Keep in mind folks. We don't just grow our own food because it's cheaper. We grow it ourselves because it's not toxic to our bodies. And if you've never grown your own, it will amaze you at the taste difference.
For the first time, my 13-year-old high-functioning autistic son is excited about gardening. I had him go out with me and plant our red potato in the 5-gallon grow bags in early January. He wasn't too happy about it. He only checked them with me a few times through their growing season. Well, the day before yesterday I had him come out with me to pull weeds in the grow beds and take a look at the bags. While I was finishing weeding the rest of one of the beds, he shouted to me look, Mom, look and I said what's going on. He said there's a little red potato just sitting on top of the dirt. So I walked over to see, he was so excited and asked if it was ok to pick it. I said sure go ahead you're not going to hurt that thing. He was so gentle with it like he was holding a small chick or kitten. Then he said Mom we gotta get these out of the bags, I told him we'd get them on the weekend because there was a storm blowing in. Well, I have to say from all the months of eye-rolling, sighing, and pouting it took one little red potato to change how he felt about our little garden. He's actually looking forward to helping me this season, AMAZING!
Amen! I am trying my hand at growing out of containers as I am wheelchair-bound ...God is good and has blessed me with the will to try to do things I once thought I couldn't do since I became wheelchair-bound and this year it is gardening...so far every single thing I have tried to find a new way of doing in a wheelchair I have been successful! I am so grateful I found this video and your channel! Many blessings!
You may want to look into straw bale gardening. I only say this because I am an Occupational Therapist and I use this method for my wheelchair bound clients. It allows you to garden from the wheelchair as the bales sit at the correct height so you don’t have to bend over. The problem of poor soils is also corrected by straw bales as you are basically growing on a compost pile. I have had several places where I could not dig and had no soil and this worked well for me. All that Hollis and Nancy teach here would easily transfer over to straw bale gardening. Praying for you!
Hey sweetie, I have to use a rollator, but when my dad passed I got his scooter. It helps me get outside and garden with using containers fixed for my height. And inside my kitchen I use a computer chair with wheels to roll around from sink to stove and my insta pot, slow cooker, and anything else that I use is on the counter so I can reach them. Is your kitchen big enough to use a computer chair?
I really like this family, for the simple reason that they pray over their crop; never seen anyone else prayed after planting food. This has touched my soul.
I used your method 2 years ago and got a whole bunch of potatoes. Then I ignored the buckets for the next year and this spring I have a bucket full of new potatoes! Thank you.

Here in Ohio we’ve started our veggie seeds in my attached garage using grow lights. I’m calling this Round One! I remember my Grandparents proudly telling stories about the “Victory Gardens” they planted during WW 2. I’m almost 69 & I find myself going back to their glorious stories and using much of what they taught me. My Father always brought me Veggie Seeds & small Veggie Plants for my garden while he was alive. He’d throw in a few Flowers but always reminded me to plant Veggies first as we couldn’t eat flowers! I’m praying our garden grows better this year than ever before. In the past it was more of a Hobby than anything else. This year I’m thinking it’s going to be a necessity. God Bless you for sharing with us. Stay safe; ~Su. from Northeast Ohio
It's amazing how the Rona woke up so many. My nephew and I have been struggling to get the garden going. Then the pandemic hit. Suddenly people from all over were looking into gardens. That's awesome
Wow, lots,of teaching here needed. You get almost twice the yield in buckets as you do in the ground. It’s also easier at the end to empty buckets, than pitchfork spuds in the ground. Potatoes will grow in anything such as sand and sawdust, clay, and sand etc, great food source. My moms family were potato, farmers, we planted on the farm with them. Used each eye on the potato, never used whole potatoes to plant, always cut around and through each eye part and planted each eye.
I looked at those also. The Firehouse buckets are a 90 while Lowes are a 70 in thickness. I compared the two with information shown on the bottom of the bucket. The thickness of the plastic is only the difference. Have a great crop
This just really hit the spot today. I needed the blessing of this info, your sweet spirits, and the kind reminder to praise the One from whom all blessings flow - especially in such humanly uncertain times. Thank you! :)

