A few months back I lost a rod bearing in my 95' Corvette and I was going to do a complete rebuild and beef-up of the original LT1. after doing some cost and power comparisons it is actually cheaper to do an LS swap and I get a bit of weight savings and more power. While I'm at it I will do a trans swap and ditch the automatic for a t56, haven't quite decided on a supercharger or turbos but even if I run the LS motor stock it is still a power upgrade from the LT1 boat anchor.

@Blake Pinette If you look on my page almost all the bikes in the videos are made from scratch in my shop including a ton of the bodywork(steel, carbon and fiberglass). In some instances we just modify existing parts to fit our needs. On top of bikes I started building cars at 14, I am turning the Vette into a full gutted and caged time attack car that will still be "street legal". It's just a toy and a teaching tool for my 13yr old son. Cheers :)

Let me preface by saying that your idea is not a bad one. An LSx with a T56 behind it is one of the most fun drivetrains there ever was. That being said, I'm not sure where you are placing your numbers. Swapping to an ls means a different computer, harness, and the effort that it takes to retrofit all of it. Also, the motor mounts are different, the exhaust is different, making the shifter fit depends upon getting the right t56 parts(there were several configurations). 95 corvettes did come with that trans so there will be room, but nothing about a t56 is cheap. Before I go any further I should mention that I build 4,5, and 6 speeds, and also small and big block chevys of all generations. Also, 4th gen vettes are some of my favorite cars, I've had a few. I'm not bragging, just clarifying that I am not a know nothing keyboard warrior with more opinion than experience. If you want power on a budget and the least hassle, rebuild that LT1. Those are stout, trouble free engines. The only problem they ever had was the optispark distributor, and that was only 92-94 because they weren't sealed. A freshened Lt1 with a cam and some goodies will make north of 400 horses with minimal effort. If that isn't good enough, they make superchargers for those too. If the engine is already out, you can build it with the right compression etc., for the blower and not risk melting the pistons out of it like so many people do when they put forced induction on a stock engine with 10-1 compression. Those engines get a bad rap because they didn't make them for long, they have only a few backward compatible parts, and they share nothing with the LS. They are not as light, but they are not heavy either, and they are just as small. Some people think they are better looking! Remember, most people don't much like that body style either, so to hell with popular opinion. Anyone that's ever had or driven one knows better. Even a late 80s model with less than 250 horses will cook your ass, it's the way vettes are made. Just my .02 cents. If money were no object, I would say swap away, but I get the feeling that your funds are not unlimited. With that in mind, I would say do the t56, but keep the lt1. Old dude (40) signing off.....😎

After learning a bit about engines as well as car setups my perception changed along with the questions I ask of a build. Things, like maximizing volumetric efficiency for more performance per liter and basically trying to do more with a little, is more fun to me than just shoehorning a V8 in something. Remembering that just mounting the swapped parts isn’t really even half the battle and once you’ve made everything fit then you can begin to tune, which is generally more fun. Once things stop being fun it can derail the simplest of projects so perspective and expectations play a huge role in one’s success of a swap or project.

I spent a very small percentage of my Subaru BRZ's MSRP on a few well chosen hot rod parts to fatten up it's low rpm torque: Just a header and a modest, conservative tune; nothing outrageous, just better drive-ability for my daily drive. When I describe my modest mods to typical drift car maniacs they just don't get it: they want the supercharger or turbo kits or better yet, the 1000 horsepower 2JZ turbo swap or an LS. I always point them to the SAVAGE GEESE you tube video on why he sold his supercharged FR-S. The short answer is that his highly modded car had become a maintenance nightmare. He didn't want a car that was a never ending to do list of repairs and shortcomings that needed remedies. And that's what his FR-S had become: a money pit with diminishing return on investment
I would only consider an engine swap for a show car or a track car, not for a daily driver. A show car with a crazy engine shoehorned under the hood? Fantastic: it gets pushed around more often than it's driven. A track car? You expect it to be high maintenance and hole you pour money into.

