I have been suffering from a traumatic experience which causes me to almost often fly in a fit of rage with even the slightest irritation. Through therapy though, I learned to master this. When I am truly upset, I take a deep breath and take myself out of the situation that angers me, when I can. It was not easy at first and it took me 3 years to master it. Sometimes I still fly off the handle but more often than not I remain calm

This message is so powerful and important! As a therapist and combat veteran, I've seen firsthand how critical it is to develop the skills of metacognition and emotional regulation. It's not just about reacting to our emotions but understanding them and making conscious decisions about how we respond. This ability to pause, reflect, and manage emotions is something I work on with my clients every day, especially veterans dealing with trauma and PTSD.
The techniques shared in this video resonate deeply with the work I do, and it's a reminder that emotional regulation is a skill we can all practice and improve. If anyone's interested, I've been creating content to support veterans and anyone struggling with trauma, PTSD, and related issues on my channel, Empowerment Psychology. Keep up the great work-this is the kind of knowledge that truly helps people lead happier lives!

When I made a presentation titled ‘Storytelling and Meaningmaking’ for a conference at Stanford University in 2018, I reflected the previous 20 years of neuroscience, which this presenter doesn’t seem to be aware of! The essence of metacognition has been around for thousands of years. It boils down to suppressing our emotions ISO absolute logic. But neuroscientists like VS Ramachandran have made it clear that emotions have an evolutionary purpose. In a nutshell, they help us to feel what’s important in our lives in terms of those around us and our place on the planet. Daniel Kahneman also did a beautiful job of summarizing these ideas in his book Thinking Fast and Slow. This sort of advice has fostered a zero-sum game where the only way to get by is to beat the other person rather than to work with them in a way that could create a win-win solution. I’m startled that the Templeton foundation can’t do better than this! (I do like his socks, though)

For those of us who tend to intellectualize our emotions instead of letting its energy flow in and out of our system, how do we cultivate discernment for when to lean into the metacognition versus feeling the feelings physiologically and not yet moving into the prefrontal cortex? Emotions could often happen without warning, and it’s a real process we have to flow through and return to homeostasis through perspective, but I also want to make sense of how to learn when it’s beneficial to be with the feelings too.

The field of neuroscience has grown a lot in the past few decades. I read Sapolsky's book "Behave". Took awhile (big book) but it really expanded my understanding of human behavior. At this point I can see how much of our behavior is biochemical. Psychology describes the "effects" while neuroscience explains the "cause". And interestingly, is proving a lot of Buddhist understanding of the human mind was pretty right on. Just couched in words that are hard to understand at first. 😎

🤨Sure, let’s imagine a scenario where Dr. Smith, a psychologist who is a master of metacognition, is explaining the concept to Alex, a psychology student who is eager to learn.
    ---
**Dr. Smith:** "Alex, metacognition is like having a bird's-eye view of your own mind. It’s about being aware of how you think and learning to control it. Let me give you an example. When I was in graduate school, I used to struggle with complex theories. So, I developed a routine to help me master them."
**Alex:** "That sounds interesting! What did you do?"
**Dr. Smith:** "First, I would plan my study sessions. I’d set specific goals, like understanding a particular theory or concept. Then, as I studied, I’d constantly ask myself questions to monitor my understanding. For instance, 'Do I really get this idea?' or 'Can I explain this in my own words?'"
**Alex:** "That makes sense. So, it’s about being actively engaged with the material."
**Dr. Smith:** "Exactly. And after each study session, I’d evaluate my progress. I’d ask myself what I learned, what I still found confusing, and what strategies worked best for me. This reflection helped me adjust my approach for the next session."
**Alex:** "I see. So, it’s a continuous cycle of planning, monitoring, and evaluating."
**Dr. Smith:** "Yes, and over time, this practice becomes second nature. You become more efficient in your learning and better at tackling new challenges. It’s a powerful tool not just for studying, but for any problem-solving situation."
**Alex:** "Thank you, Dr. Smith. I’ll start incorporating these techniques into my own study routine."
**Dr. Smith:** "Great! Remember, it’s all about being mindful of your thinking process and continuously improving it. You’ll see significant benefits as you practice."
    ---
This example shows how an expert in metacognition might guide someone in developing these skills through practical steps and personal experience.

Let me calm down before I go in lol. I googled EI just to make sure my conception was correct, and I see that he *is* touching on a part (a very small part) of EI. His discussion isn't encompassing what it's about at all though and at the end of the snippet he makes it clear his intention is that this part supercede the growth with others part that is the most significant aspect. His partial version is being EI like Vulcans are EI, then you'll get along [with me], he says. That shows his lack of EI and his unwillingness to explore the meaning of his own emotions, and willingness to denounce them in others-- including children. This is the SAME OLD invalidation of others that EI was formulated to help narcissists understand. This, as usual, is the undermining of forward thinking and evolution. You see, evolution requires us to come together in peace and harmony, each of us making room/holding space for the next person's FULL EXPRESSION of themselves. 🙏🏽📿 Can you imaging every person on Earth turning out their purpose 🤯🤯🤯 Evolution requires us to organize ourselves in such a way to make that happen. This invalidation and suppression is hindering that possibility. 🙏🏽📿 Peace and Health

This is 80% common knowledge background info and the one tip it eventually gives you is "if you get mad, count to 30". Why do TH-cam videos now insist on giving excruciatingly long intros and having zero substance in the main act.

GIMMICKS? Try the use of DE=VICES to sloooow our responses, for meta-cognition?
(I have buttons, like SORRY, NO and EASY, and other de-vices. More U More may also help)
Also, the use of abbreviated statements, repeated, such as TRY WAIT (from Hawaii)
    ================================================ TERRIFIC advice TNX MCH

Don't tell others not to have them. That's the opposite of EI. This whole channel is dedicated to undermining progress. You haven't noticed? Emotions are not working against the person having them. They are a truth of the person's experience. Peace and Health

Ok. So sometimes you want to say something logical but your emotions betray you through your intonation and body language. In that case, guess what people will respond to?

While the Quran does not explicitly discuss metacognition as a defined psychological concept, it does promote self-reflection, critical thinking, self-assessment, and cognitive regulation-concepts that are central to metacognition. The Quran encourages believers to be mindful of their thoughts, to reflect on their actions, and to align their cognitive processes with divine guidance. These practices resonate deeply with what is now understood in modern psychology as metacognition. That was almost 1400 years ago from now!
