So I saw the video, saw the comments, and thought I may help someone if I write a summary from some of the suggestions in the comments. I started this, then realised this will vary greatly in options and prices depending on the area in the world, so general recommendations instead: Firstly, aiming at getting a decent laptop computing experience for students work, ignoring gaming. Limit budget to £400 max., second hand, there are plenty of choices from about 150 to 400. 8GB RAM minimum. SSD upgrade must be possible and can be later but necessary ASAP. You can put an original drive in a USB case for backup or storage so no waste. min 4 cores 1.3 or more GHz Then find something that works for you for size, screen size, weight, and ports. With screen size, don't forget resolution, brightness and contrast. Some screens are pretty poor. Most students are young and should be able to carry most laptops, so for most "light weight" and "compact" should not be the highest priorities. If you can't plug-in in most locations, battery life should be a major priority. The older the machine, the worse the battery normally gets. Used business machines can be great since they usually have good keyboards, screens, parts availability, and are quite rugged so can take a lot of moving about. If you have particular needs, such as recording, video processing, etc, then you may need to invest more. I'm writing this on a hp Elitebook 8440p with 4GB RAM and 118GB SSD, second hand business laptop. My second 4GB would not recognize due to a problem with the memory slot- a risk buying second hand. It is perfectly useable for home work, but the battery life is about 20 mins, so only used plugged in! Not quite matching the specs I recommend hence why I was watching this video in the first place! I've got my Dell Inspiron 7559 "from hands" for about 650$. It was packed with i7 6700HQ, GTX960M 4GB, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD. I upgraded it to 16GB RAM and 250GB M2 SSD. So now it is powerful and portable workstation. Oh, I'm studying Information Security, which means dealing with virtual machines, encryption, different vulenerability scanners and so on. In case you thought it was overpowered for student's needs...
I've been using the surface Go. I definitely recommend it if you have some maths,physic or chemistry classes because the note taking with the pen is amazing in One Note.

The T440 and T450 are starting to go for less than $200 and they’re not much thicker than modern ultrabooks. Even though I have no problem with the thicker and heavier T430, I guess some people are just too weak to carry something that weighs an extra pound.

I got an off-lease Thinkpad X240 for $200, Haswell i5 and the 70-something Wh battery make for excellent battery life and perfectly acceptable performance. The only upgrades it needed were the X250 touchpad and the FHD IPS panel, bringing the price to around $300. Awesome laptop for the money, would recommend if you're on a budget and need something compact with excellent keyboard and battery life.
For a small touch screen laptop with great battery life and decent performance, 800 is a good price. Unless you're planning on getting something that is cheap for the sake of being cheap, you're not going to get something good.

if you're going to program software at an advance level youll probably need to start at $1000. game development at $1600, of course if you are going to school for both those paths most colleges will probably have computers for students. if some college student on a budget needs to just take down notes, run office, and edit you can get away with most $300 laptops. anythign below that price range is specifically for basic notetalking or webbrowing in class.

Do yourself a favor and buy a refurbished laptop. I got one for ~$150 with 8 GB of RAM and an i5 that handles all the programming I throw at it (I'm a computer science major). It isn't pretty but if you care most about performance and cost it's great.
This is a really good suggestion if you need a laptop on the cheap and you don't want to waste your money. Old ThinkPads, HP probooks or Dells are going to perform really well despite their age and the only thing that might need a replacement will be the battery.
Yup. I bought a refurb Thinkpad T430 for my wife at ca.refurb.io . It came with an Ivy Bridge i5, 8GB RAM, SSD, and Win10 pro. All for less than $300 delivered. You can't buy anything new that is that good for even double the money.

You can probably use any low-budget laptop with a minimal linux installation with i3 or bspwm and it will work just fine and even be faster than a mid-range laptop

That being said, buying Apple electronics today is fucking retarded, stop paying for old hardware and shitty engineering.
So I saw the video, saw the comments, and thought I may help someone if I write a summary from some of the suggestions in the comments. I started this, then realised this will vary greatly in options and prices depending on the area in the world, so general recommendations instead:
Firstly, aiming at getting a decent laptop computing experience for students work, ignoring gaming.
Limit budget to £400 max., second hand, there are plenty of choices from about 150 to 400.
8GB RAM minimum.
SSD upgrade must be possible and can be later but necessary ASAP. You can put an original drive in a USB case for backup or storage so no waste.
min 4 cores
1.3 or more GHz
Then find something that works for you for size, screen size, weight, and ports. With screen size, don't forget resolution, brightness and contrast. Some screens are pretty poor.
Most students are young and should be able to carry most laptops, so for most "light weight" and "compact" should not be the highest priorities. If you can't plug-in in most locations, battery life should be a major priority. The older the machine, the worse the battery normally gets.
Used business machines can be great since they usually have good keyboards, screens, parts availability, and are quite rugged so can take a lot of moving about.
If you have particular needs, such as recording, video processing, etc, then you may need to invest more.
I'm writing this on a hp Elitebook 8440p with 4GB RAM and 118GB SSD, second hand business laptop. My second 4GB would not recognize due to a problem with the memory slot- a risk buying second hand. It is perfectly useable for home work, but the battery life is about 20 mins, so only used plugged in! Not quite matching the specs I recommend hence why I was watching this video in the first place! For work I have a Yoga 12 but I find the screen too small and hard to see - the touch screen tech seems to result in less clear screens. I don't think doing a degree on a 12" screen makes sense. You could plug a 12" laptop into a monitor in your room, but then that reduces the budget for the laptop! 14" or 15" minimum for working on. 17" if you want to use it to watch films with friends.

The T440 and T450 are starting to go for less than $200 and they’re not much thicker than modern ultrabooks. Even though I have no problem with the thicker and heavier T430, I guess some people are just too weak to carry something that weighs an extra pound.

I got an off-lease Thinkpad X240 for $200, Haswell i5 and the 70-something Wh battery make for excellent battery life and perfectly acceptable performance. The only upgrades it needed were the X250 touchpad and the FHD IPS panel, bringing the price to around $300. Awesome laptop for the money, would recommend if you're on a budget and need something compact with excellent keyboard and battery life.

Do yourself a favor and buy a refurbished laptop. I got one for ~$150 with 8 GB of RAM and an i5 that handles all the programming I throw at it (I'm a computer science major). It isn't pretty but if you care most about performance and cost it's great.
This is a really good suggestion if you need a laptop on the cheap and you don't want to waste your money. Old ThinkPads, HP probooks or Dells are going to perform really well despite their age and the only thing that might need a replacement will be the battery.

Just bought my father an HP Envy x360 with the AMD 2300U (so the slowest) for $540 and I'm surprised how the lowest chip also was light gaming capable! Cheap, touchscreen, stylus, M.2, ultrabook, 360degree hinge, good looking, good battery life. So I'm sure there are even better versions/models to recommend!

I have the Ryzen 5 - 13inch version of that laptop. With discounts it was $600. That’s way more budget than the $1000 gram for sure.

You can probably use any low-budget laptop with a minimal linux installation with i3 or bspwm and it will work just fine and even be faster than a mid-range laptop
