  • Jim Bouzaglou tackles the field at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the 2011 Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion. An incident with another Cobra on his first lap leaves him having to claw his way back through the field to regain position. This is an edited version of his first of two races from Saturday, August 20, 2011. The cars in this race are all part of Group 7A, 1963-1966 GT cars over 2500cc. Jim's car is #59, a 1964 Cobra 289 USRRC Competition CSX2484.

I was in Navy boot camp with a guy whose father owned the Shelby Dealership in Garden Grove. I owned a Sunbeam Tiger at the time. Got to get a few "test " drives in 289 Cobras until I had to go to Electronic school. Later I owned a 66 GT-350 SCCA BP car that I ran in Hawaii. The original owner crashed his 65 GT-350R at Bridgehampton and then bought a 66 street car and swapped all the parts over. At Riverside in 1969 the car set a speed record being clocked at 157 MPH on the straight with 4.11 gears at the Riverside Time Trails. Since those days I have also owned 2 more Tigers and a Boss 429. Today I have a 2017 GT-350 that I only autocross. I raced for 20 years in the SCCA driving Mazdas and Mustangs. Did not get to run any West Coast tracks. I really miss those roadsters, big or small block.

I drbeove a 289 Cobra once at Summit Point Raceway. Street version. Terribly handling car. Race version simply had better power to weight ratio. Closest race I ever had was at Watkins Glen against a GT350R. That car was fast & driver was good. I pushed my Sting Ray to the limit with oil and water guages maxed out. I thought sure the engine would let go. But I remember thinking I traveled 6 hours to race and if the engine goes It goes. It held! We were about equal on straight but I could get by in corners. Finally got him with about two laps to go.
