Playing Pauper: Sultai Land Destruction

- If you've followed the site and channel for a while you'll know that we used to have a regular Pauper series before Jake retired from Magic content. Now, with Pauper being one of the hot topics in the community, the time felt right to bring it back! So today we're jumping into a Pauper league to play a deck we featuring in an Instant Deck Tech way back in September: Sultai Land Destruction. The basic idea of the deck is simple: we ramp a bit and blow up as many of our opponent's lands as possible before eventually closing things out with [[Mulldrifter]] or [[Dinrova Horror]]. Can land destruction work in Pauper? Let's find out!
Two quick things before we get to the videos. First, I play Pauper much less than other formats, so bear in mind that we're sort of learning as we go to some extent, especially when it comes to things like matchups and sideboard cards. Second, I'm not sure what's best for the article part of the series, so if you have some ideas for what you'd like to see, make sure to let me know in the comments. Right now I'm shooting for an episode every other week, although it's possible that during busy times it will be more like once a month. Wow Seth's level of salt during the first tron game was at lethal doses.
Seth seems to have a slight bias against Tron in that it doesn't seem to be his favorite archetype.

I watched some guy on TH-cam named stalven play a mono black Pauper LD deck last week. It's got 16 land destruction spells that cost mostly 3 mana, black card draw, dark ritual, chittering rats and gurmag angler.
Idk his win/loss but it was absolutely incredible. Like, popping a land EVERY SINGLE TURN is so brutal.

Just making a note to say: I love the quick run downs at the beginning of these videos. Often times, I just want to get a quick look at the cards and get into the game, and the speed at which you do them is perfect for me.

Yup after some "research/finally subbing to The Professor," I learnt many beautiful things candy wait to Seth just play a deck with 4 brainstorm, 4 ponder, 4 preordain, and 4 opt, just because.

Thanks for the great content as always Seth. Around @51:30 you talk about lack of non-black sweepers, but there is a rarely played red sweeper in pauper, Swirling Sandstorm. That being said I'd never play around it unless I saw it, and you normally only see it in graveyard decks.

"Lose to all Delver, great against non-Delver" is kind of a thing in Pauper unfortunately. Or fortunately depending on your take I guess. It's just a thing you gotta keep in mind, but having a terrible matchup against Delver tends not to make for a good deck. Because you will see it all the time nonstop forever.
But anyway, happy to see Pauper content! Please keep it up! This deck looked neat when you did the deck tech on it and I wasn't suuuper impressed with the performance this time but it definitely wasn't awful and I think it could be tuned into something scary.

I've been making my way through the Playing Pauper backlog the past few weeks; sad that Jake isn't also back. :(
Thank you! If you wanna play something rarer, you can try the classic RDW or a dimir teachings, if you wanna go grindy :) If you let me give you some advise, try to tap lands before bouncelands and always bounce the double lands that give extra life.
Keep it up! Also an interesting sideboard option vs Delver is gutshot, which also happens to be really good vs elves. I would prefer 1 mana ramp over the rocks in the deck though, but with all the tap lands I guess it does justify it by a bit.
Ah, Thermokarst, the perfect way to punish those fancy pants who run their snow lands for flair. ;)
I really like this sultai shell, though the engine of arbor elf and utopia sprawl used in r/g ponza can solve for slower comes into play tapped lands, turn two acid moss will make their day saltier 😀
Delver is so good. I get tired of seeing it so much though. Seems like it will be the dominant deck for the foreseeable future.

This seems like a really good brainstorm deck. I wonder why we're not playing it.
Game 1 of match 2, seems like a different sequencing of lands might have allowed a turn 3 Thermokarst, then repeat a Thermokarst every turn after that until you can mold shambler kicked.? First turn evolving wilds, then drop untapped lands after that.

Force spike
Manasink
W any land destruction strategy but here’s the sweet sauce,.. ready,..

I’m telling you guys it’s frickin sick.
“Fix” there (you can use it on there library!) fix THEIR next few draws..
You can make sure there’s such a slim chance they top deck land.
If they play 33% land you should be able to put them on two turns no land and almost always get one non land on top (even if you hit a 3 land pocket you can shuffle!)
Add to that; chittering rats, memory lapse, funeral charm,..
You can essentially get time walks out of portent (you draw a card too right so it’s even an extra draw) lapse, and chittering rats.
If you know they just drew their one land you can use funeral charm on their draw step (no card advantage here, but, it’s frickin rough)
I’ve only played pauper w friends around the kitchen table but this sure feels like a real deck.
I’m not playing vs anything amazing but I consistently stomp the few decks in my “Meta”

Hey Seth, I prefer this format of deck tech + games all in one video better than the other way where everything is separated. I always end up binge watching all the videos anyway. But I think youtube algorithm must hate stuff like this, right?

Game 2 of match 2, instead of playing signet, maybe play evolving wilds fetching first turn fetching island, next turn play growth chamber bouncing island, then play island turn 3 allowing you to put a land on top of library, setting them back 1 land and a draw?

This deck really needs a second swamp, to be honest. Probably for a growth chamber, since in a format that CAN be super fast at times, the bounce land is by far the least efficient.

As for some deck suggestions: boros monarch, bogles, burn and affinity are all top tiers you can try out. Jake did a bunch of these back in the day but they are all newly updated for todays format

Also for your second match, ghostly flicker should be banned, not tron. Tron is fine but flicker is what pushes it over the top. We have displace (a strictly worser version of ghostly flicker) to replace it and it will still fit in the fam decks as well as still do nuts things with mnemic wall

I feel like this deck is way better if it doesn't even try to grab black mana. Three colour manabases are quite hard in pauper.
What is missing in this Land destruction is Utopia Sprawl, doing LD turn2 is devastating against some decks
i would play some boomerang or eye of nowhere in this list, they can be used to interact and keep tempo in your favor
With Temporal Spring? I'd pick Fatigue.

Claws of Wirewood or Evincar's Justice vs Delver decks?
Land D is great vs pauper burn. They run a really low land count and keeps them off fireblast. They normal only run 4-8 creatures 10 tops

Watching that mono U matchup reminds me why I don't play pauper. I love the concept of the format, but in practice blue is just too powerful.
My biggest hope with pauper gaining popularity is that blue gets some much needed bans.
Any chance we can have 1 pauper related video every 2 weeks or so? Is there a slight chance of getting Jake back for at least one episode? Some pauper brewing stream or an equivalent of goat(pauper) magic?
Hoping to have a Pauper video about every other week. Not sure about Jake coming back, it would be sweet, but I think he's pretty much done with Magic content. A stream is a possibility, but I'm not sure how likely it is at this point. In the past Pauper streams haven't been very popular, but maybe that's changing now.

I think he just got burnt out. He had some health issues, but recovered, so maybe that played a small part, but he felt like he had played pretty much every Pauper deck and just didn't want to keep recording.
Should get him on commander clash again. At least for one episode.

Sinkhole is weird. Since it was never a common on Magic Online it isn't actually legal in Pauper.
