30 years ago, my son and I were walking in our woods and I cut out two young hardwood trees for walking sticks. I peeled the bark off mine and left it on my sons. Mine lasted about 12 years and I just called him in California and he still has his. It's as hard as steel now. He's been a Marine since 2009. Thought I'd add, we let them dry naturally and his never cracked a bit

I don't peel mine anymore, either. I do have a peeled Ginkgo biloba staff I "made" during a Field Biology class in HS that's lasted 25 years but I did use guitar strings to reinforce the bottom crack.

I've been doing this sort of thing for many years, here's one of my favorite tips for you, cut your saplings after the leaves fall off and cut them much longer than needed, keep them for at least a full year before you remove the bark, boiled linseed oil is my choice to seal the ends

I cut sticks year round, dry them with a heat gun or open flame, to straighten/ dry them. Apply clear coat. I make them for walking sticks and Escrima practice batons. Most of them last awhile and are hard and solid with good weight

Firstly if you leave it till winter you can bet your bottom dollar you won’t be able to find it again! And secondly there’s a very good chance some other sticky will have found it and had it away😂😂
