    I find the physics of saxophone/wind instruments fascinating. Overtones/longtones are sooooo necessary to playing the saxophone beautifully.

    Fantastic, a comphrehensive demonstration of overtone pracrice.
    First time I've seen such attention to detail, such as not shaving so we can more clearly see the effect of voicing on the lower jaw. Genius! 🙂

    Thankyou Dr. Wally! What a treat! I listened to "Willow Garden" last week sometime, then wrote out all the notes, and here it is, in the latest Fun-damentals Book...Pretty tune! Lots to get through in this, so will go practice!!

    I have no idea what going on. Are you playing the linear scales without the octave key? I can’t see how you’re fingering. Thx

    • @aranzabonanza7231
      @aranzabonanza7231 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      same fingerings without the octave key -- you just blow a different way, I focus my breaths as if I was blowing a candle

  • @dk7472
    @dk7472 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also, why do so many exercises start with the first overtone note played normally? For example: first middle C played normally then middle C played by fingering low C. I've seen it in almost every overtone exercise I've come across. Moreover, should we match the tuning of the overtone to the normally fingered note, or the other way around? I thing the overtone is just- in tune with what the "0th" fundamental, but I'm not sure...

  • @enispenvy9174
    @enispenvy9174 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm struggling to get the first octave to come out. I can play the 5th above the first octave and I can play the second octave with no problem. I can't get the first octave to pop. Is this typical when starting to work on overtones?

  • @peteboynton4536
    @peteboynton4536 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a little confused by one thing I saw in the video. You said that overtones are produced with tongue position and voicing only i.e. your fingers stay in the same spot. In the last exercise for the C overtones I see you move your fingers to produce the high E. I must be misunderstanding something.

    I’m curious whether you like to use a specific mouthpiece for playing overtones. Was this a classical setup you were playing for the video? I seem to notice certain MP/reed combinations facilitate having them pop out more easily.

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do all my fundamentals on my classical setup - sound and technical studies. It's not easier to produce the overtones, but I like to approach my 1st hour of practice form a "concert/classical" base. Good question!

    • @dk7472
      @dk7472 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drwallysax A strange thing that I have noticed on my end is that the first, second and third fundamentals are so much easier on my classical mouthpiece and reeds but altissimo is harder; but on my jazz mouthpiece reeds, the converse is true. Not sure why this is yet.

    Is there a difference in voicing or effort in producing overtones on the different saxophones--soprano, alto, tenor, bari?

    • @drwallysax
      @drwallysax  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! They all feel very different, I find them quite difficult on soprano and super easy on Bari. Lower partials feel wonky on tenor to me (but that's just how much time I spend with the horn).
