    00:00 Beau Brummell Introduction
When it comes to historic Menswear, few names rank higher than that of George Bryan “Beau” Brummell, English gentleman of leisure, dandy, and menswear influencer. During his time, Brummell was a genuine tastemaker whose views on menswear dictated fashion and whose style would resonate for years to come.
    01:50 Beau Brummell’s Early Years
In keeping with our belief that a gentleman is made by the choices of his life and not the circumstances of his birth, we should note that Beau Brummell was not of aristocratic birth. Thanks to hard work and useful connections the Brummell family enjoyed a solidly middle-class lifestyle.
04:19 The Military and George IV
    05:55 Brummell in London
    08:10 Style Analysis
What he did in the early 19th century still informs the consensus of what good taste looks like in menswear. His clothes represented an understated elegance including a disdain for anything “over the top.” He also established a limited range of appropriate colors and the color theory for combining them effectively through contrast, something we still do when we pair blue and gray or brown and blue.
In later generations, Brummell’s look would evolve into the suit and tie but, more directly, into the sport coat and pants combination, since he preferred not to match his coat with his trousers. The emphasis on neckwear as the ornamental center of attention in a tailored outfit remains with us via the necktie or bow tie. Brummell’s choice of contrasting black and white as he changed from day into evening wear remains the black-tie dress code today. Yet it is perhaps formal morning dress, particularly a morning coat and separate colored trousers with a light-colored vest, that most closely evokes the Regency attire Brummell actually wore.

It’s worth noting that the English middle class was/is considerably higher in social standing and wealth than what the Americans call middle class. The upper class lived/live off inherited wealth, the middle class were/are business owners and the working class actually worked/work for a living (similar to the American middle class)

It’s much more nuanced than that. A business owner who runs a grocery store might be wealthier than a school teacher. Yet, a schoolteacher position in society is usually regarded as more “privileged” than a grocery store owner or manager. A highly skilled electrician or plumber may be making more money than a private music tutor, but a plumber or electrician are in the working class category, whereas a music tutor is definitely not, disregarding his or her financial struggles. Education, the nature of one’s work, among other factors, play a significant role. Income is not the only factor.
It’s also worth noting that today, many members of old aristocratic families in Europe, are not wealthy at all and have to work. Some manage to be employed by top tier companies, while others aren’t as lucky. Their modest financial situation doesn’t exclude them from the upper class though as they still bear their titles, which automatically open many doors into exclusive clubs and societies which will remain forever closed to the nouveau riche.

In the 1995 adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice", Elizabeth Bennett with her aunt and uncle are spending the evening at Pemberly. Elizabeth's uncle is dressed in the older style with breeches. Mr. Darcy is a follower of Brummell as he is in black and wearing trousers.

He was probably the first "common" menswear influencer. Plenty of Kings have influenced fashions before him, most notably Henry VIII and Charles II (England) and Louis XIV (France). I love both the late Rococo and Regency dress. The exuberance of Rococo and refinement of Regency.

It is a bit more complex. Of one fahion trend always follows an opposing trend (back in the days everything slower of course). And after the french revolution and the whole spirit of the time slimming down a bit was sensible. These days functionality and comfort is so important like never before in modern fashion overall (and not only work clothes).

Was in London in May and spent time in Jermyn Street - did the obligatory photos with the Beau Brummell statue. I suspect that many people associate Beau Brummell with lavish, excess and dandy-like behaviours; ironically Brummell helped to put and end to all those things. Good video. Glad you showed his less-than-perfect life, too.

A minor correction. Beau Brummell's debts were estimated to be 30,000-60,000 pounds, not 600,000 pounds. For context, at that time, a middle class family could live on 300 pounds a year. Beau Brummell had wealthy friends who could lend him thousands of pounds, but not hundreds of thousands of pounds.

I think Beau Brummell is one of those examples of men whose style we can and maybe should follow, but his behaviour less so. He was a dandy before dandyism, and used simplicity to rebel against the status quo in the same way dandies later used embellishment. He was also a gambler who spent infinitely more than he could afford for most of his life, and died in a pretty dire state in Caen. So I’d say follow the style, but maybe not anything else 😅

I have to admit, I'm not as fond of all the changes Beau made to fashion. I'm not as much a subscriber to the idea of understated elegance. At least in my opinion, it's impossible to be well-dressed and plainly-dressed at the same time. Boring (or, minimalism) will never be aesthetically pleasing - it's simply a trend, and it too shall pass. I actually really appreciate how the GG team assembles outfits that balance colors and patterns without going overboard, especially in an age of dreadfully boring outfits with no color or personality.
