@@SamsTrains what if you built a layout on top of the existing 00 gauge one? eg the whole thing is on legs and removeable/stackable, so when you want to run some O gauge things you have it in position, then when you dont you just remove it all and have it tucked away out of sight etc.
Well compared to other 0 gauge brands Dapol is cheap. But for you Brits save your money, there will be hard times in front of you now after Brexit and I 6 month after Corona
Congratulations on reaching 70 thousand subscribers! And I'm proud to be one of them. The LSWR green looks very nice on the Terrier. I say that from my experience in Train Simulator. The reason why the LSWR bought two of them (46 'Newington and 68 'Clapham') in the first place was so they could be tested on the Lyme Regis branch, which ran from Axminster (Devon) to Lyme Regis (Dorset). The branch had gradients as steep as 1 in 40 and curves that were sharp enough to twist an engine's frames. 'Newington' became LSWR No. 734, while 'Clapham' became No. 735. In the end, three Adams Radial Tanks ended up running on the Lyme Regis Branch in place of the Terriers, and they did so right up until 1961. Thankfully one of those Adams engines (LSWR No. 488) is preserved on the Bluebell Railway. And - as was stated in this video - one of the LSWR Terriers is now preserved (as Southern Railway No. W8 'Freshwater').

I can’t believe it’s that expensive. Maybe one Loco in 0 costs thrice as much as the same in OO gauge? Of course you can’t collect them as OO. But if you add up the average amount a OO consumer buys over a year, I am sure it tops the price for a small O gauge loco. And in 0 gauge you can’t even collect the locomotives as easily because space is limited. It’s simply a very different type of railway Modeling. With a few coaches and a locomotive the experience is quite sufficient. As you can see in the video... I have even seen Gauge1 Märklin locos in Germany being sold for 300 Euros in good used condition. And that’s a much bigger and more complex loco than this one. What I mean is that if you are disciplined you can afford the hobby in every scale. Heck, i can’t even have more than a couple locos in HO for space reasons, and I am happy with it nevertheless. One nice cargo train and one nice passenger train. That’s it.
Hi Sam, I recently received a Heljan class 47 in virgin porterbrook livery, it ran silently and faultlessly and is a stunning model in my opinion, I highly reccomend Heljans 47s!
Shelf layouts can often benefit from a diode interrupting current near the end of the layout. This way, if the engine crosses the diode in one direction it will stop, but if the polarity from the transformer is reversed, it will proceed past the diode in the other direction no problem, since diodes only block current in one direction. Also, if you set up diodes this way at each end, you can use a Dalee automatic reverser to very simply create an auto reversing shelf layout. Great video as always, thanks Sam.

Same plus I really enjoy setting up a loop and getting to sit and let it go around on its own. It's quite relaxing when you got your scenery done up and of course a dark tunnel to get some use out of the lights. And right now that would be nice to get something in O scale going but without renting some space in my neighbors basement I don't see it happening soon.
Get a track plan book they have plenty of ideas how you can do it. I have a few for ideas and they are amazing. Any manufacturer like Peco and Hornby have one.

Sam you just arranged, signed, and delivered my death warrant!!!!! I sooooo want to go with O gauge, but my wife WILL kill me if I do.... problem is that I don't know if I can resist the temptation! I have to say some of the applied detail is not as accurately applied as I WOuld have hoped, like the front lamp, but have a feeling that that can be relatively easily rectified..... it's also interesting to see that the lining appears to be applied by painting decal.... that's what I think I saw with the overlap of the lining when you mentioned the accuracy.... However I still say .... well done, you have just had me executed!!!!! Great review.... ill see you in the next world!

Hello Sam, I'm relatively new into O gauge as well (about the past year). For the coupling, my solution was to dowel a short length of 0.9mm or 0.7mm brass wire (maybe 4-5cm) into a cocktail stick with a 2-4mm diameter j bent into the end. I've also seen it done by taping the same wire to the end of a pound shop torch. You may find either of these to be a satisfactory tool. I can also heartily recommend wagon kits from Parkside (Peco) if you're feeling particularly ambitious to build up an army of wagons, quite literally.
Fun fact they were designed as a suburban class of engine to be lightweight and have a high pulling rate which were to run over line with shallow ballasting. Let me get my book on this for more information.

