Chip making requires three critical components. Ultra refined materials, Chip design, Precision machines for foundry. China has refined materials and can get more if they want. Chip design comes from solely US and its companies like AMD, Intel etc. And S Korea, Taiwan get the machines from Netherlands, only maker of precision instruments. So, with a single 'export control' sanction, the US has cut off any and all potential rivals, specially, China to gain control over chip market.

Korea and Japan are huge economies. K-Pop has been only recently been popularized but anime has been popular for decades. The reason is that Japan became an economic powerhouse before Korea, so Japan's soft power (anime) dominated before Korea's Kpop.

We Indians need a long time to catch up on technology. Sure, we can innovate, but so can the west. Tell me one major area of technology where India has beaten the west. I'll wait. To give you an idea of how far ahead the west is, China was unable to manufacture the tip of a ball point pen until 2017. They did not have the tech, they were importing it from the west. China is industrialised. India is not even industrialised and you think we can make 5 nanometer computer chips without outside help. What a joke. To make a computer chip, you need lithography machines, which only American allies can make, the tools to maintain those machines are made in America, the designing and intellectual property for those chips is American. Are we going to do all this on our own? How? All our best graduates move to America and do this work for them. We can barely even compete with Bangladesh on making textiles.

Hi Abhijit, I am in silicon valley and involved with semicon. I am so disappointed with Modi government and also with all so called Indian tech companies and tycoons that semiconductor/ displays manufacturing in India are not on their top priority. Indian outsourcing giants like Infosys, Cognizants, TCS never diversified in anything and happy just with 3-4 decades old business model despite garnering humongous surplus capital. It's pretty narrow vision compared to when I look at American entrepreneurs, tech companies or even political establishment. Worst thing that most of tech firms top executives and engineers are Indians but these companies manufacture in countries like Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, now Vietnam. Indians are all gaga these days with Make in India but they should know that India can not manufacture a chip for washing machine, microvave, cellphone. Its very sad. Ashwini Vaishnava is not a competent man. Need someone like Jaishankar or they should find someone like me. Micron (Sanjay Malhotra) Investing $100B in New York state, Intel $100B in Ohio. Nvidia, Intel, ASMAL, Micron, Lam Research, AMAT, AMD, Global Foundry, QUALCOMM, Texas Instruments, Broadcom, Marvel, ASM, ST have no manufacturing footprint in India despite having massive Indian talent pool in it's workforce. Young Parag Agrawal was fired lately by Musk but if this guy has any ego should have created a world-class Indian social media brand even if it has a leftist bias... but what he choose instead is to find an another job of engineer with Facebook. Please share your contact details and we can talk further and hash out a strategy🙏🙏

    1. There is something called rare earth metals. China has only 10% of worlds supply but they refine 70% of worlds Rare earth refining tech. So now after US sanctions, China will impose export quotas on RARE EARTHS. they have been doing it for quite some time now. Now that will intensify
    2. Chinese are essentially writing blank cheques to their homegrown industries. Just recently SMIC acheived a breakthrough in 7nm chips. So yeah this may hurt in short term. But long term, not much
    3. Due to Russian war in Ukraine, US led west stopped giving work visas to Russians. So you know how this will go. Nobody knows this but Russia is a technology powerhouse. They have best scientists. What is stopping china on hiring Russian scientists? Nothing.
    4. Now because of Russia and China determination, we can see huge innovation in Chinese and Russian chip industries.
    My analysis!

The US has taken the extreme step of asking all its nationals working in the semi-conductor industry in china to resign forthwith and return to the US, or risk losing citizenship, obviously to safeguard what it considers its vital interests in its trade war against china. But under similar circumstances, can our country take such steps? The US itself may criticise India for acting in violation international agreements; but the anti-national elements within our country will be most strident in protests against the government of their own country, and may engineer and orchestrate street demonstrations with clandestine support from our enemies from abroad. Our government needs to take these factors into account and devise ways, including bringing in new legislations if required to arm itself for dealing with such protests in future.

It's called leverage. Taiwan was successful in developing their domestic chip manufacturing industry in the 90s but China did not focus on that. China entered late and still struggling to even catch up to Taiwan in chip tech.

Taiwan has an upper hand in semiconductors since a very long time… currently TSMC (1st semiconductor industry in the world) produces 5nm chips in Taiwan only even after setting up plants in various countries like US.. China is no where near 5nm and it’s quite obvious that US and China want to have a hand in the 5nm.
Said that Taiwan is already knows the current situation and would not try to hand over this piece into both US or China.
Status quo is the key to progress I guess 😅
Overall Nukes are clearly easy to get Semiconductors need infrastructure and facilities not so easy

@@harishvarma8066 Well no. America has the strongest military and No.2 largest nuclear arsenal. But they themselves are struggling to make chips.
Chip making is completely different. You need a chemical called "pure water", it is needed to make chips. America doesn't have pure water resources, its incredibly costly. Taiwan has natural abundance of pure water.
