    I note an advantage over the new Hornby one - the top of the tanks is modelled correctly. It is plating that folds over the tank itself and the seam can be seen whereas Hornby is just flat. Not massively noticeable, but certainly demonstrates the extra care Dapol/Rails have put in.

      Like their I gauge one however it is missing the hatch in the cab for the coal... Not an instantly visible omission but one that makes a real loco nothing more than a static exhibit! Hopefully I can position a crew in the way to obscure its omission.

      in later releases, Hornby have corrected this to some degree

    Great reviews Jennifer Kirk on the new dapol terrier. It ture the best model of the terrier we got so far but I did think the Hornby one it good for people who don't have a lots of money. But the hornby one in my book is so toys like to the new dapol one. Wizard that I found with my news Hornby terrier they didn't run that well. But the old dapol one a got in this the LSWR green is run a lot better. The flickering light look lovely in the new dapol terrier it would be lovely if you Jennifer Kirk done a video of it running in the night. Special beacuse as the flickering light look lovely can't wait to see it in the d class want railway of Sheffield are making to as the cab is more open up. But the details is top level on the new dapol one and would not need to be updated in 50 year or more in my opinion and even if a better one come out in the long future it will still be able to stay strong but I think the Hornby terrier will be updated soon they letter based on how good the new dapol terrier is. But I wish they put a coal load in the detail bag as it would give people the choose to do them own coal in or use the dapol one.
    Can't wait of my one to come want it the LBSC brown and if they good a will be going for one more and that would have to be LBSC stroudley improved engine green Brighton Gold But I would love to see dapol to the new terrier in more LBSC brown and the bluebell railway line black want they warn in the (1960'S) and SR malachite green with British railway beacuse I would buy them for sure.
    Keep safe as all Jennifer Kirk and great work rail of Sheffield and. Dapol.

    Excellent video Jenny! This is clearly a love to have Terrier and you have almost persuaded me to buy one but I reckon SWMBO might have something to say lol. The well thought out DCC Ready designed in is super on this small engine - retro fitting a decoder to the original Dapol/Hornby model was so fiddly to do. I think Rails have a winner here and many of their current sales will be down to your video. Nice one!

    A very positive review which makes my anticipation of my ordered one even keener. It looks too precious to weather but I will add crew, coal and lamps. When I look back at what r-t-r locos were available in the 1960's when I started modelling this offering is unbelievable!

    Thanks for a very informative review. Only point I would disagree with is regarding the benefits of sprung buffers. You point out how the sprung coupling allows sharper curves to be negotiated without buffer lock - sprung buffers also help with this and allow those of us who like to close up the loco-train gap as narrow as possible a little more leeway. As most (but admittedly not all) modern locos have sprung buffers I personally would see it as a backward step if manufacturers stopped providing them - certainly on premium priced models.

    I was initially concerned for how these would come out in comparison to the very good Hornby one, but this one is also quite excellent! The cab glow effect is superb and those metal disc brackets would look excellent with some fitted. The cab glazing is particularly thin, impressive!

    Thanks for that Jennifer, I’ve been really enjoying your videos as I’m a recent returnee to model railways. I’ve just ordered one if these as I agree with you, it looks really good.
    Looking forward to your next video and the arrival of my new Terrier.
    Kind regards,
    Martin.

    A very thorough and well explained review. I would, however, have liked an appreciation of the quality of the sound given that the speaker is already chosen.

    They've still screwed up the vaccum/air pipes. That model on the review should have a vaccum pipe and not an air pipe because it doesn't have the westinghouse pump on the side. It also doesn't have vaccum gear in the cab.

    Looks like a beautiful model. The only things I could spot from the details being blown up in the video- there's a bubbling effect on the Salter safety valves and the cab window frames. However I doubt that is visible looking at it without a magnifying glass. The other thing that the lbsc experts will know, was there a plate between the flare of the chimney and the chimney proper? I know on other company's locos the brass flare was a simply wrapped around the chimney and attached only at the flare base giving an odd effect looking down.

    It is good that Rails have brought out an Isle of Wight loco now that DJ Models has gone bust and their O2 Adams tank is no longer available. The Terrier was used on the Isle of Wight before the war to haul 4 wheel carriages, but after the war 8 wheel bogie carriages were introduced and the Terriers could not haul these up to Ventnor very easily, so the Terriers were returned to the mainland and replaced with O2 tanks. All the O2 tanks on the IOW were cut up at the end of steam except for one - Calbourne - which was purchased by enthusiasts to run on the Havenstreet Railway. The Terriers faired much better as preserved locos because they are ideal for use on a heritage line.

    I have just received my terrier and I came back to check your review as I was surprised a steam train was not provided with some coal. So surprised was I that I also checked with rails. Seemed an odd thing to do on such a lovely model. Good review by the way ive watched it twice now. :)

    I must admit ive never notice the between the frames motion on the real thing despite seeing them at least once a year for the last 15 ! It is a beauty though and I'm very tempted to go Isle of Wight for an OO model.

    I would be happy to have this or the Hornby version on my layout. They are both miles ahead of the old Hornby/Dapol model.
    However there are things about both models I like and don't like. I would like to see a head to head in regards to running qualities.

    Thanks Jenny as always for an informative video and I do appreciate you showing how to DCC Fit. I have the Hornby KESR model and this looks a step above especially the detailing and I too like the firebox flicker. If I do go for one it would be a Southern livery and I would go the whole hog and have the sound fitted version. Cheers Kev

    Its a beautiful model and this is only a slight gripe , have they put the shovel plate in the back of the cab from the bunker, i'm sure it was missing in the pre production model the back of the cab looks very plain that said it is still a fantastic model well done Rails / Dapol .

    I very much enjoy your reviews and samples, thank you. I was wondering, when you put wonderful care and effort into fitting decoders, could you also install a Driver and fireman? Kinda takes the "ghostly" void and driverlessness away.

    Hi Jenny. As you pointed out in your review, this model has many things to commend it. What I didn't get from the review was the randomness of the flickering firebox; all I remember seeing was a repeated sequence of nine rapid flashes, then the light going off - perhaps if we saw it running for a longer period of time.

    After waiting for so long, it's extremely disappointing to immediately see at least 2 major errors which should have been corrected before production - ie the extension coal rails should extend right to the back of the curved raves on the bunker and the tops of the side tanks have an incorrect profile, replicating Hornby's error.

    • @mattlander9119
      @mattlander9119 4 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @TheZeldafan57
    @TheZeldafan57 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd be hard pressed to say that this is the definitive version of the terrier as you kept repeating. Apart from very minor detail improvements and some parts worse than the Hornby model, for the extra money its a bit of a hard sell given Hornby's wide range and wide distribution of their models. I have Hornby's Stepney and Rail's Burnt Umber version, and to me the differences were basically negligible. The Rail's model had worse cab detail, worse wheels, less accurate brake rods, I would have a hard time recommending the Rails terrier over the Hornby one given the price increase with relatively negligible differences, unless you really like the firebox flicker.

  • @32Benjy32

    Comparing it too the O gauge version of the Dapol terrier, I think this too much money for a OO Gauge tank engine.

  • @jasonleary1073
    @jasonleary1073 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    having looked at your review dapol have done a model that s okay but your close shots show bits of poor paint affect if I was to buy a terrier it would be Hornby your review was in depth but flawed inn favour of rails and dapol to many rivet counters ruining the hobby and jacking prices up the fire box flicker is just a waste and something else to go wrong