Hello Sam! I love the couplings on these O gauge trains. In the US, we use a type of coupler that looks like a hand (both on our real trains and models all the way to N gauge. Not sure about Z or smaller) There are a few other coupler types over here but for the most part they are the knuckle couplers

I’ve never had a model railway before and I’m seventy-four years old. I came across a treasure trove of 0 gauge railway. Four hundred feet of track and a huge collection of rolling stock. Most of it is mint, unboxed. So the more you do on 0 gauge would be a plus for me. The collection is thirty years old.

My Dapol Terrier arrived from Rail of Sheffield mid week so got it out the box for a close look while watching your review. Mine in the BR black early version box number 7S-010-012. The steps on mine were intact. It is a great model and I love your review.
I bought the 00 gauge WC&P terrier back in November. My grandparents lived in that region while my dad and his siblings were growing up. thought it would be nice to own a little link to my family's past

Great review Sam, I would love to see some scenery along that stretch, just grass, ballast and a back scene where possible would make some magical scenes to show off the Engines. We had a massive attic layout and there was never any scenery on it, which looking back was such a shame.
hey Sam ive actually helped with a O gauge layout at a train aircraft and road show in various model form since they man who was a lovely chap couldn't couple them up since of a lil difficultly but he had the actual tools to couple them up so i gave him a lil hand coupling wagons and the locos up and he actually allowed me to run his O gauge layout from Kallum.
The fitting on the boiler is indeed for putting the water in the boiler (known as a clack/check valve (more commonly clack valve)). A lot of the time you have one piped up to an injector, and one piped up to a mechanical water pump (although sometimes they do just have 2 injectors, would have to double check in this case). Certainly most road engines have a pump and an injector, and my own miniature loco has a water pump and will have an injector (when it's finished off course).
Nice, a O-Gauge Loco with tradition. I have a 90 years old Märklin-Brochure and there was a Terrier-loco in O-Gauge for the english market back then! Then it was made of clockwork and of tin and was L.N.E.R livery. I like this Terrier-locos!
Hi sam, lovely to see this review. Watching your shows has given me back the model railway bug! I used to model in N-gauge, 00 and G scale. Sadly while I still all the models, I now only have room for my N-gauge which Iv just started a new lay off. After not doing anything with the scale for over 10 years, I’m stunned by how much the models have improved. Please as your my main site all things model railway, can you included more N gauge in your news shows? I only ask because the new steam range offered Bachmann and Dapol is quite poor, (unless you want GWR) , but I gather new things are coming and want to keep up to speed.

I'm hoping that in the future , I can have a layout similar size to yours with 3 00 gauge , etc but on the inside , 2 lines of 0 and N. Think it's a good idea to have all three gauges together. 00 will always be my go-to

What a delightful model. 😊 British tinplate (3-rail) O gauge trains are a charming spectacle, but this 'scale' model magnificently does the Terriers justice in detailing!
More o gauge sounds great to me. There are some unbelievably detailed models, however the price reflects the level of detail. Have fun Sam, I converted about 20 years ago and never looked back. The range of kits out there is astonishing, and the resale market is great. Check it out you can get some really great deals on older kits and update them with newer technology. Love your videos.
Great review Sam. Makes me want to get into O as well. But most of my cash being sunk into SM32 in the garden. As you have a shelf layout, what about reviewing a single car DMU next, say class 121 or 122 from Dapol. They would look great on your shelf and are perfectly at home shuttling on an end to end... Blue and white or green with speed whiskers, lots of great choices.
A stunning loco Sam, a wonderful review clearly showing why 0 Gauge is becoming so popular, and at this price, this is a great starter for most people compared with 00 Gauge...I'd love to see more loco reviews in this Gauge, as unfortunately, they are well beyond my finances these days.

