I was doing the Sturmtiger + drone strat with a friend, and at the time was new to the BR so didn't recognize the Object 279. It was the cleanest direct hit with thr sturmtiger we had managed to score yet, but all it did was blow off the tracks lmao.

The US even trained for this by operating infantry and vehicles whilst conducting nuclear bomb tests.... That is as stupid as you think it is. The 279 was designed to fight in these environments by having a more sterile/sealed design allowing them to be buttoned up to avoid the worst of the radiation. I'm not sure if this next bit is true but I've heard that it was designed to be able to be operational after a nuclear strike. Not a direct hit ofc and the crew likely wouldnt have survived but the tank could have been made operational fairly easily.

Yeah it's quite literally immune to all HE. No matter the size of the bomb, and no matter where you hit it, it does nothing. Me and my friend did extensive testing and I dropped a 2000 lb LGB directly onto the top of the turret, top of the hull, under the hull... nothing. Mavericks work because they're HEAT
What's funny is that, while the hull design is made so that the tank isn't flipped like a flapjack if it was in the blast zone of a nuclear bomb, it was only so the tank can be recovered and used even in the wake of a blast. Having this thing survive the blast _and continue fighting_ was never a concern by the engineers or military bureaus that designed it. So yes, the tank itself could survive a close miss, but the crew would have their insides turned to soup by the shockwave, or in the case of a nuclear bomb, be cooked alive by the radiation.
Crew should actually be fine as the thickness of the armor will stop any radiation and the design allows the shockwave to roll over the tank rather then slam into it.

Also, while the hull design can mitigate shockwaves, it can only do so much, essentially making the kill radius slightly smaller.

Also you are forgetting that gamma radiation doesn't travel very far through the atmosphere and when combined with the inverse square law of distance to dosage you will be safe from the radiation in such a tank. The radioactive dust doesn't emit enough to be a problem for a armored vehicle due to not emitting enough to penetrate solid material effectively as the danger from radioactive dust is direct unprotected exposure not exposure through what is effectively a steel wall. The design does more then make the kill radius slightly smaller it makes it significantly smaller due to how shockwaves actually work and how they transfer from one material to another.

Well it wasn't designed to take a direct hit from a nuke or any high explosive it was designed to withstand the shock wave and extreme force of a nuke , anything within the ground zero of a nuclear bomb would most definitely be atomized seeing as most nukes can leave a very very large crater in the earth

It had good stand-off explosive potential, but was lightly armored for a heavy tank. I do have to say that its spaced armor was a good idea for the time, considering that HESH was still dominant. If anything, the engineers hoped that it could survive the shockwave of a nuclear blast at the very edge of it, due to the extra tracks, but this was never tested. It did however have anti-radiation lining and such. So, in conclusion, the armor was arranged this way to give it the best possible protection ever, the nuclear part of it was just propaganda. If anything it would've been shockwave-proof, not blast proof.

The soviets have brought our their new super tank. The object 279 (she has got some other random tanks as well) to stop the advance of these countries. They cause trouble walking through the ranks of the ground forces and even the helicopters cant kill it. So they call the fleet. The carrier (lets say forrestal) launch aircraft (ranks 3 to 5) to assist. Can they stop these monsters before they take too many losses? Could be fun.

It's not designed to withstand a nuclear blast. It's designed to withstand a nuclear shockwave. And to be able to move over extreme terrain (like post-nuclear city rubble, vegetation or craters).
All the times he flipped reminds me of the time when I was chilling in my M4 and then a bomb blew up next to me killing a teammate and flipping over next to a building. I asked teammates near me to help me in chat but they ignored me. Then an enemy tank came right behind me a killed me. :/

4:50 I genuinely doubt this kind of damage would be sufficient to disable the main gun. I could definitely see reduced accuracy, but a majority of the barrel is still intact.
Funny of what the Russians thought when making this tank. I get nothing in the world can save you if a nuke fell on top of you but for the earlier bombs the shrapnel wouldn't be what kills you but the kinetic energy of the tank itself would turn the people inside into paste. The tank itself would be the weapon for the crew like if you shook something REALLY HARD and there was someone inside in a metal box yeah they'd be dead lol.

All the times he flipped reminds me of the time when I was chilling in my M4 and then a bomb blew up next to me killing a teammate and flipping over next to a building. I asked teammates near me to help me in chat but they ignored me. Then an enemy tank came right behind me a killed me. :/
I hate to be this guy but bombs are near enough useless against it the hull was designed to move the shockwaves around the tank smoothly so most bombs don’t effect it to much

Btw this thing would not survive the shockwave of a cold war nuclear bomb. Little Boy from WW2 was 15kt. Hull may but it'd be tossed like a tin can and the crew wouldn't survive that (even warships can't)

4:50 I genuinely doubt this kind of damage would be sufficient to disable the main gun. I could definitely see reduced accuracy, but a majority of the barrel is still intact.

Funny of what the Russians thought when making this tank. I get nothing in the world can save you if a nuke fell on top of you but for the earlier bombs the shrapnel wouldn't be what kills you but the kinetic energy of the tank itself would turn the people inside into paste. The tank itself would be the weapon for the crew like if you shook something REALLY HARD and there was someone inside in a metal box yeah they'd be dead lol.

FAB-5000 uses 3361kg of TGA-16 (5041kg TNT) while the 12000lb HC Blockbuster uses 3973kg of Torpex (6357kg TNT).
Thats a 1300kg of difference when it comes to TNT equivalent.