Thank you I just subscribed to your site because I've been wanting to learn how to grow potatoes out of a bucket. But the blessing for me is following people who love our Lord Jesus.
You can also cut-up the seed potatoes for more yield. For example, if a single seed potato has 3 sprouts..cut the potato into 3 sections each with a sprout and plant them. It's actually better to do it that way since the cut stimulates the potato to start growing more aggressively and heal itself.
Ya that's what we use to do as a kid it makes 200 pounds go a lot farther and you reap a lot more and that's what's important thing is is reaping what you sow but on the other hand you got to be careful of the deer seems like they like the red potato tops more than they do the kennebecs or the yellow potatoes I don't know seems like every time there's red potatoes reading down to the ground not so much on the other Potato tops like the kennebecs or the Yukons potatoes but I'm not complaining little deer meat makes potatoes taste a lot better I don't care where you live at
BEST video yet on growing potatoes in 5 gallon buckets! I REALLY appreciate how detailed you are. Newbies needs all of the details. New subscriber here! :)
You all are so sweet. I love watching your videos because not only do I learn new things, but I get the warm fuzzies because ya'll are just sweet and happy. Thanks for being such a positive spot on TH-cam.
Our potato man retired last week. I'm dying! We love potatoes! So, I came across this video n I'm truly thankful that the Lord blessed me! I'll be growing my own. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me and everyone else! Have a great day.
Great teaching video! I always had a big garden as did my parents. When my son went to college he made the comment about he missed having fresh produce out of our garden. The next year when he started college I made several bucket containers of veggies so he could have a small garden on his deck on the second floor where he lived. Potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, and spinach. I took 4 buckets planting pole beans in each. I cut willow poles for the beans to climb tied them in the old traditional tee pee and he had a garden!
Thank you so much for all you and Nancy do. I tried 2 containers and the greenery was their, but no potatoes. I watched your tutorial on growing in containers. I used a 5 gallon bucket. Harvested 5 lbs of nice potatoes. Thank you so much and (smile) Bing-Bing.
Amen 🙏🇨🇦🙏 I was just saying to my husband we should learn how to grow bucket potatoes and then, there you were in my suggestions. We're going to give this a try. Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 and how it'll effect us here in Canada and across the globe. Thank you 🙏
Big box store food safe 5 gal buckets have a lip . Plant top bucket with drain holes. Set it inside second bucket WALLA water catch container. May seem like a waste of growing bucket however if ur limited for space and outdoor water outlet it might beat hauling alot of water. Definately gonna try this. Thanks hollis and nancy for all your instruction videos God Bless you both.
For phosphorus, you can keep your eggshells, bake/barbeque them 'till they're mid-brown, crush them up and set them in vinegar. Once all bubbling action has finished, strain the liquid and store it. Use a tablespoon of it per gallon of water, and there's your (almost) free phosphorous.
These videos are awesome. I can't get enough. Thank you Hollis and Nancy. Not only are these super fun to watch, I'm getting a free degree in agriculture! Keep the vids coming. You two are special.
Started gardening as a retirement hobby this year. I have limited space available so followed your video and grew my first potatoes in two - 7 gallon grow bags. With our recent high temperatures, I went ahead and harvested them at about 90 days and could not be more pleased. They averaged almost 8 lbs. per bag. I will most definitely do more potatoes next year. Thanks for sharing your insights in your videos - keep them coming.
I have always cut my seed potatoes. I make sure they have a couple of eyes on each piece. I never put a whole potato, unless they are small. My dad made us work in a garden when we were kids. I have also raised potatoes from the peelings, but they weren't as big. Appreciate the upload. God bless and stay safe and keep the faith.🙏✌️
I thought the same thing, I have planted potatoes in the garden for years, starting when I was 6 or 7 years old, Never put a whole potato in, always at least cut in half
3:27 I love that you stress food safe plastic, I can't tell you how many people I see growing in the orange HD buckets. 5:55 The flow of water through the soil also serves to oxygenate the soil. As the water goes through it fills the little gaps, then empties them and they fill up with fresh air. If the buckets don't drain this process is hindered and the soil can't breath, which contributes to the root rot (anaerobic bacteria) you're talking about.
Followed your 5 gal bucket potato growing series and grew a large amount of potatoes. I actually used large plastic pots and grew about 5lbs per pot. Thank you so very much for sharing your amazing knowledge. I will be growing more potatoes in pots next year. Alberta, Canada.
I believe this "potatoes in containers" series is the best and most detailed found on TH-cam. It has been my "go-to" while growing our potatoes! Thank you for detail videos and little bits of info shared while teaching your methods.
Love your channel immediately. Your lifestyle is a dream coming true for a lot of viewers like me. And it's so soothing and relaxing to watch these videos during the crisis time we are in right now. Love from Vegas!