OH MY GOD, WOW 😯 Excellent big review of your first O gauge model Sam 👍👍 I’m glad you bought a Terrier as they are excellent in O scale and I’m very excited for you to buy more locos & rolling stock in this scale in the near future. I’m also glad that the price of this model is £179 as that is the cheaper model in O scale to buy and that is a great way for any one who are going for beginners. The O gauge locomotive for you to review next is the ?-?-2 locomotive and (hopefully) carriage in the near future.

O gauge is great! you don't have to worry about coupling heights with the three links and sprung buffers are actually useful. also that slow speed is acceptable for the larger scale, i.e. the larger the scale the faster the speed.
I also don't know if you noticed but in the diagram photo thing on the front of the box has no steps and a condensing pipe, but when you look at the model itself, it doesn't have the condensing pipe and the step is broken off.

I've seen the original on the Isle Of Wight. It wasn't in use, the day I was there, but an 0-6-0 Hunslet Austerity was being used. You might find an old steel crochet hook useful for coupling and uncoupling. Even better, would be a stainless steel dental probe with a hooked end - these can be bought quite cheaply on ebay. Ever thought of a garden layout? O gauge is perfect for that, and you'd be able to get a circuit to run engines in with. A man who lived in the house at the end of my garden had one, and it was a thing of beauty. Cleverly, it had a section that ran through a tunnel, into his conservatory, so he could still run trains if it were cold.

I think, if I've calculated it correctly, that it would be an entire 8 times bigger than OO as you have 3 dimensions to play with meaning you would need to cube the scale factor to get 8. I would definitely go for O gauge if I could afford to go so big as you get so much more detail and it feels a lot more alive. Great video and I love the livery on the loco.

I’ve seen some comments about these being budget O gauge locos. Part of the reason behind this is (I think) that there is only one variation of pipework on the side of the cab, and only one type of cab.
I nearly got a terrier for my start in O. Instead my grandfather gave me his unwanted E4, which is basically a big terrier 😆👍 As for those A3s, I’m still waiting for the broken ones to go for sale so I can have a scrappers loco of a decent size for once 👍
I got to say Sam this was an impressive loco to see up close. The 0-6-0 Class A1X LSWR Terrier in O Gauge is wonderful and you gave it a very fair review. A beautifully detailed model from the small lamp irons the whistle, the paint lining and interior of the cab, etc. The permanence was incredibly good and smooth enough for its first out of the box running. Power rating can't be fully tested as you don't have much stock, but you can retest it again later. The motor looks good and should perform well over the months as you run it in. The quality is a bit shaky in areas, the white flecks in the paintwork suggest dust particles. Plus, on the ends of the water tanks, there is the moulding circle or ring, otherwise, a good well-made model. The value for the Terrier must be good as I've only seen prices over the £250 mark. It is an expensive gauge to get into and to gather up rolling stock to run will take a while unless you have deep pockets. It was great to see this Sam and good luck if you are going to expand on it further down the line. Thanks to Grandpa Trains too, in getting those first bits of stock for you to run and I enjoyed seeing this as an alternative scale on your channel.

I have exactly the same loco. A super model, but I doubt it will haul 10+ coaches unless it is on a downward gradient. The maximum number of coaches I have got it to haul are three Gresley coaches, even then it has wheel slip going up a slight gradient.
This is like a shunting challenge for the Terrier when it has to pull the red wagon to the other siding. :) BTW, I find it satisfying to watch the sprung buffers joining in towards the buffers of the red wagon! Looks like we have a reason on why the buffers are sprung! :P
00 gauge is amazing and can't be beaten in terms of value for money on average. But there is something particularly magical about the larger scales!. I saved up for ages to finally buy myself a live steam locomotive in 16mm scale narrow gauge. It is primarily a shelf queen that comes out for day trips on the rolling road...given the obscene price of track in that scale, my small wallet and even smaller garden (yard) paha. Would love to see more O gauge form you!. Great stuff!
Glad you liked the O Gauge Terrier, still waiting on bits to fix mine which wasn't too expensive, also finally gotten a wagon for it to pull round though still need some track for it! Planning on someday getting mine battery/RC converted so can run around the garden without conductivity issues. Also speaking of track, I've done major rework on my N Gauge layout, needed a bit more simplifying, did require me ripping it all up however. Wouldn't mind seeing more O Gauge reviews, as always enjoyed the video! ~James
Was bought broken so it's not all bad (and bit cheaper than others in SR Olive), still runs fine though, will be using it in a video to compare N Gauge with both OO and O... and also cause who can resist another Terrier!
21:03 Since your layout is so small to frequently run two locos, you should make the layout run on one controller and rearrange it as a layout with one main line with a passing loop and three sidings at each end of the layout (your shelf seems to have room for three tracks). You should try to get some Heljian O gauge Mk1s and utility vans as those could suit a shunting layout

