    Olivia smashed Final question but Janine was the more well rounded competitor tough call....
    This competition is a great example of how different perceptions, beauty standards and small differences can effect the placement of very deserving competitors. Sometimes it comes down to one persons personal preference that determines the outcome but this also shows that regardless of placement a Queen can stand the test of time and leave a mark on the would without having been awarded the top title.

      Q: "What is something that you have done that you will never do again?"
      A: "First I’d like to start off by saying that every experience, no matter what it is, good or bad, you’ll learn from it. That’s just life, but something I’ve done that I’ve probably regretted would be picking on my siblings growing up because you appreciate them so much more when you’re older, you get closer with your family. Everybody fights with their siblings, right?! But I don’t regret it."
      I agree that the presentation of her answer was very calm, chill, and relatable..but the only thing that didn't make sense to me was the final line of her answer, "But I don't regret it." If she just ended her answer with, "Everybody fights with their siblings, right?!" it would have been better and not contradict her earlier line, "but something I've done that I've probably regretted.."
      Olivia is one of the prettiest Miss Universes we've ever had, but Janine was the clear winner that night. Period.

      It was Trump Era and it was obvious that Trump wanted an air brushed, polished queen and he found it from Olivia. But hey, it was 1 Decade ago and it has been written in the world of Pageantry. So let this issue rest coz both queen have their successful careers now. Janine made Filipinos proud, that matters the most.

      @@mariank425 if u saw the original live telecast you would know some part were removed when the 2012 MU was uploaded in youtube.
      1. was the start of janine's finals gown competition where she did something with the gown and if I remember right the commentator said something like a "ballerina twirl"
      2. After announcement of the winner the camera focused on Trump and the woman with him. The woman was clearly angry and shouting to Trump cause of the final Result
      This 2 were removed in the full MU 2012 youtube.
      I liked Olivia, she is beautiful and her answer is amazing if not for the last contradicting line. But the thing is she didn't deserve to enter top 5. Many beat her in the swimsuit and gown segment, so why even bother to argue about qna when she shouldn't have reached that part. Her walk was awful.
      I am from the Philippines and I accept defeat when there is a better candidate, but 2012 for me was clearly for the Philippines.

    -- I did not watch the show nor did I follow the MU2012 pageant. However, everyone was talking about Miss Philippine being robbed.
    --After watching the show I must say I liked Venezuela much better, until she decided to answer in "Spanglish (or whatever the hell that was) and it came down to the USA and the Philippines.
    -- Olivia has a beautiful face and, I think a better final answer, however, anything else goes to the lady from the Philippines. She should had won.

    Janine said so herself during an interview. It doesnt matter if you performed better or have given a better answer, it all boils down to the judges. If you did everything right but the judges still think that your not the one then you will not get the crown. Since judging is personal, so they will jusge based on their liking, and at that time they liked Olivia more than they did Janine. So she took home the crown.

So the candidates really need to plant in their minds that studying Judges' personality type preference , having American vibe, Magnetic and catchable charisma, Physical and stamina conditioning, knowledgeable and very conversational to every person, and styling and most of all proper ethics and styling is VERY A MUST TO TRAINED! DON'T JUST GO THERE AND FIGHT FOR THE TOP 5 SPOT! BE YOUR MOST TO THE MOST OUT OF WHAT I MENTIONED! It's too hard really, but this is very helpful to you.

And this made sense to me somehow, given that Venezuela has just scored the only back2back win in MU just 3 years before Irene (in 2008-2009), the likelihood of another B2B win by Venezuela in 2012-2013 would be very low. BUT after all these years, one thing I realized was we should not put the blame against Olivia Culpo. She performed. The judges liked her. The organization, probably oriented the judges to choose a specific personality for Miss Universe and that's Olivia. I still remember watching Irene's performance during the evening gown & swimsuit rounds. Irene was by far the strongest. She gave far better performances than Mexico, Brazil, France & Australia. After the Top 5 got called, I presumed Irene was ready to claim the title. Even the questions she received during the final Q&A round were the easiest. Plus, many of those contestants in 2012 could still participate today & win during the IMG era. That year had a lot of tough competition. Brazil, Hungary, France, Spain, South Africa & Venezuela were exceptionally well-prepared to take on Olivia & Janine during the finals.

    2012 was THAT year indeed. At the time I thought it was the most confusing win in Miss Universe history. Over the years, I came to realize why the judges decided how they did. While I never saw it through the lens of the Trump v IMG era, I think The Sovereign's analysis makes total sense.
    Olivia won because she appealed to what the judges were looking for. I initially thought it was only because they found her more beautiful than Janine. While that may still be the case, it was her overall performance and package as a contestant that earned her the crown. With that said, I believe had Venezuela not completely bombed her final question, it probably would have been her wearing the Diamond Nexus crown at the end as she exuded the same Trump-esque Miss Universe quality that was favoured at that time. Venezuela knocked herself out the competition with that unacceptable answer so it became a choice between Janine and Olivia and the scale tipped in favour of Olivia.
    Today, I really don't mind that Olivia is our Miss Universe 2012. She is a true stunner in every sense who has gone on to become a prominent social media personality, looking more and more beautiful with every post.
    The thing about Miss Universe in any case is that most of the contestants in a given year can wear the crown and wear it well. It's really a matter of luck, timing and destiny that determines who walks away with the title. The stars aligned for Olivia, but Janine will always be the quintessential queen for us pageant fans.