Whenever I start thinking a car needed more power I do research for what I call “factory precedence” meaning has the company who built this achieve my goal.
Such as when young dumb Adam in 1999 or 2000 wanted to make a 66 mustang fast guess what young dumb Adam do? Stick the biggest ford big block I can get my hands on and stuff it in, then tomfuckary ensues.
Now when Adam wants to make a 66 mustang fast I take time to figure out how actual engineers made this happen. I was shocked and appalled to learn in my mid 20’s to make a 66 mustang fast is to keep the 289 and replicate what the trans-am teams did. High winding 289’s with over 400hp shifting at 8,000 rpm. With the advantages of modern technology and new speed parts you can make a very reliable high winding ford small block.
If I want a fast Nissan I look to see what weird shit they did and so fourth and so fourth. I will say I do have a weird build in mind but it’s a passion project. A friend of mine who is no longer here always wondered what if Honda made a serious go in group A rally racing in the 80’s. His hypothesis, a third gen civic with a AWD wagon driveline shoved underneath and a duel can ZC motor.
One day I will build this monstrosity and I’m sure it’s going to be a nightmare but I’m good with it.

Im looking at 6k, leaving 600 for odds and ends that pop up in a swap like this with the only original part being the rear diff drivetrain wise and should be hitting 400hp give or take.
Thats with a fair price for the free engine i had, into a n/a fc that i found engineless.
*yeah used parts, this is as cheep as possible, used, let alone new rotary parts are still way up there.
      15k?
Maybe if a shop does it or youre shooting for deep 3 figure or 4 figure hp numbers.

Im not some ls fanboy, just where i am and where i want to have this car, a 13bt and then finding all the parts to make it last at 400hp.
This car is going to get run hard, and replacement parts are cheeper as well. Plus theyre more common and therefore parts are availible quicker.
If i could resonably keep dortios in this thing i would, and at some point ill have a 3 rotor fc vert cost and issues be dammed.

Engine swaps, I've seen more cars killed due to engine swap dreams. So many people start off doing the simple work: pulling the engine, buying parts only to end up letting them collect dust and then part them out. Its sad to watch.
I've done 4 swaps, 3 TDI swaps (2 into corrados and 1 into a golf) and 1 3.6 VR6 Corrado swap. Research skills, problem solving skills and MOST IMPORTANTLY the ability to read wiring diagrams are what I think people need to have or be willing to learn to complete engine swaps. Also the ability to realize you might get it wrong the first time you to try to solve something and you may have to redo something more than once.

Great video, and I laugh sometimes over these things, I have a mid 2000s dodge magnum wagon with a hemi that I want to build for more power. Friends laugh, keep saying I should get a different car and LS swap whatever because LS swapped everything is cooler... Several have LS swapped cars that you can't drive for more than 10 minutes because you have to fold up like a pretzel to fit in the seats with basically no footwells, and I am just like "Well, if I use my budget wisely, and understand what making more power will effect in the drivetrain, I should have no issues hitting the 500+ hp I want since Chyrsler offers a blown hemi at over 700 with a warranty and my car was designed to have this motor so it will fit and I can still keep my interior comfort, who is the dumb one?"

  • @TheBrokenLife

My basic thought on engine swaps is that if it's not "a lot" more than a bolt in, then sure, why not? Putting an LS where a 350 was, or a Jeep 4.0 where a 258 was, or a v8 in an I6 car that had a factory v8 option, is about where I end the thought process on what's reasonable.

