Life isn't measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.
Welcome to the Pipes Hikes channel, mainly featuring hikes done by me, Anthony Pipes. The majority of my hikes are done in the Peak District, often with my mum.
There's a link in the description of all my videos to a map, on the OS Maps website should you want to try the route out for yourself. You can also find my routes on my Facebook page called Peak District Routes, search on Facebook for @PDRoutes
You can also now follow me on Instagram, search for pipes.hikes and/or on Strava, search for Anthony Pipes.
Videos of my walks are available for all to view, though they were initially meant for mum and I to remember our outings. If you have tuned in I guess you are likely a walker yourself, so hopefully you will enjoy and maybe be inspired to tempt some of the routes.
Happy hiking!

The Dragons Back Walk - Parkhouse Hill, Chrome Hill and High Wheeldon
SUPPORT OUR NATIONAL THREE PEAK CHALLENGE AT www.justgiving/page/headintheclouds
Parking up in Earl Sterndale, I headed the short journey past the now closed Quiet Woman pub and over to Parkhouse Hill, no sooner are you up the short, steep climb than you are down the other side. Then immediately after comes the more drawn out climb up to the top of Chrome Hill. It is the other side where you drop off which i known as the Dragons Back due to it's aptly named shape.
After the drop off Chrome Hill and the short steep burst just beyond it, it's a nice gentle stroll around to and through Hollinsclough and then it's off in the direction of High Wheeldon, the biggest climb of the day to end with before the short journey back to the starting location in Earl Sterndale.
Roughly an 8 mile walk through some stunning scenery, without doubt one I will return to again.
As ever, a link to this route is here: explore.osmaps.com/route/3148601/peaks--parkhouse-hill-chrome-hill-and-high-wheeldon
And lastly, I'm in no way paid for my videos, I make them purely for my own memories and hopefully to inspire family, friends and you guys to get out and enjoy our beautiful countryside. I'm no pro but I do enjoy the challenge of putting videos together. Critique is welcomed, criticism is not. If you enjoy my content, why not buy me a drink via www.buymeacoffee.com/PipesHikes :)

A Frozen Kinder Downfall Wander

A trip out in the snow to have a little explore round Kinder Scout in the snow. Starting at Bowden Bridge on the outskirts of Hayfield it was a tough trudge up in the snowy conditions. Snowy, with a chilly wind but clear skies and sunshine made for a stunning day. Kinder downfall all frozen up was quite a spectacle. A trip to the Ladybower area, parking at Fairholmes Car Park which is just a couple of minutes walk from the mightily impressive Derwent Dam. A spectacular sight and sound when it is overflowing, which it was on this January day. From the dam, I headed up Hollin Clough and in the direction of Lost Lad, a peak that offers great views. A short walk then on to Back Tor, the highest point of the wa...

Todays walk started and ended at the Monsal Head Car Park. Great views from the little picnic spot at the car park itself. Then it was a short walk to Monsal Head itself. I chose to take on this walk anti-clockwise so it placed me in Bakewell for lunchtime. So from Monsal Head, I headed down to Monsal Weir and subsequently through Monsal Dale, a pretty little start to the walk. A steep incline ...

I then headed in the direction of Litton before returning to the dales with Cressbrook Dale, Water-cum-Jolly Dal...

The third mountain loop in my Scotland adventure and actually my second of the day. I'd also say probably my favourite of the four mountain loops I took on, a lot of this goes down to the panoramic views off Stob Dearg. I parked up in one of the free lay-bys off the A82 and walked roughly half a mile along it (to the next lay-by) to get the road section out the way at the start. From there it w...

An early set off today with the hop of being relatively high up for the sunrise. The challenge wasn't to get to the summit for sunrise as I had no plans to walk the CMD arete in darkness but if I could get close to Carn Mor Dearg for first light then all was good. And so I set off from the north face car park at 02:30 in the morning, knowing sunrise was around 04:30. It all seemed to work out p...

