2 years ago I listened to a sniper in Ukraine who fought there since 2015, newsflash it aint started in 2022, he said that almost all of his shots was up to 400m
The military took snipers from every branch and ran them through an exercise and the majority of them either miss the Target or got other details wrong they then worked backwards to determine what range will every sniper in the military hit every time and that range was 200 m
Met Carlos Hathcock April 4th 1993..blew my mind that he was smoking a cigarette..just didn't think snipers would be smokers..he autographed one of his hats( which is in plexiglass on my mantle) and got my Pic with him..I've met some cool people but that was day was special..may he RIP..legend
I'm curious why you're surprised by that? Is it because of the level of discipline? If so I have to agree. If you're addicted to nicotine how in the world did Hathcock do that 3 day prone crawl through tall grass moving a few inches at a time. I'm addicted to nicotine and if I go one day without it I have intense brain fog.
@MickMackSauce And I am as well..use a vaporizer myself, first Pic I took of him he has a cigarette laughing,I would have a tough time without my nicotine but I guess when your "in your bubble"..its a moot point..
@@bushforme Yeah same, luckily I quit smoking but I still vape. Maybe he wasn't addicted and it was more of a pleasure thing here and there. Or maybe he was just one tough disciplined Marine.
Bro my brother watched people ruckmarch, do pushups, and do pullups al whilst clearing a 100 cig. He saw motherfuckers clear 6 min miles while smoking cigs. Ahahahah.
I knew an sniper instructor in the 90s at what now has been renamed Ft. Moore! We had a welding fabrication business. Sgt Knox commissioned us to fabricate a heavy duty horse/camping trailer for hunting in Idaho after he retired. Listened to his stories were interesting for sure. Thank You for your service!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
Love the content, I am shocked Shawn did not know who Carlos Hathcock was… His son Carlos Hathcock Jr also served. Carlos according to history took on a suicide mission over the better part of a week to take out an NVA General weeks shy of rotating home. Crawled back into an M113 that hit a mine to retrieve wounded Marines. Wish I had the opportunity to shake his hand.
I found this interesting too. Especially bc he knew green beret school off hand. I mean at first I thought it was him giving nicholas room to elaborate. Kinda like he does with detection qualifications. But then when he reacted with the “wow” it did seem like he was unfamiliar. I never served and only am interested in military history and even I knew of that famous NVA stalk. Would be fun to go on a rabbit hole of Carlos having never heard of him haha
Carlos also ised a Wimchester model 70 rifle in 30.06 . I read his book lomg ago. The Army snipers win the sniper compitition between the services though all the time. I have been a rifle varmint shooter for many years. I would have loved tp habe wemt to a sniper school. ❤ Very cool.. Very cool imterview. ❤
Super interesting hearing him talk about detection. I had a buddy say the exact opposite. But also makes sense given how prolific nicholas was in combat. My buddy couldn’t stalk for sht. And what always blew my mind is atleast in Afghanistan he talked about the median shot being a football field and he never took one more than 2 lengths. Idk why always stuck with me.
He's right. I was not a Sniper I was a Mortarman and Signaller after the Rifle Companies. We often did exercises like that. Much harder than one would think. And what makes the Infantry Scout so valuable. Much harder than Point Target Reconaissance or Stalking for sure.
I went thru Marine Corps Scout Sniper School in '77. I grew up hunting and scouting, everything from squirrels to rabbits, wild hogs (If you can hit the 2nd wild pig you shoot at after the first shot scatters the pack and hit it with a .30-30 iron sight lever action you can shoot and kill anything/anyone), whitetail deer and long distance mule deer shots. So I was already an expert shot when I got to boot camp (I qual'd high score i both my platoon and series). I had no issues with any of teh shooting portions of SS school. The hardest part of SS School was definitely the long heavy humps, I am a pretty small thin guy 5'9" 155 lbs so humping 80 lbs across 25 miles of the hill country at Pendelton was a bitch...I ended up getting a stress fracture in my left shin but just taped it up everyday and dealt with the pain...Semper Fi
Hathcock is famous due to the promotion which is great in its own right. But look up Chuck Mawhinney. He just passed in February. He's the Corps deadliest sniper to date and a true legend. Not many outside of the Corps even knew who he was. He kept quite for a long time for his reasons, but once he did talk; there's some good reading material on him.
Hathcock was the man. A bit of trivia. In 1942, the deadliest female Soviet sniper in history, Lyudmila Pavlichenko (309 confirmed kills), was visiting the US and Canada. She was presented a Colt pistol by the US government, and a Winchester Model 70 by the Canadian government, now on display at the Museum of the Soviet Army in Moscow. The Model 70 would later be used by Hathcock in Vietnam. Useless trivia, but cool nonetheless.
