I was fortunate to have an opportunity to test drive an EV-1. Back in the 1990's when they were at Saturn dealers in Phoenix and Los Angeles, I was in Phoenix for business. I went to a dealer after work, and asked for a test drive. You had to live in the area to qualify for a lease, and when asked I explained that I flew to Phoenix to see the car. They let me take a brief drive, even though I did not qualify to lease it. I was impressed and planned to buy one used when they came off lease. Oh well, we all know how that worked out.🙄
For any that haven't seen it, I also recommend watching "Who Killed the Electric Car," and its sequel "The Revenge of the Electric Car." There also is a great book about the development of the EV-1 "The Car That Could" by Michael Shnayerson. GM allowed Michael to sit in on meetings during design and development of the car to document the process.

Thanks for sharing, I never got a chance to have a ride in an EV1. But, due to that life lesson, the very next time I had the opportunity to take a ride in an EV, I took it! Unfortunately, I had to wait until 2012 until this opportunity came along!

A few EV-1s were donated to schools for students to work on them. I hope that oneday they will be sold to museums instead of being junked

While you were preparing this video about an old GM EV, I was out buying my first EV, a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt.

Congratulations on your purchase! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it a lot. I wonder how much technology from the EV1 and Volt was transferable and used in the development of the Bolt.

@@GreenwayElectric I suspect that as with any developing technology, you start with some good stuff and some mistakes, and if you can keep and improve the good stuff while shedding the bad stuff you will keep winning.
Their previous foray into the EV field must have helped, and explain why of all the big makers, GM seem to be more committed to EVs than most.

GM also sold an S-10 small pickup EV, with what appears to be the same systems used in the EV1. They're just about as rare, but I bet the parts could bring an EV1 back to life (and knowing 90's GM, could probably be relatively easily reverse engineered).

Thanks, that’s a good point. I wonder how many of those S-10’s are still running around. And I wonder why they sold the S-10 but not EV1.

@@GreenwayElectric Questionable motors just recently fixed one up! I think he says there may be as little as 5 left!

Their handling of the EV-1 is why GM will have to work very hard to convince to buy one of their offerings.
