A friend and I were slamming beers one night and he mentioned a band that I had never heard. The next morning I went online to search for Opeth. Patterns in the Ivy popped up. Loved it. Drove to the nearest record shop and bought Blackwater Park. I was so drunk when he was telling me about this awesome band that I thought he said Opeth but said Otep. That was about 20 years ago. Hail Opeth and beer!
Very glad you misundertood him. I love all forms of music but Opeth are masters of writing heavy, dark, even slow songs that bring you to tears. Go listen to Still Life (1st album), Damnation and Deliverence! Fucking Masterpieces! If they ever come to your town go get tickets ASAP! You wont regret it. Ive seen them 4 times in concert and they put on one hell of a show. Cheers
@@IncinerateThee Still Life is a fricking masterpiece (along with Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park in my taste), but it's actually their fourth album. Before it came Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms Your Hearse.
I love that Mendez actually plays the fucking bass. He’s not just playing “big guitar”. He’s writing bass lines. Not just copying the riffs note for note. Which is one of the most annoying things with metal. One of the best bassists in metal history imo.
The only place where I find that kind of bass playing is acceptable is in 2 scenarios. When the guitar riff is just that cool and u gotta join in (or like breakdowns I guess) and the other is djent
Absolutely. Every Metal bass player should be modeling themselves after him, and Metal bands in general should start learning about MUSIC and proper arranging for instruments more and not just sit there coming up with "badass riffs" that sound like their favorite bands.
Best Comment. People of prog metal look at DT as absolute legends in the genre. But to to me personally, Opeth are far beyond them in all aspects. Writing, performing and everything in between and post.
@galebe135 We typically get to see the instrument that's being played, so it would make sense to shove a camera down Mikael's throat and see what his vocal chords are "playing". Unironically
I don't know how many times I've listened to some of the Opeth albums (hundreds each for Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Heritage), but I always come back. The new one is just fantastic. It feels like Blackwater Park and Watershed got together and had a kid...
Definitely one of the best bass players around. He makes it sound so easy and then you see what he's actually playing and realize how much more intricate it really is.
Martin is a legend. Been an Opeth fan for 22 years. Still my favorite band. Something about seeing them today, a little older, but still those guys I saw live at Shepards Hall that just blew me away with their badassery, that just makes me smile.
@@DM-il1hf yeah, it was great! I came all the way from México (I live close from the border to Arizona). It was a great experience to see my favorite band.
One of my favorite bassists. Mendez rocks. Also I love this song, I haven’t heard the other song they released from the album nor the reactions because I want to experience the album fully. Cant wait, got mine on preorder.
I don't think he is. I mean, bassists in general are underrated in metal, but Mendez has the same responsibility to Opeth's sound as Chancellor to Tool IMHO.
I’m so stoked that the death metal elements have crept back in to the music. I love prog but I go to Opeth for what regular prog doesn’t have which is that super heavy death metal side. I grew up on death metal so I yearn for that stuff and no one did it better than Opeth. I liked the last few albums but this is more to my liking, glad they are back…
I thought they were completely finished with modern sounding guitars and drums and there were not supposed to be any more growls in the future. I absolutely love this

Listen to Ne obliviscaris brother. Very similar to Opeth in many ways, but very unique and has some of the best basslines you'll ever listen to 💯
@@joaoborin8367 I saw those guys live last year. The bassist was tremendous.

Yeah this guy is iconic
LeoBassCovers furiously taking notes as we speak
Waiting for his comment
Cringe. Is he deaf?
Hahahah LeoBassCovers is the GOAT for prog bass covers!
He's cooking as we speak lol
DAMNIT
I see Martin Mendez I click
Simp.
That's how I felt about Martin Lopez. But, I will say their new drummer is right up there!
This man has been holding down the groove for years with multiple drummers. Truly great player.
A majestic cover of The Martin Mendez Band - §1. Thank you for being so fucking awesome The Martin Mendez Band, see you guys in Monsters of Rock 2025.
I'm a simple girl, I see The Martin Mendez Band I click. Another US leg before long please guys 🤘 the sound was phenomenal
Seeing Mendez live last month was an honor, what a legend.
It was fantastic seeing Opeth and Tribulation recently. So glad I did was an amazing show and been 19 years since I last saw you guys.
That to long of a time to not see them live!
@IncinerateThee I know! Craziness
Same. Sounds of the Underground in 2005 was the last time I had seen them and unfortunately missed every subsequent US tour after that
Most chill dude ever
The GOAT is playing, guys!
The Martin Mendez Band - Paragraph One
Not one member in this band should be looked down upon, all so underrated, absolute legends
Best Comment. People of prog metal look at DT as absolute legends in the genre. But to to me personally, Opeth are far beyond them in all aspects. Writing, performing and everything in between and post.
Gods among men
r/imaginarygatekeeping. Opeth are as praised and recognised as it gets for a prog. metal band. Their music is too much for a casual listener
Growlthrough next please 🤘😈🤘
Lmao
Would unironically love to see a vocal playthrough for one of the song of the album (single or not)

What a tasteful player, so smooth.
Mendez is the boss of bass! Love his playing and tone. And what an incredible song this is.
Now, if we can just have you guys get Martin to do every single Opeth song that would be really great
That lick he plays around 3:31 underneath the beginning of the guitar solo issooo sick. I didn't noticed just by listening

I saw Opeth live and man, Mendez irradiates a peaceful vibe although playing Death Metal he is awesome
Zen bassist
Great Opeth still alive
Let's Go Opethh!!
I saw them live on the 29th of last month and wow. My favorite show so far and I'll definitely go see them live again.
I saw them twice back in feb 2020 (before the madness), and I loved it.
I was there too. The Van Buren is great! Incredible show. 🤘

Paragraph 3 has been released as well. Equally incredible. 🤘
Man it really shows the amazing work mendez does. I fully thought those octaves played at the start were done by an organ. Incredible
Amazing musician, always with a killer bass tone! 🖤
It was awesome hearing this masterpiece live 3 weeks ago. Martin Mendez is so underrated. Superb bassist 👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥
The man! One of my fave parts of Opeth, for such a long time already!
Martin Mendez is the Most Underrated Opeth member...
Mendez is one of the most underrated bassists in metal
Legit.
What do you mean? It's literally the Martin Mendez band.
I don't think he is. I mean, bassists in general are underrated in metal, but Mendez has the same responsibility to Opeth's sound as Chancellor to Tool IMHO.
Then you do not know much about the Opeth-Hiearchy and the respect Mikael gives him. You need to read some books.
Freakin’ fantastic, you are a monster player for this band & this music, Martin, and you are simply one of the best(.) 🤘🏼
Right here is the guy that got me into playing bass guitar! Pure class!
Great stuff as usual Martin!! Amazing album. THANK YOU YET AGAIN OPETH ✌️🤘
Martin Mendez The Great Bass Player
I love the Martin Mendez band
Buenísimo!!! Martin nunca defrauda en sus lineas de bajo, uno de mis bajistas favoritos en el metal.
Absolute titan of a bass player
I'm glad I started playing bass this year. So much good stuff to play just on the Opeth repertoire.
good luck
