Landscape Photography - Capturing the Beauty of the Beaches of Esperance

  • The Great Southern Coast has epic cliff lines and magnificent vistas looking out across the Southern Ocean. However, Esperance is also well known for it’s incredible sandy white beaches, some of the whitest in Australia. So I set about finding and capturing some of those beaches.
    Every beach is quite unique, so I need to carefully consider how best to photograph each one. I looked for either leading lines or points of interest that helped focus the viewers eye and helped present what was special about each beach. In some cases, I needed a tripod, in others situations I just hand held the camera used a fast shutter speed to ensure the image was sharp.
    Vibrant colours are a classic trait of most Australian beaches, so I used a polariser to make sure those whites were crisp and the deep blues and aquas were rich.
    In most situations the light was strong and quite harsh. So I didn’t try and slow the shutter down to capture the movement of the waves. Instead I attempted to capture the feeling and characters of each beach. in some images people featured in the photo, which adds a different perspective to the shot. This wasn’t just about nature, people use the beaches so they are part of the story I tried to capture.
    There are also opportunities to shot different, more abstract images of the waves breaking. This required a little trial and error long with a fast shutter.

      Thank you, yes back again and loving it. The opportunity for landscape photography in summer are few and far between. But I have more trips planned hopefully the weather will turn soon. Thank you also for your kind comments, I don't know how much promotion is required, this place sells itself. If you are given the chance, definitely come and visit, it's a unique place. Can I assume you're from Ireland?

      Cheers Ben, it is a stunning location, just a pity that it's more that 8 hours drive, otherwise I get down there more often. There a bit of a learning curve on the Mavic as it's my first drone, but I'm loving flighting it. I'm also a sucker for a pano it the image is right, thanks mate! :)

    Great video. I thik this one is my favorite in terms of the way you have edited it and the pace of the whole thing. Flows nicely and the drone shots really add to the relaxed feel. Maybe it was just because you were in holiday mode :) Also loved that shot on the beach wit the two walkers - nice and soft clouds and warm tones. Another painting in there somewhere.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David, as you know it was a little more of a challenge to edit this together. I'm glad to liked the pace and you're probably right I was on holidays and basically had to look at speaking away during brief opportunities so as not to impact the rest of the family. I love the palette of colours in that last shot as well...I can see a project slowly coming together! :)

      Thanks Brendon, that was one of my favourite shots from the video as well. I don't think I do enough with the tele focal lens, so I might look out opportunities to use it more in the future and compress the scene if appropriate. Thank you Marieta, while it didn't mention it in the video, your right most of the images I took were shot in the middle of the day with harsh light, but it was the only opportunity I had. @Andrew_marr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much Kazunari, I really appreciate your kind feedback. The panos I shared in this video are all crop from a single shot, not stitched together. This is because I have moving subjects in my image (the waves and water). The resolution I get from the D800 gives me plenty of pixels, 36mp so I can crop the image and still get a quality image.

    Excellent Andrew. Beautiful wave images with the tele. Superb landscapes. Why did you choose the 17-35 over the 16-30 zoom? I am in the market for one, and would love your opinion.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Steve, thanks mate. I enjoyed doing the 200mm images, I do more in the future. When I bought the 17-35mm lens I don't think the 16-35mm was available. I'm happy with the 17-35mm, the built quality is great, the 16-35 is lighter but is plastic, however it's also a little cheaper. I also think the image from the 16-35 is sharper at the edges then the same image from the 17-35mm. I know a few photographers that have gone with the 16-35mm and they are very happy with it. Hope that helps! :)

  • @pjculbertson55

    Wow! Awesome images Andrew. How the heck are you shooting pano with waves breaking through the scene? Are you just setting up for Continuous High and holding the button as you move through?

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks mate, the pano images are taken with one shot. I then crop the image. To be honest, I don't even know if it would be possible to capture the waves breaking with a series of images that are then stitched together. About a year ago I did capture a big, wide angle beach image with break waves in the distance, taking about 5-6 shots. It required a fair amount of work in Photoshop with the healing tool to get the waves to line up after the images were stitched together.

    Are you using a handheld gimbal? Or stabilising in post? Thanks for the video.

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, Thanks for you question. Currently I'm using the Canon G7X to capture video footage. Not only can I get reasonable video from a relatively small unit, but it has built in image stabilisation, which is incredibly handy. I find that it's so good that I don't need to stabilise the footage in post. I have contemplated a handheld gimbal but I would have to weigh up the extra weight against improved footage...a constant battle! :)

    Hi Andrew. I am getting into landscape photography specifically beach landscapes as I live on the Gulf of Mexico in FL. Our beaches are beautiful and the sand up here is perfectly white. The one thing I am struggling with a bit is creating interesting compositions as we have no rocks or hills or mountains in this area and our beaches are mostly just flat sand. I have recently been taking some photos using cloud formations as my point of focus and I have been happy with the results. Do you have any suggestions on how to create interesting images and what foreground objects work well with beach photography? Anyone else that has suggestions I would love to hear them!