I got a 3 rail O scale GP60M. The box it came in I think was like twice the size of your box. I got a Steamer I purchased used off Ebay and couple frieght cars. Excited for those to come in. The diesel I got also came with a smoke generator. Also is tmcc equipped but dont have money for the controller.
The only experience I have with O gauge (apart from exhibitions) is in the hobby shops _ recently I gazed longingly at a BR green 37 up on a shelf & felt I was seeing the real article as the painted details were incredible 😃👍
Brilliant review, superb engine! Nice job Sam. If you continue with O gauge reviews, it'd be cool to see you review one of Dapol's Pannier Tanks, or one of their newly-released 14xx 0-4-2 locos. Interesting review Sam - good to see this in the flesh. Not sure if its my thing. The kids have a some Lionel O gauge stuff, but never really been drawn back to expand (Price does not help either). Went US outline "N" for a while (Lots of great stuff there), but OO is always drawing me back!
Dapol has made O gauge relatively affordable compared to the ever more expensive OO models. Looking forward to their forthcoming class 66 in O gauge. Great to see your reaction to the larger scale and I enjoy your honest review of any model in any scale. Pete
As a lapsed modeller for many years (the Event has led me to set up a simple N gauge layout on the sideboard next to my desk) I've been seriously considering getting into the senior scale given the affordability (relative terms) and sheer volume of RTR stock now available. Unfortunately I still fear I've not got the space, but keep the reviews coming as I'd love to see a review of the Panniers and 14xx (when they come)

That Terrier is amazing, yes you should do more and try to extend the layout as much as you can. You should have got one of your 'oo' gauge Terriers and the 'o' gauge Terrier and put, them side by side to compare the size difference. Sam you are a legend, you are the best. :)

It's quite relaxing when you got your scenery done up and of course a dark tunnel to get some use out of the lights. And right now that would be nice to get something in O scale going but without renting some space in my neighbors basement I don't see it happening soon.
MEGADEUS the cost is annoying as well, one Heljan O gauge class 37 is 4 times the price I payed for my Bachmann OO gauge class 37.
Get a track plan book they have plenty of ideas how you can do it. I have a few for ideas and they are amazing. Any manufacturer like Peco and Hornby have one.

You get large knuckle couplers that you can sometimes replace with Kadee scale couplers if you want in US O scale
Sam you just arranged, signed, and delivered my death warrant!!!!! I sooooo want to go with O gauge, but my wife WILL kill me if I do.... problem is that I don't know if I can resist the temptation! I have to say some of the applied detail is not as accurately applied as I WOuld have hoped, like the front lamp, but have a feeling that that can be relatively easily rectified..... it's also interesting to see that the lining appears to be applied by painting decal.... that's what I think I saw with the overlap of the lining when you mentioned the accuracy.... However I still say .... well done, you have just had me executed!!!!! Great review.... ill see you in the next world!

Hello Sam, I'm relatively new into O gauge as well (about the past year). For the coupling, my solution was to dowel a short length of 0.9mm or 0.7mm brass wire (maybe 4-5cm) into a cocktail stick with a 2-4mm diameter j bent into the end. I've also seen it done by taping the same wire to the end of a pound shop torch. You may find either of these to be a satisfactory tool.
I can also heartily recommend wagon kits from Parkside (Peco) if you're feeling particularly ambitious to build up an army of wagons, quite literally.

