this is not talked about enough, thank you shining light upon this internalised racism/colourism rooted deep in the hearts of the tamil people and tamil society as a whole
Back to back truth of Tamil cinema.. mindset of people and the directors needs to accept these facts . When a dark skinned makeup less heroine was cast in the movie “Chitha” , the reactions of people , the questions of reporters showed how shameless the society is to accept watching a normal looking woman who is gorgeous as beautiful. The definition of beauty was cruel .
Thank you for putting a spotlight on this issue. I hope we as consumers will change our perceptions and watch movies consciously and more social awareness!
We always thrive for what we don’t have. Colour has more impact. If a white man is called as white he is not offended If a black man is called as black he is offended he begs him not to offend him. Colour dose not matter it is the perspective. 👍
the intention behind calling some white or black should also be considered at this point. When we call someone white, seldom it is derogatory.. but the case ain't same for calling someone black. you can't accuse people of getting offended when they have faced oppression in many forms for things which aren't in their control. so yeah, more than perspective, I think people should be more accepting of others
i am 18 now . i've seen so many people commenting on black as ill not just in movies but in real life too . And when they potray women as fair in cinema it gives a mindset to people as fair is beauty and dark is ugly which basically reflects in normal lifestyle on people. now a days potraying a women in dark skin has became a pride as showing that they does not show inferiority complexes but only few films do that and feel proud of it , but it should be us there acting in it dark and dusky . i hope people come to a proper mindset and the potrayal of colourism ends in cinema. Great documentary 💕

Neelam production's movie Bluestar also had this problem. Actors had to put on a dark skin make up When you can actually cast Dark skin actors. Hope this Colourism/ Racism fades away from our Kollywood industry in upcoming years.
It is a good effort by the team to bring this issue in the visual media. Though it is not easy to change the mindset of Indians on color prejudice , this type of videos will open up discussions on this issue and may change people's mindset in future.
God, it's high time this issue is spoken about. When a European or a Sindhi is considered a Tamizh Ponnu and the hero's love interest, you know that the movies are sending a very toxic message to young South Indians. Conditioning their minds against seeing dark skin as beautiful. Luckily Malayalam cinema doesn't have this problem but Kannada and Telegu are the same.
Great work.! Loved everything about it. The only thing that irked me was most of them who spoke about colourism in this video were dusky people. Would have been nice to hear from a fair skinned person how misrepresented dark skinned people are.
An amazing document for the experienced and the aspirational directors. This also provide great awareness for audience regarding to respect the acting irrespective of color
So true! This documentary made me self aware about this matter, I'm dark; by the extrapolating this issue, I think I have been discriminated somewhere somehow without even me feeling it. That's not ok, we should take pride of our birth and voice agaist exploitation against colourism (Racism).
Someone very rightly pointed out, in 70s and 80s there were actual actresses who demanded the role/script for the movies they take on, and not just because of their looks. There is dearth of good scripts for females, be it lead or supporting roles, instead of being subject to needing rescue by the hero or just being there for song and dance.
Best wishes to the mind that chose to address this and to all who worked in it. The root of the issue is a lot more deep and cannot be merely confined to colonialism. Yet this needs to be widely seen. Congrats 🎉
Hi. Paro here, director of the documentary. I definitely do agree that there are many more cultural factors influencing colourism. However, this is a more niche topic about colourism WITHIN the film industry. The start of cinema in our country MAY have been influenced by western norms, of that time. We have mentioned it solely as a factor. While colourism itself cannot be solely blamed on colonialism, colonialism had a lot to do with colourism IN cinema. This documentary was made as a students’ project with a humble intention of starting a conversation, like we are having now! I really do hope future discourse deals with the topic more in depth! And thank you so much for watching the documentary and sharing your opinion.

It is a good effort by the team to bring this issue in the visual media. Though it is not easy to change the mindset of Indians on color prejudice , this type of videos will open up discussions on this issue and may change people's mindset in future.
While Neelam has produced this, I hope Ranjith also starts casting non-fair women actors as leads. He has been guilty himself multiple times.
Greetings from Malaysia! This documentary is very inspiring. It's an eye-opener for everyone.
Great work.! Loved everything about it. The only thing that irked me was most of them who spoke about colourism in this video were dusky people. Would have been nice to hear from a fair skinned person how misrepresented dark skinned people are.
great initiative! thought provoking...
An amazing document for the experienced and the aspirational directors. This also provide great awareness for audience regarding to respect the acting irrespective of color
Whitening commercials have always been a indirect criticism!
There is dearth of good scripts for females, be it lead or supporting roles, instead of being subject to needing rescue by the hero or just being there for song and dance.
true a pertinent topic for this generation
Somebody finally voiced it out
Great work, much needed docu, very powerful!
