  • The Band of the Scots Guards and the Band of the Grenadier Guards providing musical support for Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace on 20 December 2023.
00:00 The Band of the Scots Guards, having left Wellington Barracks, marching up Spur Road on their way to St James Palace.
00:54 The Band of the Scots Guards, having left Friary Court at St James Palace, marching down Marlborough Road towards The Mall, playing "To Your Guard" (W.T.Hughes), leading a detachment of the Old Guard.
02:00 The Band of the Scots Guards, marching along The Mall approaching Buckingham Palace, playing "Pentland Hills" (James Howe), leading a detachment of the Old Guard.
04:01 The Band of the Grenadier Guards, having left Wellington Barracks, marching up Spur Road and approaching Buckingham Palace, playing "My Regiment" (H.L.Blankenburg), leading the New Guard. Unfortunately there's a lot of wind noise here, but at least the rain held off.
05:58 The Band of the Grenadier Guards leaving Buckingham Palace playing the slow march "Men of Harlech" and then "Wassail" (also known as "Yuletide March") by Rodney Bashford, as they lead the Old Guard towards Wellington Barracks.
08:27 The Band of the Scots Guards, having left Buckingham Palace, marching along The Mall playing "Machine Gun Guards" (Eric Marechal) and then "Wassail" (also known as "Yuletide March") by Rodney Bashford, as they lead a detachment of the New Guard towards St James Palace.
12:21 The Band of the Scots Guards marching back along Spur Road and into Wellington Barracks.

I'm putting my comment here on my own video (!) in the hope that someone who knows the answer sees it and can help a viewer with a situation that others must have found themselves in. The question is, if one's father has served in the Guards, but is now sadly deceased, is there any way in which one can approach the Regiment, or anywhere else in the wider Army, to provide any photographs of him in his full uniform, and/or with his fellow Guardsmen, during his Service life? If you are able to help or offer constructive advice, can you please look at the comments from user-vq3oc9wp6k below. To see the comments thread in full, I find it best to use the "Sort by" button above and select "Newest first".
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

My Brother was a Grenadier pensioner and the Army pension Board paid for most of his funer in Harrow and can refer calls for photographs etc to their records office. I got one of my brother when he was at Oswestry..if you have his official number i.e. I.D. no. It is much easier..they were helpful to me. Try that..

Hello Michael! That bit of Jingle Bells, is actually the end part of the March Wassail, which is also known as The Yuletide March. It's an absolute Corker & is Basically several Christmas Carols, linked together with an exceptional Original Melody. The first Carol right at the Beginning is The 12 days of Christmas, there are other recognisable Carols throughout & it finishes with Jingle Bells. The word "Wassail" is a Traditional Drink made for the 12th Night Festivities, either a Tankard of Spiced Beer or Mulled Wine. To go "Wassailing" is to go Carol Singing around Towns & Villages. The idea of Wassail as a drink, was to warm the Singers up for when they went Wassailing. It is a rather Special March & is only played during the 12 Days of Christmas by the Household Division, both Infantry & Cavalry.

The next time the Coldstream Band is shown as being there is 3 January. I would post a link, but posting links might not be allowed here. Also, schedules can be changed at short notice.

There's two ways that you might be able to find Pictures and General Information about your Late Father's service in the Guards, The First one is the National Archives who might be of some help to you. The second way is The Army Personnel Centre, The Army Personnel Centre Helpdesk provides assistance to Army units, outside agencies and the general public who are inquiring about the disclosure of information held on officers and soldiers. I added their Contact Information but sadly had to remove it as my Comment was taken down 3 times!!! My apologies! I do hope this helps you in some way! Hello Mike!! Great Video & a Great Description too! I saw & heard the Bass Trombones at about 2:38, the Scots Guards playing I think it's Pentland Hills. You certainly know they're there! Superb!! DM Sam Potts Energetic Marching Style with his Staff certainly fits in with that particular part of the March. I almost thought they were in Ranks of 6, they were so strong & Loud. Great sound quality Mike! You've made me very happy, The Grenadier Guards Band led by my favourite DM, SDM Gareth Chambers MVO heading to BP sounding Great. The Piece de Resistance though, is them leaving BP with the Old Guard who must be The Welsh Guards, Slow March is Men of Harlech. I'm not sure if the SM yelled Quick March & the Band didn't hear & he had to Repeat it, or I heard the last part of Break into Quick March & then the Quick March, but they sounded very quickly after each other. Then Wassail, Brilliant March, all the Guards Bands have got a lot of Mileage out of that this Christmas. Excellent Camera position Mike, a great view of them exiting BP! It's very interesting, both of the Bands play Wassail, but the difference with the Scots Band having 2 Bass Trombones & a slightly different Composition of the Band, I think there's 2 x Eb Tubas, but overall the Bass Section Sounds much Stronger than the Grenadiers, and you definitely know there's a Bass Section in the Grenadiers, especially when they Swing out of the Spur Road. I'm really going to have to pay more attention to Band Composition I think. I know the strength of the Bass Instruments Players do make a difference, but there's something more.
Thank you for the Great Video Mike, it's excellent, especially with Transport being awkward, at least it didn't become a Wet Mount.

