I'm a 59-year old carpenter in UK and have been trying to figure out how to use SketchUp to design some furniture I plan to build at home for a very, very long time with no success at all - until now! I can't thank you enough for finally helping me break the ice...!
DUUUUDE!! The tip for holding shift to switch from orbit to pan!!! Uhg, how did I not figure that out by now, this is pure gold that everyone needs to know, I was so frustrated just trying to navigate around the canvas. Totally changed my entire experience with SketchUp. THANK YOU!!!
You have no idea how helpful this is!. It has taken me 2 weeks to come up with a bookcase design. I have my ryobi batteries charging and I'm ready to double check my math. I tried sketch up and winging it, I drove myself nuts. Thanks Mike!
The cut list extension is helpful. I'd like to see a tips episode on using that, and I could use some tips on laying out dimensions on the model. I've used sketchup for a couple storage beds, a closet with sliding doors, and a double bathroom vanity, and you still showed me a couple things. Thanks a ton, and keep these coming!
I just learned this the other week. Instead of copying and pasting a component, select the component then select the move tool then press and hold shift while clicking the corner. This will do all three steps of copy pasting and move at once.
I enjoyed this very much, you did a great job explaining how to manipulate the different aspects of Sketchup to be able to design what we need to make. It certainly helped me enormously as I am trying to design something out of 2" x 4" lumber. Thanks great job~!
While I was watching you gave me some hope that I could create something, it didn't work for me at all trying to draw and make a sketch of 2" x 4"s. Could not get them to line up on the diagonal as I needed them too. I'll stick to paper and pencil for the time being.
I was drawing out a cart on my whiteboard earlier to try to figure out if it can have 3 shelves AND fit under my workbench with a 33" clearance. After watching this, I said screw that and I'm giving it a shot in Sketchup. It also helps because some shelves on the cart are to hold cases of beer, so I can make those solid components with their specific dimensions and see if everything would fit. This video helped a lot, thanks for this. Also, not sure if mentioned, but if you need to quickly orbit around your sketch, you can simply hold the mouse wheel click and move the mouse around to orbit. Hope this helps as well.
My fave “shortcut” is clicking and holding the scroll wheel on a mouse for orbiting and clicking and holding the scroll wheel while holding down the left button on the mouse to pan/move the view. Means you can move around your model really easily. Possibly only a good tip if you’re making larger scale models but still.
Hi Mike, these videos are helpful. But you shouldn't use control c and v. It's better and faster to use the move tool + Ctrl to copy components. Also, you can use the arrow keys to restrict to any axis.
Perfect! I have been running away from Sketchup but your video was very basic and I feel encouraged to give it a try again . I think I will be able to use it without getting overwhelmed.:) thanks again!
Great video!! I have been messing with Sketchup for a day or 2 and haven’t been able to figure it out. With just watching your video, I was able to completely design my new TV stand! Thank you!!
Thank u for making content like this. I just want to let u know I've been watching your videos since last year. It helps me a lot on my DIY project. And now im starting my own channel and pretty exited to build more diy project. I must say your channel helps me out to start this new journey of mine. Even if im not doing this fulltime because im a Tattoo artist fulltime. But this pandemic gives me a lot of time to do more project. Again thank u for sharing your knowledge to a lot of d.i.y.ers out this!! Stay blessed!!
Thank you so much for this wonderful content..I was a furniture designer for so so many years only using by hand and now this content is very helpful for me for a start up because I really want to learn more using sketch up this time so that I will not be using my right hand anymore in sketching.. leveling up is a good thing.. I am planning to create my another channel that focuses on my designing furniture because this is really the thing where I started.. I will be looking forward more on this tutorial.. and please let me know what apps I can use where I can also draw online by hand for faster quick sketch ideas.
Knowing my audience retention data I am not surprised people did not hear what you say at the and of your video Mike. Thanks for doing this I was looking for Sketchup tutorials .
Yo! The Chromebook Pro has been my mobile computing solution for a few months, it's great. Thanks for starting this series, I've been wanting to learn sketchup and make furniture like yours. Cheers
Excellent video! Made those basic steps really clear, hope you start making more complex designs, so we can learn more about it! This is a great start for a lot of us.
Yes! Finally. I have my MCSE, but i gave up Windows for Chrome years ago & have not looked back. I run my business & personal life through Chrome. Love it!
