I have a 1998 RAV4 in the same color. First car I've bought when I was 19, bought for 3k with 183k. I'm 32 years old now and still have the car with 304k miles. No Engine problems. Original Starter. Things have gone bad but it wasn't till the last few years. Alternator and Radio finally died 2 years ago and finally started to Radiator cracked. Replace all suspension, but they all were very inexpensive. No joke like 600 dollars for all the parts and did it all by myself with my jacks and hands. Even the Transmission died 4 years ago and blew at 260K but got a brand new one for 450. Small wear and tear as the years have gone by. The paint is finally starting to fade but I say for all the reliability its given me throughout the last 13 years, I'm extreme happy customer. Its a very simple car to fix. Even the gaskets are easy to fix! I'll be have it around for another 10 years for sure. You can't beat Toyotas First Gen Rav4!
I have Toyota Rav4 1998, i bought from my friend this in April right now am fixing a lot of parts in 2 days' time am going to fixed brand new Tyres from toyo open country Japanese Tyres, the engine is 3s what are you recommending about Toyota Rav 4 L? please let me know
I've owned 3 1997 rav4 's. 2 were totaled. Best car mechanically I've ever owned. My third which I own now was bought 5 years ago with 44,000 miles. It now has 74,000. Both previous cars had 150,000 before totalled. The Ford escape I had clogged up the catalytic converters and I purchased the rav I have today. It's a 3 door with a stick. Wouldnt hesitate to take it anywhere. At 74,000 miles and 24 years old with no rust spots and excellent paint its still a young Toyota!
I had a 1997 RAV4 in the same color. It was loaded with everything including a sunroof, LSD, A/C, and ABS. Along with the 4wd and ctr diff lock button with a 5 speed manual. Great car. Unfortunately rust destroyed the under carriage so it had to go. Still cruising just fine in my 2004 German Spec'd RAV4 4wd with 5sp, and everything else. The main difference between the German and US models from 2003 to 2006 they did not carry over the 2.4 for the '03 to 06 but updated the 2.0vvti motor. The best and coolest RAV4's were from the first 2 Generations in my opinion.
I’ve got a 2004 RAV4 and it’s amazing! I’ve also got a 2022 RAV4 on order. Originally bought the 2004 to drive while I waited for the new RAV to arrive but I love it so much that I’m keeping it. Doesn’t burn oil, 2.4L motor is much better than the 2.0L and the only mechanical issue is the 5th gear which vibrates. I’ll get that fixed shortly as it’s a known issue. Pretty good for an old car with 227k on the clock.
My fammily got the same, engine is very nice, doesn't burn oil like my newer avensis, have good power, we fit lpg system and you can't tell difference in power and consumpsion between gas and lpg, only it is half the price in my country. Handling is also very nice for suv. Only problem with rav4s is rust, all of them rust out with time.
Great to have good fortune of buying good car. One of mine great with flaws. The other was supposed to give first a break but it was a workout engine well disguised
Mk1 and mk2 are the best rav 4 models. Tough as old boots. 2000 to 2006 mk2 has more room and a goid 4wd system but just under an inch less clearance. Its for me the best compromise and built to last. You need to clean up rust undernearh then spray it with lanolin spray such as lanoguard
Hello, I'm highly interested in owning one of these cars. I live in Monrovia, Liberia 🇱🇷. I want to buy a very clean one and have it shipped. Please provide any pieces of advice or tips that would facilitate me to achieve this.
The drive train is very rusty. Maybe from salt. It needs to be put on a hoist and checked out and treated if necessary. Could be costly. OK for local driving but a cross country trip? no way in that shape. Generally Toyota's built in Japan are good vehicles.

Just recently got mine, '97 bought it with 125.000 KM, best choice ever made..
I've just bought a 2004 rav4 granite with 80,000 miles on it. Its like a new car to drive. Great motor.
Oil burner as it ages. Check the oil level often.
That 2.4 not so good.

If I had $20,000 for a car I would buy one of these and fix everything on it.

So in the 90s it was common for kids to hook up a CD player/Walkman to their cassette players in their cars.
Just bought one just like this one for 1500$ in California. Love it as a sail and I can keep my 3rd gen taco parked in my garage 🤓
totally agree! thanks for posting; you're so on-point about the longevity advantages vs. a new $30k car
I just bought the last year of the 1st Gen a 2000 and it's great bought it with only 160k and it's a great car
Great to have good fortune of buying good car. One of mine great with flaws. The other was supposed to give first a break but it was a workout engine well disguised
They're better because they don't have all of that electronic crap in them.
And no manual transmission like the one I have in my 2010 version, I prefer it over new 5th gen
I bought a Rav4 1999 in 2017 for 4,500 Eur, with 172.000 kms. Now Nov 2022, it is worth over 6,000 or 6,500. 231.000 kms.

Lucky! You have the adventure bags!!! So cool
Nice, I have an 03 Rav4 with a 5 speed stick. No timing belt like the 1st generation.
I'm going to have to get myself one of those. I like how they look.
1st gen’s definitely have a timing belt, sorry.
‘03 is the second generation
@Heywood Jablowme
He said the 1st gen has a belt, like you did, but you said he was a dummy and you are stupid, by choice.
they got rid of the belt on the 3S-FE? neat. My '87 camry wagon has the same engine, with a belt. Works great at 440k
My Toyota vitz 2002 model 300,000+ service it every 5months drives like it came out of showroom. I wonder if a 2020 vitz could last that long.

Beautiful &powerful car
Love it
If everyone would just rustproof their cars underbody it will last you a lifetime. Smh my 99 civic is 98 percent rust free.
How noisy is it when you go 70-80mph? Can it handle that speed? Does it seem to struggle?
Replace the control arms ASAP. Frame looks real clean though by Canadian standards. They all have surface rust everywhere here, not many left
Control arms just have surface rust. They'll clean up and can be treated with lanoguard and should be fine
Hey I am interested in buying your manual rav4. I was wondering where you are located? I was looking for something for college.
Sorry friend long gone. I wish i still had it, what a beast
The uk spec for this car says you can tow 1and a half tonnes and have with mine
My love car 98 no 21
How much it cost me if I want to buy it
Интересный обзор, мне понравилось) просто и с любовью)