Hi Vicky, thanks very much for the comment and the analysis. Thanks also for your reply to michaeldowd8422below - I know very little about identifying the various Drum Majors (although of course I can identify SDM Gareth Chambers very easily with his particular style, appearance, voice and accent!), and that comment will be a great "Go-To" reference with all the info together in one place.
I was very lucky with the transport, weather, what was played and by whom, and positioning. I see what you mean about the "energetic" style of DM Sam Potts. His action with the Staff (which up to now I've probably wrongly called the "Mace") is like a much more energetic version of how they do it in Austria and Germany. My sister, who as you've probably seen before is English but lives in Germany, sometimes sends me links to marching bands there - it seems to be very much a "community" thing there which we don't have very much in England. She sent me this one because she thought I'd be interested and find it amusing. Throughout, you can see what I mean about how they handle the Staff, but on the subject of instruments the short bit from 01 min 05 secs to 01 min 45 secs is of particular interest. They have a lot more of their equivalent of the Euphonium: in the case of this particular band at least 4. But as soon as the 4 "euphoniums" start playing the loud bit, you'll very distinctively hear your favourite instrument approaching although it's right near the back. Not the youngest player in the world, but great on him playing so distinctively!
      th-cam.com/video/5GAhlx30gXM/w-d-xo.html
You're right about the Trombone makeup in the Scots Guards and Grenadier Guards bands in my video, but of course it can vary from day to day. How far away from the band it's being filmed from obviously makes a difference (eg if using a lot of zoom), the direction from which it is filmed makes a difference, the amount of wind noise makes a difference, the amount of crowd noise makes a difference, and there are other factors as well.
Finally, did you see this video (by "Military Events") of the Band of the Household Cavalry playing inside Windsor Castle? I thought it was very reflective and moving, and watched it several times on Christmas Day:-

@@MikeM14-40 Hi Mike! Thanks for these Links. I had a quick look at your Sisters one, I'll go back & have a Good look in a day or two & I have the Military Events one on my list to look at. I'm sort of in & out of TH-cam at the moment, Christmas Eve I was busy prepping everything for Christmas Dinner, obviously Christmas Day I was busy cooking the Dinner. MOTH is a Brummie, I'm not sure if I told you that, he came home to NZ with me in 2000, leaving all his Family behind. The 1st Month of Summer here is December, so Christmas Day is anything between 20degC & 32degC, in the evenings it never drops below 18degC. I decided to do a Full Traditional English Christmas Dinner, to help make his first Christmas here a bit less sad without his Parents & Sisters. I did the Turkey Dinner with all the Trimmings & a Plum Pudding as well as some normal NZ Christmas things. That has since become our Traditional Christmas now. Every Year I say that's it, the last time & every Christmas I do it again. Then our house is like Kings Cross Station in the Rush hour, with family & friends dropping in until about the 30th, so life is busy cooking, feeding everyone & having Drinkies, so it's a few Days before I get to relax & enjoy Christmas.
I also used to call the DMs Staff a Mace, it took Delvin-Pedia about 6 weeks to get me to call them a Staff. The General Consensus in the British Armed Forces, is that the various Drum Majors use Staffs. They are quite an Ornate, Valuable (in terms of £ Value) & Important Regimental Meaning. You probably already know this, but each Regiment's Staff is engraved with the Regimental Badge on the Top of the Silver Knob & engraved all down the Staff itself are the Regiments Battle Honours. The Staffs hold almost as much Reverence to the Regiments Colour, in some Respects. As I understand it, in the UK Military Bands, the DMs carry Staffs, in the UK non Military Brass Bands, the Civilian DM call there's Maces, in accordance with many other Countries, The USA in Particular with their College & University Bands. I'm glad I could help with the DMs List, those are pretty much the Core DMs, but many DMs come & go, there was DMs Dan Fairley & Chris Rees at the 2023 Trooping the Colour, but they weren't there at The Orb & Sceptre Musical Spectacular & I think only Chris Rees has served as a DM once since. I believe they both went to Scotland as DMs. The DMs, was the first thing I learnt about & by Trooping the Colour I had them all identified, it does get tricky sometimes you don't see much of their faces under the Bearskins, but you don't have Plumes on their State Uniform Jockey Caps, all you have are faces. However, I've watched almost every Guard Change Video this year & I can identify them now by their Marching & Directional Signals. For example, DM Potts energetic March, Gareth Chambers flourishes & Elegant Style & Scott Fitzgerald is the only DM who Signals with an overhand then underhand Directional Signal.
One other thing I wanted to mention, I posted a Reply to your Comment about information for Deceased Past Members. I actually had the address to Contact & the Website for the Household Divn. Grenadier Guards. All the Military Records for Former Guardsmen go to the MOD Records Office in Scotland. That's for Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish & Welsh Guards. I've noticed that comment has been deleted by TH-cam, which Frequently happens when you post a Website address. But if the person concerned goes to the Household Divn. Website, all the info is there for Deceased, Former or Retired Guardsmen. The other place to try is The Regiments Association, all the Guards Regiments Association can be contacted as the (Regiment Name) Association, c/o Wellington Barracks, Birdcage Walk, London. I'm not sure of the Postcode. The Regimental Adjutant is in contact with all the Association People. I got the address from there for the Grenadier Guards Regiment Association for someone earlier this year. Did you know you are able to get replacement Medals for former Guardsmen? You need to have certain Documents & Information, but you can get some Medals Replaced. I got my Dad's Medals Replaced through the RAF & if they had Gongs for Victoria Cross, George Cross you can get those from MOD & Buckingham Palace too in some instances. Very Sadly some Veterans sold their Medals because they were not well looked after by The State, Heart Breaking! Anyway that's that. I'll be popping in & out & be back properly in the New Year, I'm just commenting on a few Special Notifications, like Mr B's & Yours.
I hope you enjoyed Christmas & are gearing up for New Years, Let's hope 2024 is a more Positive Year! Hugs Mike.

