vegan prossh”. Basically a food chain less version. The main combo is prossh, cryptolith rite, ogre battle driver, and ashnods altar. With all them you can cast infinite prosshes to make infinite 2/1s with haste. Beastmaster ascension is also a sleeper pick since if you can cast prossh a few times to get extra tokens 15 5/6s usually kill the board late game
