The company, headquartered in Karlsbad near Karlsruhe and other locations in the USA and Hungary, developed and integrated complete infotainment systems worldwide. The range of products ranged from navigation systems, voice control and HMI to audio and entertainment technologies. Harman Becker Automotive Systems has been a supplier for Mercedes-Benz[6][11] since it was founded, but also manufactured for brands such as Audi, Porsche, Peugeot, Hyundai, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, BMW and Mini.[12] Harman Becker had 28 locations worldwide in the following countries: Germany, USA, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Hungary, Canada, Mexico, South Africa (until 2008), Japan, South Korea and China. In 2008, Harman Becker had around 8,000 employees worldwide and annual sales of $2.9 billion.[13] As part of the strategy of the parent company, Harman International, more and more parts of the company have been relocated to low-wage countries since 2008. Therefore, the number of employees at the ten German locations fell from 3800[13][14] in 2008 to 2250 in 2013. The locations Hechingen, Villingen-Schwenningen (development)[15], Schaidt (production, founded in 1970 by Becker-Autoradio) [16][17] and Hamburg (Innovative Systems, leading development base for navigation software[11]; sold to Neusoft China in 2008 as Neusoft Technology Solutions)[18] were closed or sold. As of January 11, 2010, Harman Becker Automotive Systems GmbH withdrew from the mobile navigation market.[19] The trademark rights for “Becker Traffic Assist”, “Becker Traffic Assist Pro”, etc. were transferred to United Navigation - a subsidiary of the MairDumont Group - which became bankrupt in 2017 and ceased operations.[20] The brands “Falk” and “Becker” were sold under the umbrella. In 2018, there were still remaining stocks of navigation devices on sale, but there are no longer free map updates for them. In November 2016 it was agreed that Samsung Electronics would take over the Harman Group for eight billion US dollars.[21]
