Trinity Alps Wilderness - Solo Backpacking and Fishing - Stuart Fork Trail to Emerald Lake

  • Trail Description
    Drive to Trail Head - It’s a fairly easy drive to get to the trail head which is located just North of Weaverville. At the time of making this video permits can be picked up at a self-service kiosk outside the Weaverville Ranger Station. The trail head is about 30 minutes North of Weaverville. You have to drive through a campground area first and the last 1.5-2 miles is a dirt road. There are some rough patches but nothing too bad. I saw a Prius make it to the end so not the rough. There is room for quite a few cars but I could see it getting crowded on a busy weekend in the parking lot. This is a popular trail in the Trinity Alps and there are no campsite or reservation quota systems so it’s easy to go when ever.
    Trail head to Morris Meadow - The trail follows the river up to the meadow. There are multiple campsite located next to the river. Probably one every mile or so. Water was plentiful in early June with small streams flowing. I would not be concerned about water on this trip. Dogs are allowed and I think this would be a great trail for them because they can cool off frequently. The trail climbs gradually and is well maintained throughout its length. Morris Meadow starts around mile 8 and continues for around 1.5 miles. There are plenty of established camping spots around but this is a popular place to stop so the best sites may be taken. The further you walk up the trail from the initial opening the less people you will see.
    Morris Meadow to Emerald Lake - From the Meadow up to Emerald Lake is a bit steeper, has more rocks, and some rock stairs. It’s popular to day hike to the lake from the Meadow but I decided to stay at the lake. There are two more lakes that can be reached from Emerald but I did not go up there.

    I don't like looking at the same view twice.
    Those deer are always there. On one moon lit night I old see these little black circles moving around on my tent.
    It was there little nose they where rubbing on my tent.

    I keep watching this video, just because I wish I was there and not at work… I get to the point you’re blowing up the sleeping pad, and since I watched this last, I purchased a pretty noisy “Tiny Pump” which blows up my pad pretty quickly. Not silently, but without myself having to blow it up.

It would be extremely cool if the two of you could do a trip over in Norway, as you mentioned in that last trip up in the Boreal forest.🤙😎

    For lks I use water weighted clear plastic bubbles and flies. Lures work also...flies are deadly. Streams still use flies or if you can bugs under the wet rocks or grasshoppers for bait.

    thanks for posting kyle. always enjoy your videos. Try a simple worm on a hook and a small split shot weight depending on the depth of the water, vary the weight, you want it to bump bottom but also go along with the current. The lures you have should work also but sometimes worms or even a grasshopper(live bait from local area, match the hatch technique)work best. Try at the bottom on falls and the deeper pools!! Cheers

    Get a fly pole for mountain streams, if your committed to spinning rod try a tiny rooster tail, bring a variety of colors, sometimes a simple spoon will work as well, keep it small. As for your mattress, get a self inflating one or if do not want to spend the $ they make foot inflators that are pretty small and cheap.

    I use a ThermARest Air-Tap Pump Kit with my pack liner bag.
    It would work with any sturdy plastic bag: Nylofume, trash compactor.
    It is much easier to use, and it doesn’t put moisture in your air mattress like breath.

    How do you like the Kuiu jacket? Super down?

    • @BurleyOutdoors
      @BurleyOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes its the super down jacket by Kuiu. It looks like they have updated the jacket now to the "super down Ultra" that has a few tweaks. I have had the jacket I'm wearing in this video since around 2015. At the time this was one of the first jackets on the market with water resistant down. It has held up well over the years. The face fabric is a little bit heavier than some of my Patagonia and Arcteryx puffy jackets. The Kuiu jacket works well with a light/medium mid layers down into the 20's. For winter use of high mountains I carry a heavier puffy. My only critique is the stretch bindings around the arm holes has warm out and lost its stretchiness. I would prefer a velcro cuff.