At 8.28 on your video before decending down on your right, there is the farm made tea rooms for refreshments, not open every day and usually closed around 15.30...
Ah I didn’t realise that. There were no signs out though so wonder if it may have been closed that day. Thanks for the info though 👍🏼
Wonderful scenes here
Cheers Dave. Hope you’re well mate.
@@pipes-hikes I’m ok mate, you doing a walk this summer?
Somehow missed you posting this, Anthony. Good little walk! Hope the arthritis clears up and you feel better and your plans come to fruition this summer. I'm hoping to do the Cumbria Way next summer (going north to south) so fingers crossed I'll get it booked soon. Take care.
Thanks Dan. I’ve had to put the Cumbria away on hold as too busy with work and have plenty of other plans. Arthritis still lingering but seems to have eased a little for now 🤞🏼
Awesome 🤩
Full vid coming soon
We just finished our WHW journey yesterday in eight days. Amazing that you did from near Bridge of Orchy to Glen Nevis in one go. That's insane to me. Well done... I hit my limit at about 15 miles.
thanks for fantastic scenery. topography and geography of great britain is very special...
Great to see u out and about again. Hope the arthritis does one and you get to fully enjoy your summer plans
Yes I’m hoping so. Thanks for the comment 👍🏼
another great video mate nice to see ya out again.
Thank you Andrew 👍🏼
Cracking walk...a Peak district classic
Yeah it sure is. I've been several times and it never fails to impress.
I really enjoyed this video and I will be checking out more of your content in the future. thanks for the informative video ! :)
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it. It's a beautiful area to walk in.
Lovely to see this. We did it in 2023 but the other way round. We ascended High Wheeldon the same side as yourself but descended on the Western side , which turned out to be ridiculously steep and required semi sliding down a section near the base as my 6 feet 2 inch height produces too high a centre of gravity to do otherwise. It was pretty hard on the knees! Great walk though, and fantastic views. I love the contrast between the landscapes of the White Peak and the Dark Peak. I wonder if Wolfscote Hill is accessible now? I thought the views from that were particularly beautiful and wouldn’t mind a revisit - Wolfscote Dale is one of my favourite dales!
I did this walk in 2019 (same way round as this time) and I climbed up the western side that time so trust me, I know just how steep it is 🤣It about broke me... hence me going around it this time haha. But yes I agree, the views are awesome. Not sure on Wolfscote Hill I'm afraid, I think I read it was still shut until a path is sorted but not 100% on that. I don't think I've ever actually been to that trig. I have been through Wolfscote Dale but not for a good few years so I too am probably due a revisit.
It's a very beautiful places
Sir are you doing another long walk this summer
Hello there. Yes I have a few plans here and there. Possibly the Cumbria Way but that’s not certain yet. I’m doing the National Three Peak Challenge late summer with some friends so will attempt to record that and then been asked to join a group walking Hadrians Wall so that will likely be filmed too.
@@pipes-hikes excellent sir
The journey began at Bowden Bridge in Hayfield, facing snowy weather and chilly winds, but the clear skies and sunshine made for a stunning day. Have a fantastic day🎉 💖TFS
Nice sound.
What kind of walking stick do you recommend
What a nice intro music... it blew me of my chair
Amazing! I assume you climbed in May? I'm surprised that it's just you in the CMD route at that hour.. Do you think it's feasible for a first time on Ben Nevis? and especially when not lots of people around?
Hi Sarra, it was 17th June last year. I saw nobody else on the CMD arête. If you are confident in navigating, have done plenty of hill/mountain walks and don’t have a fear of heights/ridge walking, then no reason why you couldn’t undertake it in my opinion. Certainly more peaceful than the tourist path will be. Obviously I have no idea of your experience in the mountains. I had great weather in the week I was in Scotland, it’s not all that often that the weather is that kind up there, more often than not there is cloud and wind (or worse) to contend with. Plan wisely x
What a fantastic film of your WHW journey. Absolutely brilliant photography, filming and commentary, I really enjoyed your film it was so clear the filming was stunning. Well done on your mileage per day, it’s double what I can do. I will be walking the WHW solo and camping towards the end of May this year 2024, my first long distance hike, you’re film certainly helped me with my planning and research, thank you, well done and all the best, take care. 🍻👍👍👍
Thank you for the comment. I’m no pro, but do enjoy making the films so always pleasing to receive positive feedback. Best of luck with the trail. It can be tough if you’re carrying all your kit so keep the pack as light as possible and take plenty of rest stops to give your shoulders a break. Hope you enjoy it, there’s some great scenery along the way, certainly in the second half of it ⛰️
How are you navigating the paths, do you use a gps ?
I used to use a GPS device but now have a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro watch on which you can add maps (using a GPX file just like a GPS does). So I plot the route on OS Maps, then export the GPX file from their app, to the Garmin Explore app, which then syncs it to my watch. I do always carry a map and compass too just in case the watch fails though it hasn’t yet.
Ok thanks for the advice
These are the best ODP videos i think I've seen so far, Thank you and may you continue.
Very kind of you to say so. I’m no pro but enjoy making them and just try to include what I like to see myself. Thanks for the comment 👍🏼
Like the content, detail as well as the filming. You've shown parts that I haven't seen in others.
Without doubt my favourite LDW, completed it 8 times until my knees gave out in 2016, still love walking my dog on shorter less taxing trips but have such great memories of walking with some fantastic family and friends. loved everything about your video and your enthusiasm for the countryside, so pleased you enjoyed the North York Moors. my back yard, I will seek out more of your trips, Have you tried the Dales Way? Thanks for the best 1.30 minutes of viewing i've had for a while.
Apologies, I somehow missed this comment when you left it, but thanks and congratulations completing it 8 times, I'm hoping there's more crossings for me too as it hasn't been bettered yet by any other trails I've done. I haven't done the Dales Way yet, my mum has and highly recommends so it will be done by me at some point I'm sure.
Wonderful video. I had to cut my time here short last year due to food poisoning, We're all booked to go back in May albeit b&b's this time taking my partner along with me. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the comment Lee. Sorry you had to cut it short but I guess a great excuse to go back again. Best of luck to you both.
@pipes-hikes lost 2 stone in 4 days and decided to call it a day at glencoe mountain resort. Literally had nothing left. Was poorly for about 4 weeks. Its definitely opened my eyes for ldw and wild camping. Can't wait to get back
@@leeharbord6227 wise decision by the sounds of it. Never nice to have to give up but definitely the sensible option if it gets to that stage.
@pipes-hikes these trails are always here to tackle another day. Always best to use your head.