I love the couplings on these O gauge trains. In the US, we use a type of coupler that looks like a hand (both on our real trains and models all the way to N gauge. Not sure about Z or smaller) There are a few other coupler types over here but for the most part they are the knuckle couplers

I’ve never had a model railway before and I’m seventy-four years old. I came across a treasure trove of 0 gauge railway. Four hundred feet of track and a huge collection of rolling stock. Most of it is mint, unboxed. So the more you do on 0 gauge would be a plus for me. The collection is thirty years old.
Gotta love a bit of o gauge!

Great review Sam, I would love to see some scenery along that stretch, just grass, ballast and a back scene where possible would make some magical scenes to show off the Engines. We had a massive attic layout and there was never any scenery on it, which looking back was such a shame.

hey Sam ive actually helped with a O gauge layout at a train aircraft and road show in various model form since they man who was a lovely chap couldn't couple them up since of a lil difficultly but he had the actual tools to couple them up so i gave him a lil hand coupling wagons and the locos up and he actually allowed me to run his O gauge layout from Kallum.

The fitting on the boiler is indeed for putting the water in the boiler (known as a clack/check valve (more commonly clack valve)). A lot of the time you have one piped up to an injector, and one piped up to a mechanical water pump (although sometimes they do just have 2 injectors, would have to double check in this case). Certainly most road engines have a pump and an injector, and my own miniature loco has a water pump and will have an injector (when it's finished off course).

Nice, a O-Gauge Loco with tradition. I have a 90 years old Märklin-Brochure and there was a Terrier-loco in O-Gauge for the english market back then! Then it was made of clockwork and of tin and was L.N.E.R livery. I like this Terrier-locos!

Hi sam, lovely to see this review. Watching your shows has given me back the model railway bug! I used to model in N-gauge, 00 and G scale. Sadly while I still all the models, I now only have room for my N-gauge which Iv just started a new lay off. After not doing anything with the scale for over 10 years, I’m stunned by how much the models have improved. Please as your my main site all things model railway, can you included more N gauge in your news shows? I only ask because the new steam range offered Bachmann and Dapol is quite poor, (unless you want GWR) , but I gather new things are coming and want to keep up to speed.

More o gauge sounds great to me. There are some unbelievably detailed models, however the price reflects the level of detail. Have fun Sam, I converted about 20 years ago and never looked back. The range of kits out there is astonishing, and the resale market is great. Check it out you can get some really great deals on older kits and update them with newer technology. Love your videos.

Great review Sam. Makes me want to get into O as well. But most of my cash being sunk into SM32 in the garden. As you have a shelf layout, what about reviewing a single car DMU next, say class 121 or 122 from Dapol. They would look great on your shelf and are perfectly at home shuttling on an end to end... Blue and white or green with speed whiskers, lots of great choices.

O gauge is great! you don't have to worry about coupling heights with the three links and sprung buffers are actually useful. also that slow speed is acceptable for the larger scale, i.e. the larger the scale the faster the speed.

I also don't know if you noticed but in the diagram photo thing on the front of the box has no steps and a condensing pipe, but when you look at the model itself, it doesn't have the condensing pipe and the step is broken off.

"Conjunction has been reversed." Brilliant bombast. I've just made my first O gauge purchase- a Dapol wagon and guard's van; god help me.
I've seen the original on the Isle Of Wight. It wasn't in use, the day I was there, but an 0-6-0 Hunslet Austerity was being used. You might find an old steel crochet hook useful for coupling and uncoupling. Even better, would be a stainless steel dental probe with a hooked end - these can be bought quite cheaply on ebay. Ever thought of a garden layout? O gauge is perfect for that, and you'd be able to get a circuit to run engines in with. A man who lived in the house at the end of my garden had one, and it was a thing of beauty. Cleverly, it had a section that ran through a tunnel, into his conservatory, so he could still run trains if it were cold.

I think, if I've calculated it correctly, that it would be an entire 8 times bigger than OO as you have 3 dimensions to play with meaning you would need to cube the scale factor to get 8. I would definitely go for O gauge if I could afford to go so big as you get so much more detail and it feels a lot more alive. Great video and I love the livery on the loco.