Great video thank you - very clear instructions and commentary. Is it possible to generate a cutting list of each component from the model? Thanks in advance. Dom
Nice video! Your last one inspired me to try and work out my latest project in SketchUp before buying material and everything. One really handy and not to complicated shortcut is pressing the mouse wheel as a button if you have it. This gives you all rotate, pan etc. functions w/o selecting the tool from the menu! Keep it up
Sketchup will figure out spacing for you, using /# and *#. /# is divide by number, *# is repeat by number. So say you want 3 shelves evenly spaced over 3 ft. You can make the first shelf, copy that one to 3' away, then type "/2" immediately and it evenly divides it in 2. Remember it takes 3 shelves to make 2 spaces in between. If you want to make 3 shelves evenly spaced by 1', then make the first shelf, copy and paste the 2nd shelf 1' away, then type "*2". This will repeat your copy/paste for a total of 2. This would've prevented you from having to do math to find the location of the middle shelf, and also made your stretcher placement go a lot faster. I'd also look at sketchupforwoodworkers.com. He does a great job with breaking down sketchup's features, the only problem is its now outdated because sketchup free is a webapp.
thanks for that eeguy77, I am loving that link. I learnt more from reading your post than I did listening to the add for Chromebook above. It seems like Mike Montgomery doesn't really know a lot about SketchUp but just wants more hits to make more bucks, as of today I've un-subbed him, but I am so glad I found sketchupforwoodworkers.com/ Thanks again for the link 👍
I need to learn how to create my own furnitures in SketchUp. I would like to design my own furniture instead of going to the 3D store and using limited furnitures 🙂
Hey Mike, great video. I have struggled with Sketchup but am finally getting the hang of it. Your videos definitely help as you explain things pretty well. Could you share some of the keyboard shortcuts in your next video. I find that once I learnt these it made the process so much easier
P for push Pull, M for move, Ctrl+Z for undo, M+Ctrl for copy and move, T for tape. L for line, E for erase, R for rectangle tool, Q for rotate tool, H for hand tool, Scroll wheel on mouse to move around, Scroll wheel on mouse up or down to zoom in or out, Space bar for arrow tool. I will post more as I remember them
This video is awesome. After watching your attic renovation video, you inspired me to want to build things. And this video was perfect in showing me how to get it planned out. I appreciate it.
If you don’t already have a video on alternative finishings for woodwork, like Wrapped, etc.. I know I am interested…. also I am looking to design my own recording workstation and in need of a program that is best for that any suggestions?
Hey Scott, the shortcut keys are already automatically set for your use. Example, Press L, Line O, Orbit P, Push/Pull This will speed up your day to day modeling. Hope this helps!
Hi Mike! Thanks for the video! Can you advise if there is an easy way to show the dimensions on the finished drawing so it can be printed and brought to the workshop? Thanks again!
Hey mike, thanks for this series. You should number the videos or something so we know what order to watch them. I started at the one where chris helps you but needed to start here.
Great video on the basics. I was wondering if you have made a video that covers rotation of objects (I struggled with rotating a bathtub and vanity that I inserted from the built-in objects).
Best way I've done a cut list is copy the entire design and paste it off to the side. Then explode each piece and "lay them flat (move/rotate to one flat axis)". You can then arrange the pieces to fit into standard sizes of raw material to minimize waste.
Great stuff - where was this when I was teaching intro to CAD in schools? One thing though, I thought the legs were tubes not solids. I get why you drew them as solids but I was interested to see how you would have approached that. You have me in now, keep going!
When specifying the dimensions of an object you don't need to put a space between the comma and second number. Instead of 3, 4 just type 3,4 then enter. I know it's only one keystroke.
Thank you for all useful informations out there ! I just wanna ask about how can I convert measurements from inches to Cm , I tried the settings but it won’t work!
I like this video. however, it be nice to see some basic shelf designs (framing). Like simple rectangles (like wall framing) before adding or cutting out other shapes. You started out great then i got lost after you made the first shelf. Also, I would understand it better if this was using for 2x4s or 2x6s and 1/2 inch boards...
I use photoshop a lot so it seems pretty similar but man that's gonna take some time to get proficient. I have someone wanting a custom made bookcase and I want to use this to present the idea bc showing him my sketch on graph paper seems very amateur..
Give this comment a ❤️ if you followed along and modeled the shelf with me!
Modern Builds modeled the shelf and now working on modeling my house's main floor. It's awesome that you do this
awesome man, thank you! i modeled right along with you

