Before there was Ramey there was John Cheek, great American bass. He sings everything under the sun with grace, modulating his beautiful and varied voice with style and class..just like his person, a class act.

Jean Deis was my uncle and I always admired his God given talent and I am so grateful that someone posted these wonderful arias to You Tube. I have enjoyed them so very much and remember Jean as such a gentle talented man. My father Harold absolutely adored Jean and was so proud of him. Thank you again for allowing a larger audience to hear his great voice.

I've heard many a dark tale about Herbert Breslin's greedy deeds. To be honest, this video did not dispel my belief in them (to say the very least), but I will say that I never knew that Breslin was so fluent in French and Italian. I guess he would have to be.

I was in Munich in 1983 and 1984 and heard James King singing Lohengrin , Florestan , Emperor in Frau ohne Schatten . Fantastic !!!

I heard him sing this role in Chicago in the 90’s and will never forget the beauty of that voice.

Pity about the first part of the Chausson. I attended the concert in 85. Muti had no affinity or understanding of French music and the orchestra was often too loud and heavy. Flicka sang beautifully.

Her wonderful joie de vivre reminds me of Anna Moffo.

Deutekom was one of my favorites ever since the first LP recital on Phillips in the 70's. I found her technique somewhat odd but her singing and expressiveness to be entirely valid. Also, I greatly appreciated her singular and easily identifiable timbre- an unusual attribute these days. Her dramatic coloratura performances in later career are spectacular. I suggest seeking out a private label recording of her Paris Opera performance of I Vespri Siciliani- easily found on line. Her lower range was fully developed and that penetrative top was still outstanding and freely engaged.
