When these episodes came out, the US was fighting the Iraqi insurgency... The decision to make episodes like this when that was going on, was beyond edgy for the day.

The planet content was mever meant to anchor an entire season it was a springboard from a ton of interwoven stories and it works magnificently

I love this discussion about why Lee lost his edge and got fat. There will be some flashbacks.

This is where Tigh became my favourite character. He's no longer just Mr.Lahey from Trailer Park Boys on a spaceship.

GREAT conversation guys. Mike gets the trophy this week for my favourite comments 🏆 I burst out laughing (giving the cat a hell of a fright) when he said Tigh needed therapy, you are so very right and Mike also mentioned Cally always being Galen's second choice - very insightful - keep an eye on that. I genuinely appreciate that you all saw Ellen's behaviour for what it was - whatever it took to get her husband out. That the webisodes immediately gave you deeper significance to Duck's visit to the Temple before he goes to sacrifice the NCP, makes me hope that Joe sees the benefit of them now.
What I appreciated most about the discussion, was you all considering the triggers to Lee's mental health as regards his weight gain. You all made excellent (and correct imo) points, Mike in particular for picking up it started before the Cylon return. That last note gives the clue you need - something happened between settling on New Caprica and the arrival of the Cylons that took Lee's drive away. From that already vulnerable point, the return of the Cylons just emphasized the rest of Lee's troubles.
Leoben and Kara. None of you mentioned something I think could have helped you spitball the situation. Remember way back in S1 Kara had to interrogate a Leoben model? He knew who she was. "You have a destiny" So obsession is the factor, it's not just about her general awesomeness though.
A fantastic run of episodes on the way, can't wait to share them with you.

who would have believed a year ago that Adama would have tea with Sharon, and that these would be his only moments of peace!!

I liked how this review started vs how it ended .
The beginning was like "don't like ground stories, where's the Stargate, this is just for saving money, hello Canada... 🙄" -- and then there was this enthusiasm as the episode ended where you couldn't wait to speak about what the individual reviewers found interesting or funny or gross about the episode .
For me these are the peak BSG episodes . Yes, there will be other highlights, but the humans falling apart, while the Cylons also begin to fall apart in real time -- as we begin to see the different opinions & thought processes line up and become established -- these are formative moments for both sides .
I would add one correction about not knowing how to live side by side -- the Cylons did live as servants of the humans who made them for a while before they originally rebelled . So it's not exactly true that they don't know how to live with humans or that humans are totally alien to them .
In fact, Cylons had the opportunity to observe humans both as "masters" and as opponents in war -- which would mean at least some understanding of the culture & the cultural clash prior to this series of events on this planet .

Wow good point about them living side by side, always forget about the first war!
Also thank you for your kind words.

Ellen doing Cavil to get her hubby out is brave...her version of bravery. I don't like her but in this case I love how down she is for her hubby using her toolset, sex. She has to do what she needs to do to get her man out. But to what cost???

This is the episode where we get to see JUST how deeply they're connected. It's far more than simply a toxic marriage - there's something truly meaningful about it.

I always thought their relationship was written really well. You think its just the usual toxic I hurt you, you hurt me stuff but as the seasons go on you discover the depth and the layers of their relationship and constantly realize how wrong you were at the beginning. Also its damn fine acting on both sides. Really good stuff.

To reiterate: the episode, which aired on Oct 6, 2006, ended with a suicide bomber killing local civilians being inducted as police officers under the auspice of an occupation and a friendly government beholden to the occupiers... Punches to the allegory were not being pulled.
Fat Lee- the horror that the "Bamber Bunnies" felt was hilarious when this episode dropped. And yes, the Cylons are back, but the FLEET hasn't been fighting (training is not fighting). Plus, it wasn't until this episode that a signal was received- i.e., the first time they got evidence that their ARE human survivors alive to rescue. Not to mention, its not just a lack of motivation at that point, but depression & stress (which can lead to weight gain).
Helo wasn't giving him a hard time; there's a difference between pushing soldiers and breaking them, and Helo was trying to point out Adama was leaning towards the latter.
Oh- and not to overhype, but the fourth episode this season, HOLY🪣💧SHIT its coming...

My favorite most underrated character? Leoben. He is in a way the Amos of BSG, having complicated motivations that have not been revealed. LittleFunnyGal saw him as a creep stalker. Here's a thought... why would he allow himself to be killed again and again with little to no building animosity towards Kara? it might be worth going back to season 1 Flesh and Bones where he appeared in Roslyn's vision and claimed to have planted a bomb in the fleet. This Leoben model is is that Leoben model.

I was exactly where Joe is wrt to the plot/setting at this point, so I appreciate the honesty! It's impossible to love all aspects of a show, and it kind of devalues the praise if we can't admit when we're hesitant/cautious/not into it.

    Known Cylon models so far:
    Number One: John Cavil
    Number Two: Leoben Conoy
    Number Three: D'Anna Biers
    Number Four: Simon O'Neill
    Number Five: Aaron Doral
    Number Six: Carpica-Six*
    Number Seven: N/A
    Number Eight: Boomer/Sharon*
    Number Nine: N/A
    Number Ten: N/A
    Number Eleven: N/A
    Number Twelve: N/A
*Caprica-six is not the name of the model it`s the name of the single Number Six model that seduced Gaius Baltar, just like Boomer and Sharon are both number eights, but are different individuals!

Thanks for the 'O'Neill'! I had seen that somewhere, but couldn't recall if a surname for him had ever been given.
And I clearly recall Laural calling Leoben 'Conroy' in season one.
