What's on Offa? - Offa's Dyke Path - Part VI, Kington to Knighton

On Saturday 5th June I set off on my journey, catching the train to Chepstow with plans of hiking the Offa's Dyke Path south to north on the year of it's 50th birthday.
This film is the sixth instalment of my journey seeing me leave Llangattock Lingoed and head for Hay-on-Wye, a 15.5 mile day.
My plan was to arrive on the Saturday and just tick off a few miles in the afternoon and then do the rest in a further 10 days. You will find out how I got on if you watch the films.
All I will tell you is that I had amazing weather throughout and it is blooming hilly.

We did this section in the opposite direction way back in 2003. I remember the center in Knighton. Shame you couldn't go in, but the doorway, at least, looked familiar. And indeed I remember the great views ahead of us as we headed down to Kington late in the afternoon, sideways rays of sunshine, and sheep gathering around and following us for some reason. Perhaps they enjoyed our American accents. :)

Yes, I was a little disappointed the centre was closed but I guess that was going to be inevitable at the time, covid and all that. Stunning day for scenery though that day 👌🏼

Watched the Slate Trail you did and now halfway through Offa’s have found them very interesting and the scenery is amazing, going to do both trails so thanks for making them informative and enjoyable. Having previously walked in Scotland Snowdonia and the Lake District these walks take some organising even more now after Covid, do you mainly use mapping on your phone? Knighton brings back memories whilst visiting I saw a poster Welsh 3000 didn’t know what it was but the following year a small group of us completed it bloody hard going. I am 66 this year but intend to follow in the footsteps of your videos and complete the walk, looking forward to it and thanks for the great videos.

Hi Dave. Thanks for the comment, glad the videos are helpful. The scenery certainly is excellent, particularly if you get decent weather, I was very lucky with that on ODP.
In terms of mapping, I use the A-Z map booklet and the Trailblazer book for planning. The Trailblazer book is very good for planning accommodation along the route and also tells you what amenities are where too.
I used to use a Garmin ETrex 30 GPS device for navigating but prior to the ODP walk I treated myself to a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro watch, I save the day by day routes to that and follow them with it. I do always have the route saved on the OS Maps pp on my phone as back up. I also usually carry the A-Z Map booklet and a compass too just in case.

For some reason mate, your comment on my last day doesn’t show up when I click on it… I can see it in notifications but can’t reply that way. The video comments state there are 4 comments but I can’t see yours on there. Bit odd.
Anyway I have read the comment from notification/email so see you have the C2C sorted for later this year. Best of luck! B&B’s are much easier going, far less weight to carry for one! More costly but can be worth it for the comfier nights sleep, especially if you hit bad weather. Look forward to following your progress. Still plan to do it again someday myself and I think I’ll B&B next time too. Lots of other plans too though of course.