My word,@@vickyRoyalHistory , you've certainly been busy! Thanks for all the additional information. It's a real shame when posts get deleted when work has been put into them to try and help other people. I make it a policy with my own posts never to include links that go outside of TH-cam - it seems to have worked up to now. Maybe one day the algorithms will become sophisticated enough that they can differentiate between posts such as yours, which are well-intentioned with the aim of providing help to others, and those where the links are just malicious or blatant "advertising".
Compared to yours, my Christmas is very mundane but an opportunity to do various "housekeeping" tasks (including lots of "admin", sorting out old computer files, etc etc) without the pressures of the normal working weeks. We have at least another week of very rainy and windy weather ahead here (including at least one more "named storm") so there won't be very much getting out and about, or outdoor musical events. At least there are still lots more good videos coming out on TH-cam from the usual posters - I've commented jokingly on one from "Military Events" about a Christmas present for Delvin (another rendition of his favourite march, by the excellent RAF band)!
Take care, don't overdo things, and all the best into the New Year.

Hello Michael! The DM leading the Band of the Scots Guards is DM Sam Potts, 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, WO 2nd Class. At this present time there is no DMs from the Scots Guards on the Roster. Even when there is a DM from the Regiment, they don't always lead their own Regimental Band. There is a Roster of DMs & they are allocated a Parade, a notification of the Band doing the Parade is usually on the Roster. The Current DMs who are available are: Senior DM Gareth Chambers MVO 1st Batt Irish Guards, WO 2nd class (He has been the DM leading the Scots Guards most often) DM Stu Laing -1st Batt Welsh Guards, WO 2nd class, DM Scott Fitzgerald - Reservist, ex-Coldstream Guards, DM James Johnson -1st Batt Irish Guards, WO 2nd class, DM Sam Potts -1st Batt Welsh Guards, WO 2nd class, DM Beasley -1st Batt Grenadier Guards WO 2nd class.
The Grenadier Guards also have a Drum Sargent in training but I'm sorry I don't know his name. As well as the London Guard Changes, there is also a Guard Change at Windsor Castle, one of the Guardsmen Bands or the Band of the Household Cavalry leave Victoria Barracks leading a Detachment of Guards to Windsor Castle, as Musical Support, the Band of the HH Cavalry has their own Band Master to lead them, otherwise one of the Roster DM leads the Guardsmen Band. There are also the Drums & Fifes Regimental Bands seen occasionally as Musical Support, they will be led by a DM from the Roster & The Pipes & Drums of the Irish Guards sometimes provide Musical Support but they aren't led by a DM.
      Hopes this helps you.

Hello Mike, the Mounted Police ride in the centre of the Road for Security Reasons. The Logic behind it is, being Mounted, they can see over the heads of Spectators & hopefully see any threats to the Safety of the Band or Guard Detachment. They go down the middle of the Road, so they can see both sides, if they went on the side of the Road they couldn't see the other side clearly over the heads of the front row. The Guards can step around it if possible but it's one of those things where Ceremonial Duty is concerned. Since Bandsman Lee Rigby was so tragically Murdered, the Metro Police take Security Issues very seriously.
I have to say though, you'd have to be a real Fanatic or a complete Idiot, to take on 20+ Highly Trained Soldiers, carrying a Rifle with a razor sharp Bayonet attached to it.