This is the first of your videos I’ve ever seen and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Many thanks for sharing and good luck with your future adventures. 👍
Thank you for the comment. Much appreciated. Glad you enjoyed it.
Great video and well done for doing it twice, amazing! The only downside was the music, something calming would have been much better.
nice one mate great views/great walk done the walk in all conditions over the years cheers mate.
Thanks Andrew. Yes I’ve been up there in all conditions, usually cloud to be fair but this day was worth the efforts for sure.
Lovely! Very different from when I did part of that route doing my first day on the Pennine Way last June in blazing heat! Fantastic part of the world, and that looks like a great circuit. Also, the drone footage really comes into its own for something like this.
Thanks Tim. The Pennine Way is on the list. It won’t be this year for sure but hopefully not too far down the line. I e been to Kinder Downfall a few times but this was one of the most impressive sights of it I’ve seen.
Brilliant video Anthony, enjoyed watching it.. The downfall looks amazing all frozen up - what a sight! Kinder plateau looks brilliant with all the snow, very scenic. You had a beautiful sunny day too.
Thank you. Was quite a sight that’s for sure. Perfect day for it.
Great video Anthony of a beautiful area.
It's great seeing the Peak District in the winter and what a beautiful day. Definitely good exercise trudging through the snow!
Thanks Dan. Yes I do like seeing the snow capped hills and the weather just made for a perfect day. Thanks for the comment.
Hi Anthony. Wow fantastic views from the top of Kinder you got there, it's a long time since I was up there and me and my old mate Chris went up the opposite way from you, I think I'll have to visit again sometime, thanks for taking us with you, atb Cheers Glenn it's a 👍from me
Thank you Glenn. Yes I’ve been up here a few times but I think this has to go down as one of the most impressive for scenery. Thanks for the comment.
Looks like a great walk. We will have to add it to our list for our next trip to the Peak District. The water at the dam did look really impressive and lots of work seems to have been done for visitors to really appreciate it. Nice drone flight at the end.
It’s one of my favourite areas to visit. The cafe and car park can be crazy busy in the summer and when the dam is overflowing, which only happens after heavy rains, but is quite a sight and sound to experience. That’s the most I think I’ve seen coming over it. Derwent Edge is one of my favourite Peak edges to walk with some great views down the valley. Though all the edges are pretty impressive as I imagine you will know having seen your recent upload 👍🏼
Oh dear 48:32 oh well, that’s karma for you😂
Not been up there for many many years. The last time I was up there was when I stayed at hag farm with sconce Hills school don’t know if it’s still going or what
Yeah I went to Hagg Farm a couple of times while at Sconnies. It is still there and still running as an educational activity centre 👍🏼
Another great series of videos, you were so lucky with the weather! Thank you for sharing.
Many thanks for the comment. I certainly was lucky there yes.
Great series of videos - thank you. I've watched these in preparation for doing the walk myself this coming summer. Gives a great idea of what the walk will be like. One question - you clearly did this in some kind of trail shoes rather than walking boots. Is that what you would recommend for the Offa's Dyke Path? (Obviously you had fairly decent weather by the looks of it for most of the way and not too much mud to contend with). I'm hoping to do the walk in June, same as yourself.
Hi Tim and thanks so much for the comment, I’m glad you found the vids helpful. The footwear I used were Hoka’s, they had high sides like a boot, but were designed more like a trail shoe. So much so that I could actually run in them, but they were ever so comfy. Unfortunately despite being so comfy, they didn’t last as long as I would have hoped, falling to bits a year later while walking the Coast to Coast. It does all depend on the weather in the run up and forecast for your travels but I don’t remember anywhere being overly rocky, certainly to the extent where you need the ankle support. It’s very much each to one’s own but for this trail, I would happily wear trail shoes for the added comfort if it wasn’t forecast to be wet. Historically I’ve always been a boot advocate but since trying the trail shoe, I do find them a lot more comfortable for doing long distance trails. Best of luck with the trail. It really is a beautiful one, particularly if you get the weather, I really was lucky there. It’s tough but one of the best I’ve done.