Thank you! Finally find a useful tutorial of sketchup free!
Thank You! Your vid made me a big jump in using the sofware.
Great video as an intro to Sketchup! Thanks for that!

Great video. Finally sketchup explained in an easy to understand way. I've watched other videos on this topic that are difficult to follow.

Appreciate this - very clear and helpful!

Really enjoyed this video man. I have been slowly learning SketchUp for the past month or so. The reference point info helps a lot. Thanks.
That’s awesome! Thanks dude
Super helpful!! Thank u for this!!
excellent presentation
Knowing my audience retention data I am not surprised people did not hear what you say at the and of your video Mike. Thanks for doing this I was looking for Sketchup tutorials .
Haha, very true!

Right on Mike! Glad you dig the series
This what just the video that I was looking for. Thanks for making Sketchup a little less complicated as I get started.
Thank you for taking the time to teach.
Oh man...this is IMMENSELY helpful. I've goofed around in sketchup just a little bit, but never really figured it out.
Wow man you made this so easy! Thanks a lot!!!
Excellent video! Made those basic steps really clear, hope you start making more complex designs, so we can learn more about it! This is a great start for a lot of us.
This is a great introduction. Quick and straightforward.
Thanks for this video!!! From Argentina 🇦🇷!!
Awesome video! Please keep the sketch up tutorials coming
Yes! Finally. I have my MCSE, but i gave up Windows for Chrome years ago & have not looked back. I run my business & personal life through Chrome. Love it!
Aww Thanks. Enjoy the ATL while you're here!!!
woW Amazing!... You are My Idol!
Great video thank you - very clear instructions and commentary.
Is it possible to generate a cutting list of each component from the model?
Thanks in advance.
Dom
Ngl this guy taught me something and he's hot. liked and subscribed
This video got me up and running again with sketchup. Thanks!
great vid! hope you had fun at the meet up. not sure if anyone said this already, but did you know if you hold CTRL while moving, it creates a copy?

Sweet! I’ll try that out
Awesome! Thanks
Thank you! this was the easiest and most concise tutorial I was able to find!
Great videos! :)

How do you dint that up for build?
I need to learn how to create my own furnitures in SketchUp. I would like to design my own furniture instead of going to the 3D store and using limited furnitures 🙂
Thanks so much for the video!
this is the best tutorial ever
even their official youtube channel did not do this

Man, I learned a lot from watching this. Thank you for putting this together.
thanx for doing this
i just started sketchup
Very great bro 😀😀😀😎😎😍😍
Very helpful...
Thanks, super helpful.
Ben is somewhere frowning...thanks for putting out this type of content
Haha, no doubt!
i was a long term viewer of yours but i did not knew that you have 2nd channel
Is there only 2 videos on the other channel? Or did I miss something? Thanks for the video
I subscribed your channel b/c of this great tutorial. thank you
thanks man, very helpful
If you don’t already have a video on alternative finishings for woodwork, like Wrapped, etc.. I know I am interested…. also I am looking to design my own recording workstation and in need of a program that is best for that any suggestions?
Shortcut keys will speed up your modeling process heaps! ;) Keep it up Mike!
can you set up shortcuts on the web version?
Hey Scott, the shortcut keys are already automatically set for your use. Example,
Press
L, Line
O, Orbit
P, Push/Pull
This will speed up your day to day modeling. Hope this helps!
very good video ! :)
This is great!
do you have a tip jar? this was very helpful.
thank you
Hi Mike! Thanks for the video! Can you advise if there is an easy way to show the dimensions on the finished drawing so it can be printed and brought to the workshop? Thanks again!
It did help!
Hey mike, thanks for this series. You should number the videos or something so we know what order to watch them. I started at the one where chris helps you but needed to start here.

Can you please tell me how you go about getting sponsors? And thank you fror Sketchup
Thank you! I've needed this type of video!

Outstanding! Thank you for this, Iooking forward to watching more of your videos.
nice!!!
Thank you so much for this demo. I have to go dig around your channel for how to handle rabbits on SketchUp
Thank you I appreciate your help with this videos, it's been some time that I like to learn sketchup
Hi, please can you do a video on creating 2d drawing on chromebook, thanks.
Thank you.
I'm so glad you made a video on this! 🤙🏼
Great stuff - where was this when I was teaching intro to CAD in schools?
One thing though, I thought the legs were tubes not solids. I get why you drew them as solids but I was interested to see how you would have approached that.
You have me in now, keep going!
They are tubes, but It didn't seen super necessary for this project since the ends aren't visible. I'll have to give it a shot sometime!!
When specifying the dimensions of an object you don't need to put a space between the comma and second number. Instead of 3, 4 just type 3,4 then enter. I know it's only one keystroke.

If u make a component, and copy it. If do some changes from the original the second copy component will change too.
Do you have a video of a cutlist of material components?
Can you generate a supply list once your project is complete?
I use photoshop a lot so it seems pretty similar but man that's gonna take some time to get proficient. I have someone wanting a custom made bookcase and I want to use this to present the idea bc showing him my sketch on graph paper seems very amateur..
Feets Inches looks so hard to work with. Is comfortable for you? Video very useful for beginners.
Component! That’s what was screwing up the other day! Thank you! *goes and subscribes to 2nd channel *
Nice