Nice to hear that someone cares about the container they grow their edible food. I’ve asked some of the big guys they said they don’t grow enough so they don’t care at them buckets
@@sarahann530 leave people be. If it's not your thing, fine. But there is zero reason to search out an opportunity to be a jerk to people who believe differently than you. This worked so well for me last year that I planted more purple potatoes this year. They are up and growing out the tops of the buckets already. No pests, no diseases, great harvest. Thanks Hollis!
Thank you both so much. This is my first video of yours I have seen and I love it!! Especially at the end where you remind us who makes everything possible on this earth He gifted to us. Praise God and people like you two who share his word and how to use our earth to help ourselves.
They way you go about growing them, and harvesting, really seems a lot more reasonable than the other ways I've seen potatoes grown & harvested! Thanks so much for the video! Be blessed! God is good!
Holy simoleans, these are EXCELLENT tips! Thanks you for sharing, and it's super nice to see some family-in-Christ being unashamed. Happy early Easter! He is Risen!
Okay when you gave the Lord thanks at the end you had me and I subscribed! I am new at gardening and live in Florida. I think it would be wise to try and grow something with everything going on!! I am gonna look for buckets! May the Lord Jesus bless and keep you!!!
Sharee Jacobs We went to a donut shop and they saved buckets for us - 3 different sizes and some with the lids for free and they are much heavier duty than the ones you get at the Home Depot or Lowe’s. We tried those and in the FL sun they just don’t hold up. Just an idea. We also store some hurricane items in them - flashlights, fans, Etc. keeps them clean and dry and organized. God bless.
I am SO happy y’all popped up on my feed! What a blessing you are! Thank you for sharing the wealth of your experience and knowledge. It is much appreciated. SO wonderful to meet and subscribe to a fellow brother and sister in Christ! May God bless you abundantly!
Thank you for this video about planting potatoes in buckets. I just planted three buckets using some compost on the bottom before adding the soil. I just need to raise the buckets off the ground to help with the drainage. I will get some bone meal to add to the buckets. This is my first time on food gardening and I am 65. I have a house full of my daughter and her three teenage children and this is a family activity and a learning experience for all of us .
Last year I watch your video after I had harvested my potatoes. I learned a few things from your videos and applied them to this years planting and I’d say I doubled my potato harvest to around 35 pounds of potatoes this years so Thanks for the tips. 👍
Brand new to your channel. I liked the video because of your simple instructions, but I subscribed because of your prayer! Always enjoy helping fellow Believers, God Bless!
Very helpful, thank you. I appreciate people that share their knowledge with us on TH-cam. With what's going on with the rising cost and scarcity of some foods videos like this and those that make them are such a blessing.
I have a house in the outskirts of town on one acre. I took my old 1974 Sears garden tractor and a plow and tiller and made a 50 x 20 ft vegetable garden a few years ago. I planted onions and garlic around the first two feet of the garden to keep pests out. I thought . I planted a couple of different varieties of Potatoes along with some lettuce , bell peppers, tomatoes and various other things . All was planted in the ground. After months of taking care of my garden it finally got mature enough to enjoy some of the fruits of my labor , NOT. More than 80 % of the potatoes had been eaten by Gophers !!! They even ate the Onions and the Garlic !!!!! After that I gave up. I have poisoned ,trapped and drown these pests but they are so rooted in that I cannot kill them fast enough to get rid of them. Thanks for the video , after watching it I may find some food grade 55 gal drums and cut them in half and use those instead of the 5 gal buckets. At least it should get rid of the gopher problem , don't know about the neighbors though , Lol. Great video , thanks for taking the time to make it.
Ok try this tack a small cat out in the garden with you her little dish out there feeding a little bit do that for a couple weeks and this will teach him to go to the Garden to get something to eat aha gophers now some will not eat them but a few cats will eat just half of it ? I not Quite sure why
I am so grateful for you sharing this information. I was able to use your technique to grow a great amount of Yukon gold potatoes for my family when the pandemic emptied shelves. I’m hoping next year to get back into larger scale gardening! God bless.
Great video. One recommendation to try is to place landscape fabric at the bottom of the inside of the bucket before adding dirt and place your buckets in a shallow 2 inch deep hole in the ground. Then add mulch around the perimeter of the bucket. Mulch will help the surrounding soil retain water and moisture will wick upwards from the soil, regulate the soil temps in the bucket better and the fabric will prevent insects from entering. This would cut down on how frequent and how much water you use.
Thank you for sharing. I've been patiently waiting for new videos ,but I have been watching older ones in the meantime. I just love your channel. Both of you are so articulate , informational, and entertaining. It's a one stop shop. Keep em coming. Stay blessed.✌💚😊