Many thanks for taking so much time and care to answer my question, Anthony - much appreciated. I might well try out some trail shoes as part of my preparation, then look at the medium-term forecast, as you say, before I set off. I'm really looking forward to the ODP - your videos have certainly whetted the appetite. I'm probably going to camp, so I'll be carrying quite a large pack. It's a bit of a follow-up to doing the Pennine Way last June, which was also tough but very enjoyable (and a bit further than the ODP). Like you, I posted videos of my journey on TH-cam mainly as a reminder for myself. They're nowhere near as good as yours - mainly they're just a stitch together of the photographs I took along the way with a bit of a soundtrack added - but they're a fun memory. 😀 I'll take a look at your Coast to Coast videos as well in a bit. Cheers. Tim
@@timdoggart6787 ooh I’ll check them out. The Pennine Way is on the to-do list… at some point. Won’t be this year, I think that’s going to be the Cumbria Way but hopefully not too far down the line. Like you say, it’s a long one, so it’s finding the three weeks to fit it in.
Absolutely marvelous views
New to tour channel. Absolutely love it 👌 Do you ever guide, let someone tag along with you? I love hiking but don’t map read and am on my own. If you do am happy to pay you something but be totally responsible for myself etc… would just be great to get out to places I otherwise couldn’t. I understand you video, drone etc and am happy for you to do this. I would keep out you way just be following behind 😂 Naomi😊
I liked the accompanying music you've chosen very atmospheric, good video
Great videos. Would be nice if you could tell us which rivers or streams you are filming. Thanks
The woods at the beginning where he puts one foot in Shropshire and one in Powys, is literally a 2 minute walk from my house, I take my dogs along this route regularly. I've only made it up to the top of Panpwnton Hill, where the first bench is with the view of Knighton and that was a killer climb (given I'm no spring chicken), with my dog, but great to see how to get on the rest of it, as it's not always clear. There is also Glyndwr's Way in Knighton which y is a 135 mile (217 Km) long National Trail through that takes you to some of the finest landscape features in Mid Wales including the tranquil Radnorshire Hills, the shores of the Clywedog Reservoir near Llanidloes and heather clad Pumlumon, which is the highest peak in the Cambrian Mountains. Great video.
Hi Anne, many thanks for the comment. Your home area is certainly very pretty, I’m very jealous. Some beautiful but yes, pretty tough terrain. I have heard of Glyndwr’s Way, certainly one that is on the ever growing list. There’s just too many to tackle and I only have limited time unfortunately haha. Hopefully one day though 🤞🏼
@@pipes-hikes Well I loved your video! We get so many visitors to Knighton doing this walk all year round so I need to explore the area more! Certainly a beautiful part of the country. I shared this to our Knighton group by the way. Glyndwyr's Way I think merges at some point with the Offas Dyke trail. It's a nice walk through the woods through Knighton and also at the top of a steep hill! Keep on trekking!
I did Wainwrights last summer. I wonder what hike you can suggest come close to that if I go back to Britain?
Enjoyed your video! Planning to do the C2C next year. Which luggage moving service did you use and would you recommend them? Thanks!
Thanks Jim, I hope you enjoy the walk. I used Sherpa, who I believe I heard somewhere have now joined forces with Packhorse. Generally speaking, no complaints, other than them being a little late with the drop off when I stayed at St Giles Farm just beyond Richmond. I would use them again though 👍🏼
@@pipes-hikes Thanks for the info! very helpful. They were both on my shortlist. Good to have a review though!
Are yuo their mate
Thank you, Anthony, for this wonderful video, and thank you for taking mostly the high routes. Splendid views, and beautiful details of the nature. I loved especially the drone sections. You got a new subscriber from the snowy Finland.
Thank you Paula, that’s very kind of you to say. I try to get more scenery and nature in the film than myself if I can. Much appreciate the comment and the sub. We’ve had a bit of snow here too recently, nothing compared to what you get though I’m sure!
Very nice! Lovely to see some out of season views too
Do it the other way round next time. I started from Robin Hoods Bay 40 odd years ago. Much better finishing with the Lakes.
I am tempted by that, I’ve heard a few people say that it’s better that way, and I do love the idea of finishing with the Lakes so could be done…👍🏼