I’ve seen some comments about these being budget O gauge locos. Part of the reason behind this is (I think) that there is only one variation of pipework on the side of the cab, and only one type of cab.

I got to say Sam this was an impressive loco to see up close. The 0-6-0 Class A1X LSWR Terrier in O Gauge is wonderful and you gave it a very fair review. A beautifully detailed model from the small lamp irons the whistle, the paint lining and interior of the cab, etc. The permanence was incredibly good and smooth enough for its first out of the box running. Power rating can't be fully tested as you don't have much stock, but you can retest it again later. The motor looks good and should perform well over the months as you run it in. The quality is a bit shaky in areas, the white flecks in the paintwork suggest dust particles. Plus, on the ends of the water tanks, there is the moulding circle or ring, otherwise, a good well-made model. The value for the Terrier must be good as I've only seen prices over the £250 mark. It is an expensive gauge to get into and to gather up rolling stock to run will take a while unless you have deep pockets. It was great to see this Sam and good luck if you are going to expand on it further down the line. Thanks to Grandpa Trains too, in getting those first bits of stock for you to run and I enjoyed seeing this as an alternative scale on your channel.

I have exactly the same loco. A super model, but I doubt it will haul 10+ coaches unless it is on a downward gradient. The maximum number of coaches I have got it to haul are three Gresley coaches, even then it has wheel slip going up a slight gradient.
This is like a shunting challenge for the Terrier when it has to pull the red wagon to the other siding. :)
BTW, I find it satisfying to watch the sprung buffers joining in towards the buffers of the red wagon! Looks like we have a reason on why the buffers are sprung! :P

00 gauge is amazing and can't be beaten in terms of value for money on average. But there is something particularly magical about the larger scales!. I saved up for ages to finally buy myself a live steam locomotive in 16mm scale narrow gauge. It is primarily a shelf queen that comes out for day trips on the rolling road...given the obscene price of track in that scale, my small wallet and even smaller garden (yard) paha. Would love to see more O gauge form you!. Great stuff!

If the scale is doubled, the volume is cubed: 2 x 2 x 2. 2 long, 2 wide, 2 high. That is a beautiful locomotive! Love that color!

Glad you liked the O Gauge Terrier, still waiting on bits to fix mine which wasn't too expensive, also finally gotten a wagon for it to pull round though still need some track for it! Planning on someday getting mine battery/RC converted so can run around the garden without conductivity issues.
Also speaking of track, I've done major rework on my N Gauge layout, needed a bit more simplifying, did require me ripping it all up however.
Wouldn't mind seeing more O Gauge reviews, as always enjoyed the video!

Was bought broken so it's not all bad (and bit cheaper than others in SR Olive), still runs fine though, will be using it in a video to compare N Gauge with both OO and O... and also cause who can resist another Terrier!
21:03 Since your layout is so small to frequently run two locos, you should make the layout run on one controller and rearrange it as a layout with one main line with a passing loop and three sidings at each end of the layout (your shelf seems to have room for three tracks).
You should try to get some Heljian O gauge Mk1s and utility vans as those could suit a shunting layout
That would be awesome, but space will be a problem for that - the radius of the curves is pretty huge in O gauge - I will be extending it soon though! :D

I got a 3 rail O scale GP60M. The box it came in I think was like twice the size of your box. I got a Steamer I purchased used off Ebay and couple frieght cars. Excited for those to come in. The diesel I got also came with a smoke generator. Also is tmcc equipped but dont have money for the controller.

As a lapsed modeller for many years (the Event has led me to set up a simple N gauge layout on the sideboard next to my desk) I've been seriously considering getting into the senior scale given the affordability (relative terms) and sheer volume of RTR stock now available. Unfortunately I still fear I've not got the space, but keep the reviews coming as I'd love to see a review of the Panniers and 14xx (when they come)

That Terrier is amazing, yes you should do more and try to extend the layout as much as you can. You should have got one of your 'oo' gauge Terriers and the 'o' gauge Terrier and put, them side by side to compare the size difference. Sam you are a legend, you are the best. :)
