Please don't worry about her voice - even with Mayu's high-pitched fry, she isn't actually using her vocal cords, but using "false folds", and constricting the air flow rather than using her vocal cords for the sound she achieves. She has said that singing clean vocals is much more challenging and tiring for her than her growl (banshee screech). Most of the women that use false folds for their harsh vocals are much deeper than Mayu (Yukina from Hanabie, Tatiana from Jinjer, Courtney from Spiritbox, Melissa Bonny from Ad Infinitum, Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy, Otep Shamaya from Otep, heck, even Morgan Lander from Kitty - all of whom have amazing clean vocals [excepting Yukina, who mostly raps] on top of their depths-of-hell harsh vocals), so Mayu's harsh vocals hit a much different (at least to me) sensory receptor that I just can't get enough of. However, in the few years since this performance, her range of harsh vocals has become much more developed (Ama-Te-Ras, Zen, OSKR, Rise are good examples) and she really shines on some of their covers, especially of MUCC and Rottengraffty. She is truly a special talent. All of the players from the original 5 are extraordinary musicians (Hazuki is my personal favorite), but Mayu is quite different from most vocalists you'll find that transition between clean and harsh.
Yeah! To achieve that type of scream though, takes a lot of work and discipline. I’ve been doing it for a year now, and I still get a scratchy throat and cough. Cuz I know I’m doing it wrong, and there are a few times I can get it just right. But the false cord scream, like the emo bands can get, is easier than the low growls. lol. But yeah! She has such a great scream!
All praise Banshee Mayu! This is a little more typical of their original songs, but they are diverse. I’m always amazed how she can keep up her transitions from cleans , growls and screams for a whole concert. That is one talented vocalist, but all of Nemophila are exceptional musicians. ❤️🌸
There's a lot of processing on the vocal here: a little more than I'd prefer really, because Mayu doesn't need it. Her harsh vocals are naturally devastating.
Great reaction 👍 Another band to recommend is Saiseiga. Their vocalist, Regan, has more of a growl than a scream, but she also has a great singing voice and adds in some grit like Mayu.