I actually bought my last car with the idea of engine swapping it... ended up getting an 85 Fiero with the thought process of engine swapping a V8 into it because I have one laying around and it seemed like a good idea at the time.
The Fiero I ended up with, someone actually already engine swapped from a 4cyl auto to the 60v6 3.4L out of a 90's Camaro with a 5 spd. This, as you mentioned, is really your ideal kind of engine swap. Its all original equipment, so the swap is a direct bolt in, but the Fiero was never sold with the 3.4L... the biggest engine it ever got was the 2.8L, so you are getting HP and Torque with no loss in functionality. Everything just drops in and the car runs great (and I am embarrassed to say, it is actually faster than my Corvette).
Anyways, point being, this is one of those rare cases where this is an ideal type of engine swap... something that directly bolts into your car, comprises nothing in terms of weight, handling, fitment, or functionality and comes in at a low enough cost that the swap is actually worth it for someone to do. Like the Delorean example you gave the car isn't any more desirable as everyone seems to think these things just light themselves on fire everywhere they go (only the 84's ever did that and it was the 4cyl models that had the issue... granted at that time they didn't even come with a v6, but I digress) but again... all the parts cost so little that you can do it as a project and have fun with it while not really losing value on the car because everything still works.
Anyways, the car was fast enough and handles so well that I didn't want to ruin the handling characteristics by throwing another 100lbs in the back with a v8 swap, so I have decided to keep it how it is.
My Corvette on the other hand... well... I might end up swapping that up to a SBC 400+... but we will see ;)

I have weird engine swap ideas but I just build model cars that way so I can get it out of my system. The only swap I want to do irl is LS2 swap a Iroc Z. The 305 is a weak dog of a motor. Little things like rotation direction is definitely something people probably overlook. It would suck to build everything and then have 4-6 reverse gears and one forward one or absolutely destroy an automatic. Most of the time tho it’s probably gonna end up being an oh crap it turns the wrong way moment and then change some stuff up like a rear end to fix it in a rwd vehicle. Most of the time I don’t think that’s possible with trans axles and such but I could be wrong.

No one said you can’t do it and in this case someone with a lot of engineering expertise and the know of how to do it is simply saying engine swaps aren’t as easy as most people lead you to think they are and that’s why most swaps never get completed and most of the few that are completed either death traps or an NVH nightmare.

Great video. One thing that always stopped me from LS Swapping something like a 350Z for track use is, sure it'll be fast for a 350Z. But will it outperform a C6 Z06 for the money now that C6's are dropping in price? One more thing, maybe it'll beat a stock C6 Z06, but will I hit a lower (total package) performance ceiling with a swapped 350Z than a modified C6 Z06? I've done swaps back in the day but in on Hondas, taking the SOHC D-series motors out and swapping it for DOHC B-Series motors that were offered everywhere but the USA. Looking back I made it faster than a stock integra type-r but the type-r was still the better total package for the money.

I once swapped a 250 ci Chevy six to replace a failed 194 ci Chevy 6. Surprisingly easy when you stay in the family, and a 60 HP boost also. Also helped a friend put an aluminum Olds/Buick V8 in a 66 Jeep CJ. The Jeep had a Buick/GMC V6 from the factory, so it bolted right to the trans.

So, my question is, what do you think of the idea of taking a vehicle that had the smaller engine within it's option list, and installing the larger engine. Such as taking a Mustang with a 302, and dropping in a 429 Cobra Jet? I know there would be a lot of changes, suspension, trans, motor mounts, etc, but for those certain years, the car was optioned with that larger engine.

Casey. Can you speak on refreshing/ restoring a car? I am debating how much to put into my 06 Mustang Convertible, in refreshing it. I want to balance the things that would perhaps increase the resale value, vs even those things that won't increase the value but just make it look/feel/run better.
Since it is a 6 cyl, it will never have the value, nor become a collectible like a GT/Shelby/Mach, etc.. I like it because the s197 body has body lines similar to the 64 1/2 'vert. My mom owned one of those, so it has a nostalgic feel, thus a connection to her memory (though one day I will get the 64 1/2). I keep thinking, well if I replace carpet, fix leather and get new cloth on top, I might as well buy a GT that is newer, which would be the cost+refreshing of the old.
The main thing is determining the balance, but I am having issues weighing the personal/emotional/logical aspects.

No I am not looking to build a high power engine. Tube frames are light and id make the engine run as efficient as possible so the power to weight ratio is better than average. Of course it's a nice car, but everything left from Miata is a (modified) body with double A-arm suspension which is a great starting point )
