    I guess during the excitement of the 'race', you forgot the proper way to get the Kelly Kettle off the fire, which is to grab the bail handle with both hands, keep it horizontal to the ground and lift it off. The way you took it off directly exposed your fingers right into the blast of the sizable fire you had going.
    Another point for the Kettle is you'll never run out of fuel while on a trip into the outback. Unless maybe it's the Sahara desert!

    I guess it is either the heart or the head. I love the KK for kayaking, and for going on dayhikes with my son, but for sheer convenience the gas is the winner. Fortunately, you can have more than one stove!

    During the discussion comparing the weight between the two, I feel an important factor was missed out, the kelly kettle is all in one, but in order to boil the water on the stove, a vessel will be required to hold the water. When the gas runs out using the stove, you have a problem, and gas costs money so it's a continual expense.

    • @alexcarter8807
      @alexcarter8807 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a Trekker coming in the mail and to me, they're two very different stoves for different purposes. I cook everyday on an Iwatani butane stove of the type sold in all Asian stores, and one of the drop-in cans of butane lasts me a week cooking two meals a day on the thing. I absolutely love it. But if TSHTF as they say, I won't be able to buy more butane cans, but I can always get wood etc to run the Kelly on. The Kelly is smokier, but if I use charcoal (which I can make myself) it's stealthier then. The thing is that just being able to make hot water is very important in camping or in survival. Hot drinks, soups, boiling questionable water, etc. Really, which system to have? How about both?

    Which stove has the most black soot to deal with? .... and time to start was not measured. However, I think the Kelly Kettle has its place, especially, if there is a chance you might run out of fuel for the gas stove.

    Good video A tip for Becky put a lid on when boiling and a tip for all camp fire cooking,
    if you smear your pots with fairy liquid on the parts that contact the flames the black will clean off much easier. Try it and you will do it all the time.

    nice little race...should have started hers when you started your fire...to show a true amount of time the kettle takes vs fuel

  • @rockitgamer
    @rockitgamer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1. Start the timer from setup to boil. Not just the time after the fire is lit.
    2. Kelly Kettle surface area vs. the cup is also unbalanced, heat the same volume of water in the same cup!
    3. Breakdown & cleanup count for camp as well.
    The Kelly Kettle is amazing and a great piece of camp kit, but Becky could stop on the trail and have a warm cup'o then get back to work or walking without fuss.
    They make a great duo to compliment each other, just as the two of you do as well!

    • @neologian1783
      @neologian1783 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great points. And by the same standards and self same logic perhaps we include our drive time to and from the local hardware store or outfitter to buy the gas cannisters as well as packing out and disposal of empty cannisters? Gosh maybe we even include total impact of manufacturing and recycling efforts associated with the gas cannisters? (After all, if we are including "all" that goes into readiness and final end points, then lets include "all" that goes into readiness and final end point for gas systems too??) Gas cannisters must be "manufactured" then "obtained" involving huge time and resources...which are merely hidden from us while on our camping trip. In order to be completely fair....these should be considered alongside the simple gathering and disposal of natural fuel resources for the Kelly Kettle if we want a "true" equivalent comparison.......no??
      As for point 2....yes surface area to the same volume of water counts......which merely means design of the system counts and affects overall efficiency....so on that count KK wins hands down correct?
      Truly factor in "everything" you are wanting to factor in and I think maybe KK still wins??

    A true time test is from the start of unpacking to the water being boiled. Of course the gas stove will be quicker. But who will run out of fuel first?! For camping use gas. For survival use the Ghillie Kettle.

    Kelly Kettle 2 mins 45 secs; gas roughly 4 mins 40 secs. However, if you were to start timing from when you open the cinch sacks for set-up, obviously the gas would win. Nevertheless, I have just bought a Kelly Kettle and am looking forward to using it this summer =)

    I do love the Kelly kettle but it is heavier and bulky. If you want to really go lightweight with gas, the BRS3000T will win hands down for weight and size, combined with a titanium cup and a small bottle of gas. That said, I enjoy using both and if at a base camp would use the kelly over a gas stove, on a hike though, gas or fuel stove everytime.

    I have both and I don't like the Kelly Kettle despite it being fast. My primary dislike is the volume of the Kelly when not in use. On mine you cannot use it to transport water when not in use and so for the most part you are carry a lot of space that is doing nothing, on top of that the chimney which runs through the kettle is no use for carrying anything either. It is also and I always have hands covered in soot using the kettle. They are cumbersome to poor from. The advantages are it is light and can burn most things which is especially useful because fuel doesn't need to be carried.

    • @BushwackerMan
      @BushwackerMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      👍👍

    • @GwladYrHaf
      @GwladYrHaf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could always whittle a tapered bung to plug the kettle to double as a transport canteen, as for the space inside the chimney, you can use that to carry tinder, it doesn’t have to be dead space if you think about it. There is a place for both types of burner, as for my preference, I prefer the Kelly as it suits my needs. Maybe I’m just an old school low tech guy.
      But you are right, if someone just uses it out of the box with no dual purpose thinking, it is cumbersome.
      I use a base camp for vehicle journeys and a trekker for backpack.