    Andrew each video beats previous one!
    I am also nikon user, d700 17 35 2.8. Now i am trying to find best filter system, what can you advice, do you use nd filters together with polarized filter also? Please give me advice about system. Have a great day!!

    • @Andrew_marr
      @Andrew_marr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks do much for your kind feedback, I appreciate your comment. I use the Lee Filters system, that's a Lee Filter mount, with Lee Filter filters. While they are expensive they are good quality. Cheap filter systems tend to have colour cast issues and you find yourself having to replace them they fade. Regarding filters I have the 105mm polarizer, the 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 Neutral Density Hard Graduated Filters and the 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 Neutral Density Soft Graduated Filters. Plus I have a Little Stopper (6 stop) filter and the Big Stopper (10 stops) filter. The filter mount has two slots for filters and with the addition of the screw adapter you can also attach the polariser as well. That's a fair bit of gear and if you are just starting you probably don't need all that.
      Yes, I use the filters and polariser in combination and often have more than one attached to the lens at the one time.
      Picking a filter system can be hard particularly if you are just starting off. you can get away with screw-on filters that are cheaper but they can get a little fiddly.
      To work out what you need depends on the type of landscapes you want (or will be) capturing. If you don't go with screw filters, you'll need to get a mount system first and out of all the filters I use, the most important is the polarizer. The 105mm polariser have screws onto the front of the mount (if you purchase an adapter). I use the polarizer in most situations, the one I have is specifically designed for landscapes as it has no noticeable vignetting when used with wide angle lens. If you are capturing sunrises or sunsets you may want to invest in some Graduated Filters, these darken down the sky so you can increase the exposure and get more detail out of the foreground. If you are capturing landscapes with a flat horizon (like seascape) then get the hard graduated filters, if your horizon is uneven (like mountains or trees) it'll be better to get soft graduated filters. I mostly use the 0.6 filter out of the ones I have. You'd only purchase the little and big stoppers if you are shooting during the day and want to slow the shutter down.
      So, definitely get a circular polariser, and then a 0.6 ND grad (soft or hard) and go from there. Hope that helps, sorry my response was a little long! :)

    Andrew, are those shots of waves panos that you stitched together? if so how'd you get the wave in its entirety even with the fast shutter speeds?

      Hi Emma, the panos were not created with a series of shots stitched together, I created the image with one shot and cropped it to a 3:1 ratio. I choose that crop format because I felt it suited the image best. Given how fast the waves were moving, I don't think it would be possible to capture this as a series of shots. Thanks for your question.

      Thanks Emma, the fantastic resolution of the D800 sensor (36mp) gives me the freedom to crop the image dramatically and still retain the large quality image.

    Hi Andrew - Do you make your own borders for your photographs or have you purchased a template? Great work as always.

      Hi Brain, no template, I make my own borders for the images in the video. I like to keep things fairly simple. After I edit the image in Lightroom, I take the image into Photoshop resize the image to the desired size and copy the background layer. On the bottom of the two layers I increase the canvas size by 100 pixels width and Height, this effective adds a 50 pixel border all the way around. To the top layer, I add a shadow effect at the default setting but change the angle to about 130 degrees. Hope that helps mate!

    I quite like your videos, but have to admit that the subject is getting quite boring by now. With the exception of one video including the Perth skyline and the odd waterfall, it's long exposures of seascape, after seascape, after seascape, beach, after beach, after beach ...
    I know for a fact that there are much more interesting areas in Western Australia, including the Pinnacles, Kimberley, Wave Rock, the Stirling Range, Kalbarri ...

      I'm sorry to hear that you're finding the content in the videos a little repetitive. I take your point and I appreciate you sharing your feedback. I'm conscious of the fact that seascapes and beaches feature frequently in the videos I share and I try and find opportunities to share footage of different locations. In my previous video I travelled through Hyden where Wave Rock is located but I struggled to find a landscape image worth capturing, however I did share the footage I took. The second video I share on my channel was about the Stirling Range...I hope to go back there again this year. I'm planning to share a strip to the Pinnacles this year. The Kimberley and Pilbara are regions I'd love to shoot but despite the fact they are in WA, they are places that require a lot of planning, timing and effort. Travels and accomodation to these area is significant to say the least. When I worked out what was involved, sadly it would be much cheaper and far easier to travel overseas to say New Zealand than it would to the North of the state. I'm not saying I'm ruling it out, but perhaps if my channel continues to grow over the next few years, I consider how I can make this happen. Thanks again for your comment! :)