      Olivia Won because Venezuela messed up answering in English, language that she didn’t clearly dominate.

    During that time I really thought Venezuela would won, because she really performed well from Swimsuit to Evening Gown and she was the most trending candidate because of her beauty, but her Q and A hurt her to get the crown that's why she placed 2nd RU, PH was 1st RU and the winner was USA.

    I really thought it boiled down to the Q and A, and there it was clearly based on the preference of the judges and the Trump era. During that time content of the answer was valued less than relatability and sassiness. I agree with on your take on their answers and that's how Olivia won.
    I think for us Filipinos, it was really stingy cause during that time we've been placing for three consecutive years and finally have a contestant who gave an arguably flawless performance and yet, didn't win.

    • @PungiFungi
      @PungiFungi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is not Miss Earth. It is rather telling that Filipino fans are big fans of MU and yet do not know how the competition works. A good answer to the final question helps… But oftentimes one contestant stood out and the judges made their decision already and it is only to determine who is first runner up.

I'm not taking it against her but more like the Judges. But now I totally understand. Even if you are to compare Queens from Trump Era vs 2015 onwards, then there really are huge differences.

    I think one reason why everyone watched Miss Universe 2012 is because it was held in a holiday. Everyone, from students - adults watched it because it was literally a free day, compare from the past 2 years. It's still vivid in my mind how heartbroken everyone was, including me, when Philippines lost. We would hilariously watch the replay thinking the result might change 🤣

    Irene Esser of Venezuela overpowered both Olivia and Janine by mileees! She was super consistent. That Crown was Venezuela’s until she clearly messed up with her final answer, ending up in 2nd runner up position.
    BYW… I preferred Janine better than Olivia Culpo.

  • @VivekSharma-vj9qy
    @VivekSharma-vj9qy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Sometimes it's always happened that the best answers queen can't get the crown and placed as runner up ....in miss universe 1995 india gave the best answer but she placed as 1st runner up...same with 2020 when Peru gave the best answer but she can't win ....while same goes with philippines in 2012 while venezuela gave very weak answer but even she placed as 2nd runner up

    • @hisdarksecret
      @hisdarksecret 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Irene Esser is the one expected to win in 2012. See why she placed 2nd runner-up even with a terrible answer? It's because she excelled in all parts of the competition. She just messed up the Q&A. Her score was too high from swimsuit and evening gown and that made her place higher in the Top 5.
      We wouldn't be having this debate for over a decade with Olivia and Janine if only Irene answered well and in Spanish.

    • @PungiFungi
      @PungiFungi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hisdarksecret I suspect Irene still got a couple of #1 and #2 rankings despite bombing her Q&A. Some judges appreciated her effort or were not deterred by her snafu. It may even be the #1 votes were split between Olivia, Janine and Irene and Olivia won by having the most #2 rankings.

    Finally, with your in-depth insight, knowledge, and expertise on the world of pageantry specifically, the Miss Universe pageant, this issue is put to rest. The Trump era Miss Universe which businessman Donald Trump mostly favored were the Latina beauties with a back-to-back win from Venezuela, he was not more into Asians. Here's the list of winners from 1996 to 2014~
    2014Paulina Vega Dieppa (Colombia)
    2013Gabriela Isler (Venezuela)
    2012 Olivia Culpo (USA)
    2011Leila Lopes (Angola)
    2010Ximena Navarrete (Mexico)
    2009Stefanía Fernández (Venezuela)
    2008 Dayana Mendoza (Venezuela)
    2007Riyo Mori (Japan)
    2006Zuleyka Riviera Mendoza (Puerto Rico)
    2005Natalie Glebova (Canada)
    2004Jennifer Hawkins (Australia)
    2003Amelia Vega Polanco (Dominican Republic)
    2002Justine Pasek (Panama)
    2002Oksana Fyodorova (Russia)
    2001Denise M. Quiñones (Puerto Rico)
    2000Lara Dutta (India)
    1999Mpule Kwelagobe (Botswana)
    1998Wendy Fitzwilliam (Trinidad & Tobago)
    1997Brook Lee (USA)
    1996Alicia Machado (Venezuela)
    Always remember that the first most controversial winner of the IMG era Miss Universe 2015 was from the Philippines 🇵🇭 in the person of Pia Wurtzbach followed by Catriona Gray in 2018.

    I love your analysis! Very on point. I just have a question because this also baffles me. How about the mid to late 1990s when the winners were Brooke Lee, Wendy Fitzwilliam, Mpule Kwelagobe and Lara Dutta? That time Trump was already the owner of Miss Universe. Do you think Janine fits that "Trump standard" if Miss Universe? Or Is it the standard of the pageantry era (the 90's era)? Can you say Trump has changed his Miss universe standard over the years? Sorry for the many questions. Hehehe Thanks.