    The kelly kettle could win with twice the water and a cold start. Also the sound of a gas stove is a bit irritating, the crackle of a fire is peaceful. I used to only bring mine on canoe camping trips because of the bulk, but I've made it my go to kit even for lightweight camping, you can pack all kinds of necessities in and around it. I made a compression plug to replace the cork so that I can carry water stored inside without a drop spilled too.

    In reality Becky won because if you were hiking to a campsite and said "lets race to get water boiling" hers would be boiling first because as a part of getting your water boiling you have to find wood, chop it up, get some kindling and light your fire. Becky only has to hit the switch and her pot is on the fire well you are still "preparing" to get yours started. Becky wins.

    you really turboed the Kelly kettle while you put a very narrow pot on a wide burner gas stove, it was just burning around the pot warming the air not under the pot warming it and the water inside, I don't think that a wider pot (/narrow burner) would win over the Kelly kettle but it would improve the boiling time and reduce your gas consumption as it wont be wasted on warming the surrounding air and I recommend you to change your gas stove-pot set up in that manner for better usage

    Concerning the time it takes to gather the wood, i several times had to waist half a day to find a place where i can buy the right gaz canister. The more it goes the more "official" camping are becoming fully equipped holiday village with kitchen and all, so the harder it get to find canister as the market of hiker is just too small for so many types of canister. So on the gathering point i would call it a draw.

  • @joebarrett9830
    @joebarrett9830 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think this was a fair test. But how do you do it fair when one is lighting twigs and the other is a click of a switch? It can't be at the start of the flames, or you would have lost terribly. But you had a base fire going before the test and kept adding wood, making the fire larger and kept it hotter by blowing into it. If only using the base fire I think you still would have lost. However, you did operate it as you would have normally used it. So, good job on showing the differences. I knew you would have a boil before her anyway. With the heat coming through the middle it has a thinner layer of water to heat all the way around the kettle. Where all of her water in the cup takes longer as it is getting heat from the bottom instead of all the way around like the kettle. Loved the video and nice to see dad and daughter taking some time out in the woods. Great bonding time. Keep up the great dad job. ;)

    At 12:00 I am wondering how you can ever pull this back. Becky has utterly won the argument on the stove and your are really clutching at straws when considering the aesthetics of kelly kettle :P However, there is something about making a fire and watching it burn which you just don't get with gas. As you say, sometimes you take something that is a little bit bulkier, requires more work and weights more but it gives you that joy.

    I have a kelly kettle. It is tedious and you need a perfect tiny fire... which is harder than you think. Harder than making a big fire. It gets filthy with soot also. Maybe I need to keep messing with it but I’m kind of disappointed.

    A bit of wind will slow down the gas stove but will enhance the Kelly.

  • @andrewpatterson4695
    @andrewpatterson4695 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah but downside of the kettle is if you're in a really hot summer day you have had 2 followers not allowed will you've gotta use your gas one so yeah on Hi-Fi dangers you can't use that one so I prefer to guess because it's quick and simple

    If you feel like wine you can grab a bottle from the store, drink it. If you want wine you can brew it ferment it strain it bottle it chill it, drink it. With that said I am in girl outdoors corner except this battle. I love making fire as part of camping it feels rewarding to go threw the whole art and passion of the out doors. But I'm not a threw hiker I'm a base camper. So I feel I'm right and wrong but I'm a car base camper all the way. Bushwacker man wins my vote we would be drinking stela processing wood for a pot of stew.

    Beckie's water would have heated much faster if it had been covered, though the contained and fanned flame of the wood in the kettle would likely still boiled the water first; however, Beckie is right that the butane stove is more convenient, safer, and easier to use and carry. In the end, Beckie gets the blue ribbon. :-)

    Good challenge. That was fun. How about doing some more ? (One thing Bushwacker Man needs to learn is that woman always win.) The bottom line is that they each have their place and it depends what you are doing. For example for an established camp like your base camp that you go to often I would prefer the Kelly Kettle. However if you are on the go, like hiking the PCT then the gas stove would be my choice. Love the completion and the video.

    the boil test was not even close to fair. you had you wood prepped and ready. you pre lite the wood and then started the test. Becky could have her water boiled before you collected your wood. I agree its a nice piece of kit. but head to head the gas wins no doubt

    The Kelly kettle would be faster if you didn’t keep suffocating it. You don’t need to keep stuffing it. It’s better to allow airflow. You shouldn’t have to blow if you don’t suffocate it. And to be fair, you should include the time it takes to make the base fire

    You two need to test folding saws, manufacturer vs. manufacturer. And then folding vs. non-folding saws for cutting wood to build a fire.

    I reckon Becky's got you on the ropes for convenience, effort, speed and I want a cup of tea now. I guess you have a point for being a purist. I'd have both for car camping and the gas for trekking, as Becks said she can always lite a fire when ever she wants and stick the cup on a rock. You need to stop cheating, hahaha .

    If you did it right you would have started at the same time.. So that means from when you first start your fire she should have started here as well.

    If Becky had used a wind break for her stove her boil time would have been quicker by a third because her heat would have been more concentrated.