Does growing it in the plastic buckets make it toxic or harmful at all? I’m debating using this method or the wooden potato grow box method

Just seeing this picture has helped me greatly! I have a bunch of plastic buckets with bottoms that have cracks. Well potatoes it is.
Thank you for explaining about food quality buckets
lowes also has food grade buckets. i have a 5 gallon that isn't food grade. i lined it with a turkey roasting bag.
I bet THIS video is getting popular very fast! Thanks for the education. Stay healthy. Stay safe.
Just did 3 buckets with Yukon Gold today! Thanks for sharing.
I love how you simplified the process. I also like that it was ended with a prayer. GOD bless the family.
❤️👍🙏
Were did you got your potatoes to plant?
Thank You!
This was inspiring....a city boy want to learn to live the country way.
Great information, growing your food AND GROWING YOUR FAITH, ALWAYS STAND FOR WHAT YOU BELIEVE
Loved this video-really helpful! My favorite line was "It's not a french fry yet" to their sweet dog.
I believe this "potatoes in containers" series is the best and most detailed found on TH-cam. It has been my "go-to" while growing our potatoes!
Thank you for detail videos and little bits of info shared while teaching your methods.
Wow, thank you!
I first watched your video a month ago. I am happy to say that I am planting 3 buckets worth today, Labor Day 2020. Thanks for all the work you do!
👍
@@HollisNancysHomestead Do you have any advice on trying this method for turmeric and ginger?
Love your channel immediately. Your lifestyle is a dream coming true for a lot of viewers like me. And it's so soothing and relaxing to watch these videos during the crisis time we are in right now. Love from Vegas!
Nice to hear that someone cares about the container they grow their edible food. I’ve asked some of the big guys they said they don’t grow enough so they don’t care at them buckets
I just found this TH-cam channel. May God bless you. I really enjoyed watching my brother and sister in Christ
Thanks for the encouraging words!
@@sarahann530 leave people be. If it's not your thing, fine. But there is zero reason to search out an opportunity to be a jerk to people who believe differently than you.
It is very clear you were not taught manners and are full of anger- a very trashy combo. May want to work on that, your classlessness is showing.
These very nice people are too above you to even reply, notice that? I am speaking up though, I am not as enlightened as they are, being agnostic.
So i can tell ya to shut it.
You should be embarrassed but one has to have an upbringing to know that.
Shoo.
Put some screen material in the bottom of the bucket before you add the dirt. That way as the water is draining out it doesn't steal the soil as well.
Thank you for your wonderful, inform able video. And I thank our Lord for your Christian influence🙏
You to are simply adorable! I love your videos, my husband whom detests gardening has been inspired to help build me what I need! Thank you!

That is awesome! Please tell your husband I said you're welcome 😀😀❤️❤️❤️
Still enjoy watching this. Hollis and Nancy is the go to for growing food.
Welcome to the family 😇

We went to a donut shop and they saved buckets for us - 3 different sizes and some with the lids for free and they are much heavier duty than the ones you get at the Home Depot or Lowe’s. We tried those and in the FL sun they just don’t hold up. Just an idea.
We also store some hurricane items in them - flashlights, fans,
Etc. keeps them clean and dry and organized.
God bless.
RN Angel Thank you so much!
I am SO happy y’all popped up on my feed! What a blessing you are! Thank you for sharing the wealth of your experience and knowledge. It is much appreciated. SO wonderful to meet and subscribe to a fellow brother and sister in Christ! May God bless you abundantly!
me too, cate! can't wait to try this plan! Thank you, Hollis and Nancy! Loved your closing prayer! Grew up asking that blessing !
That is awesome!
Next year I’m going to plant them even sooner in the season and see if that improves the harvest even more.
Planting potatoes for the first time. Thanks for the info.
I’ve been collecting pickle buckets and now I have a reason to use them
Thanks so much
This is awesome
Watching this video again after a year or so and it’s been watched over 4 million times !! Wow , excellent

My potatoes are busting through the dirt, my grandson helped me plant them so I'm sure they'll be particularly good. Thank you for your videos...

Superb video about growing potatoes. I'm inspired! Blessings!
Loved this video ! Learned a lot...hope I can grow them here. Greetings from Puerto Rico...God bless...Be safe !
Container gardening will help. Be sure to build grow tables to lift them up off the ground
Ok try this tack a small cat out in the garden with you her little dish out there feeding a little bit do that for a couple weeks and this will teach him to go to the Garden to get something to eat aha gophers now some will not eat them but a few cats will eat just half of it ? I not Quite sure why
But I always figured that they knew more than I did I just couldn't get them to tell me
Did I miss how often and how much these get watered AFTER planting and before the green shows?
This would cut down on how frequent and how much water you use.
thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing. I've been patiently waiting for new videos ,but I have been watching older ones in the meantime. I just love your channel. Both of you are so articulate , informational, and entertaining. It's a one stop shop. Keep em coming. Stay blessed.✌💚😊

Amazing how popular learning to grow at home is becoming. It is the de-industrialization of the home, food, and schooling. It is an amazing thing to watch. And how relevant the bible passage is in this time continual fear and anxiety.
😊 they're puttin' too much weird stuff in store-bought food...
it's startin' to freak people out
If I knew more people like you I would be closer to Jesus. You are a beautiful family. Thank you for sharing.
Just found your channel and I do not have a garden. I will be trying container gardening for the first time this year. Thank you!
