what a superb joy listening 2 this - my first time hearing Edward Gardner conduct - absolutely wonderful how the Brahms comes off here - nothing for exaggeration and effect - always the music flows and shines on its own terms
One of the greatest interpretations of this work I've heard. Perfect tempi AND some touches of rubato (I'm thinking 1st mvt) that were just magical. No lugubrious ritardando in that movement's coda. Some phrases, rather than starting or ending with the dominant volume of the overall phrase, rose up organically from that which preceded and closed like a bloom beginning its nightly rest; startling and welcomed insights that I don't think I've ever heard in quite this manner. Often the inner movements are satisfactory, but here, the maestro's "fully breathing Brahms" is nonpareil. Rarely heard with this degree of musicality, the 4th movement's final pages move with utterly no loss of tension. My Jove, what a glorious performance!
