This week I built a foldable sidecar for my bicycle from a broken wheelchair that i found on a junkyard.
The wheelchair was broken and no longer suitable to carry a person but i thought it would be a shame to let that object go to waste.
So i came up with a new purpose for it. A foldable Sidecar.
I challenged myself to design it in a way that basically enybody could build it even if they don´t have a shop full of tools. I only used a drill and an anglegrinder.

Brilliant, love it, just the answer for my dispersed car camping needs. FYI, the sidecar math probably isn't really relevant for cargo bike speeds. For motorcycles, there are 3 rules. 1. The sidecar wheel axle leads the "pusher" wheel axle, up to 4". 2. The sidecar wheel should "toe-in" 3/4" to an 1 1/4". 3. the bike should lean away from the sidecar, 1" to 1 1/2". The goal is a drive that tracks straight, riding no hands. Wonderfully creative work, presented really well!

I usually like Laura’s videos but this one is potentially dangerous, at 5:48 you can clearly see how slowly she had to make that turn and how much she was leaning her body. With a design like this when you turn right at anything over 5-10mph you stand a good chance of falling off or having to reduce your steering input because you can’t lean into the turn. If you’re forced to reduce your steering to stay balanced what are you going to hit or what’s going to hit you? If it was done so that it could hinge from 2 or 3 horizontal points along 1 axis it wouldn’t effect the ability to lean into turns at all(subject to the clearance between bike frame and load). Another problem with a rigid connection is that when the third wheel hits a large bump it will transfer that force into the frame, making the rider wobble if not swerve.

@@Therapistinthewhitehouse motorcycle outfits work fine, but they accelerate into right turns, using the increased speed of the outside powered wheel to turn the bike. It's a learnt technique and weird to experience. Not sure how it would translate onto the bicycle.

    • @patomahony9747
      @patomahony9747 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@fr3heart never driven a motorcycle combination.
As you say they have been around for years and I have never heard of complaints.
Been toying with this idea for a while now.
Getting older and legs not great when getting on or off.
With this option don’t need to step down at junctions etc.
      Also looking at trike options.
But I’m interested in doing this to an ebike
Only rule is to not cut , drill or weld on the actual bike frame.
Love the flexible shock absorber idea on the couplings.
The 2 seat kiddie trailer I have for my bike has clip off wheels like in this video plus they also have suspensions.
      I wonder ???
      Pondering ?????

Thanks so much for this. In May 2018 I bought a Biria Easyboarding bike because I have rheumatoid arthritis and it has gotten too hard to swing my leg up over the back of the bike to mount. I put the bike together, rode it joyfully for two days, and in a freak accident on my third ride stepped off my nearly-stationary bike and broke my fibula and upper tibial plateau. I spent the rest of the summer in a wheelchair, housebound, with an external fixator mounted to my tibia and femur. I haven't been on a bike since. This was the second time in 25 years I incurred a major injury on that same leg riding my bike. The first was when I ripped my ACL in half and had to have it replaced. It occurs to me that I shouldn't be riding anything with two wheels anymore, especially now that I have RA. I thought I should probably switch to a trike but I just can't bear to give up on my beautiful yellow, Biria Easyboarding bike so easily. So I went looking for sidecar ideas as a way to stabilize my bike. It seems like poetic justice to find your video teaching me how to turn my wheelchair into a sidecar for my Biria Easyboarding bike. THANK YOU! I'm now subscribing to your channel.

Great video. Came across this when searching for bike sidecars.
I currently have a 2 seat kids trailer that I use on my ebike. Great for grandkids etc.
Funny fact I bought it in Germany and had it shipped to me.
This has pop off wheels and suspensions.
Plus turns in to a twin buggy by folding back the drawbar and folding out a single swivel front wheel.
You have given me food for thought.
The single seat version of these would make a brilliant sidecar and possibly be made to fold up like yours.

2:21 from someone who understands the math behind (ackermann steering): you are absolutely right: Any other position for fixed wheels will force a slip angle on at least one tires while turning. Slip is wasted energy, something you don't want in a bicycle.