when i think of all the hunters of gunman who have hd great success and not needed any kind of "interviews" im glad to be part of the USMC family. Carlos hathcock made me grin at the age of 12 hearing his exploits!
Love this. What a great way to spend my birthday. Listening to the Shawn Ryan Show is a gift in itself. While I don’t always agree with everything said on the show I never fail to learn something and be entertained!
Our guy finished number one, Guard guy 278th ACR, he said you are not passing the course if your spotter cannot spot. Yep, not Ranger/SF/Infantry just a good ol boy from Tennessee. The most transferable input he gave us was on the cammo philosophy. Physically he said it was tough more of a misery factor. He is right, looking close in out is a skill.
The stalk is the hardest part of any sniper school in my opinion, alot of people can shoot but stalking and taking a shot and then getting out and not being detected is difficult
@Shawn Ryan Clips I appreciate how you break these interviews up. I just don't have time to watch an entire interview usually so I catch a lot of the clips. Thank you. I appreciate what you do. Would love to see you interview Don Shipley. (You'd probably enjoy that too)
The white feather had a contract for his head from the NVA and he also said that the best kill was the one that went through the scope that killed the Enemy Amen!!!!
@factanonverba6169 By his own estimates. Unfortuntely, that number is unconfirmed, as impressive at it is. Häyhä sniped Soviets as they marched by wearing uniforms that made them easy to see against the surrounding snow. It's a bit different than having to identify and stalk targets. Häyhä may have the most kills, but I wouldn't rate him as the best. I'd rate some of the female Soviet snipers above him, where it comes to skill. For example, Lyudmila Pavlichenko and Roza Shanina. I still wouldn't want him shooting at me, however.
I’d love to hear from some of the pilots who drop these tier 1 boys on their targets. They’ve got to have some serious stories about flying damaged aircraft, evading enemy fire and working in that environment.
Dear Shawn, first of all; thank you very much for your service even till this day. Although I am a little upset by the fact that you did not know mr Hancock. Why is he not teacher material in every branch of defense globaly. With kind regerds some dode from Holland
So funny how Jonny Kim(Navy Seal, Seal Sniper, Seal Medic, Seal Diver, Harvard Medical School, Doctor, USD 3.98 GPA, Naval Pilot, Naval Helicopter Course, NASA Astronaut) is humble, all about team vs. Reaper (Ranger- 5 plus years in military, completed Sniper 1 school, kills mostly 100 yards, 4th in military sniper team competition, wouldn't qualify for advance schools due to color blind or Special Forces ), I am the best..... What a contrast in personalities.
😂 you must have race on your mind... The Reaper just called Carlos the best sniper, from the 'Nam era no less. Carlos was snipping Kims left and right 😅
Man, this stupid generation doesn't do HISTORY. The marine corp sniper training is based upon Carlos Hancock's techniques and accomplishments. The brass fought him tooth and toe nail. One man, one bullet succeeded in killing more of the enemy than all of the bullet spraying from one man knee jerking full automatic fire. The psychological effect of one round blowing away a high value target that has a heavily defended position is very demoralizing........😊😊😊

Everyone is obsessed with 1000 yard sniper shots. Glad this guy put back some reality that most shots are under 300 yards
Finally someone said smth
2 years ago I listened to a sniper in Ukraine who fought there since 2015, newsflash it aint started in 2022, he said that almost all of his shots was up to 400m
Cause that's the farthest he can shoot. The video of him shooting on bunkers video shows he doesn't know that much
@@sgtslippyfist6345 doesn’t change the fact that most sniper engagements are at much closer ranges and 1000 meters kills are extremely rare
The military took snipers from every branch and ran them through an exercise and the majority of them either miss the Target or got other details wrong they then worked backwards to determine what range will every sniper in the military hit every time and that range was 200 m

He likely did know. He asks him to elaborate for the sake of audience members who don't know who that is.
Agreed. I thought everyone in the military knew that.
Shawn knows. But he asks questions that seem obvious all the time because he knows listeners might not know.

I was in the regular Army as Apposed to the Irregular one that had to have diarrhea old joke I used to think about but never say Amen!!!!
QUESTION? How does a former Navy SEAL not know who Carlos Hathcock (Marine) was? The greatest Marine Sniper to have ever served......

Remarkable you did that / great job wow! Makes me think if I could do it ! I’m sure I could!
