Chain Gang Cyclists Brunch Ride: is Elitism Still a Thing in Cycling?

  • I joined the monthly brunch ride arranged by Chain Gang Cyclists and there is also an occasion to talk about inclusion and elitism in cycling.
    Communities like CGC and Moloko Cycling focus more on integration and it seems a positive move for our sport.
    As usual I’m wearing a kit courtesy of Siroko Cycling, if you wish to shop you can use my direct link for an automatic extra 10% discount applied to the already reduced prices. No need for other codes, thank you!

    Great video Fede I’ve seen CgC out on the roads whilst I’ve been at work. I was very envious 😂. It’s so good to a group that is absolutely diverse and that is what cycling should be about . Cycling is very snobbish Fede you just have see some of the peeps at the Bun in Windsor looking down their noses at some of the bikes that roll in for coffee. Sometimes people for get it’s the person who powers the bike . That’s why I’ve given some people a good hiding on my 2015 Specialized Allez 😂😂😂😂. ( my only rim brake bike ) you did well to resist the urge to chase cyclists well done Fede 😂😂. As for that Dynamo guy well he should be ashamed of himself!! Keep up the good work my man 💪🏾👍🏽

      I have a couple of good friends at Dynamo, but definitely that move was a bit too close. I like dressing up for cycling and I care for my bikes, but it should not mean looking down on anyone. I feel it's getting better

    I've never been so only going on videos I've seen including this one but Richmond Park looks really nice to ride in but the sheer number of cyclists is crazy and would really put me off. Maybe because it's a Saturday it's so busy so perhaps mid week quieter but that looks awful. As for elitism, it definitely exists in cycling as it does in most sports I think. I've heard anecdotally that London Dynamos are particularly bad. Only heard one side of story though.
    I'm fortunate to live and ride in Pembrokeshire that it's so quiet, there are cyclists here of course but a tiny number in comparison. Maybe in London so many go to Richmond as it's comparitively safe and quiet from traffic(?).
    As it happens, I'd welcome more cyclists here as I'm usually riding alone apart from a club ride on weekend.
    Anyway, another excellent and balanced video.

    The eliteism really is a thing, I find that those people are often extremely insecure though and this can be clearly seen through their comments and actions on and off the bike.

    Some of the newer groups are much more inclusive and lot less elite. The older standing groups probably do still have a bit of elitism around.

    The best way to eliminate eliteism in cycling is to avoid talking about 'the bike' or 'the kit' during the ride. Reserve that in the coffee shop.
    There is a ton of things to talk about in life than those triangles with two wheels underneath you both while exerting effort forward towards your common destination.

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  ปีที่แล้ว

      But I so love talking about bikes!! And I like a nice kit! I can say I am Italian as an excuse??

    • @jestag2
      @jestag2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fede1275 Off the bike, yes. During the ride, a nicer conversation could probably be about the Italians' love for pizza, or flowers.... or something.
      Think of it like when you're in a Ferrari at a stop light, then the driver next to you says "nice car!", your best response would likely be a grin and the right foot on the pedal as the light turns green.
      Eliteism!

    It is absolutely still a thing and bike shops can be the worst. We have a beautiful shop in my city which is owned by that guy who used to have a bunch of Tour de France victories. Twice I went against my principles by shopping there and twice the employee disappeared when he found out I'm not fast and didn't own expensive equipment. That's all it took for me to stay clear.

    I remember when my first road bike needed a wheel repair so I went to the local bike shop that has a club. The mechanic there and this happened to a friend with the same model bike, basically said whats the point of repairing that because it was a slightly older more affordable bike. This instantly put me off joining there club.
    In contrast when I took the same bike to the mechanic I use now he couldn't praise the bike enough, told me its a great bike and rides really nicely.
    I think the elitism comes from the person more then anything.

    I feel like in cycling, most eliteism / snobism comes from perception. For instance I've noticed being greeted less by road cyclists when I'm in my Decathlon B'twin kit on my "mountain bike". The next day on my Carbon road bike in some Le Col kit and it is different. For me, I'm still the same guy 🙂.
    Before someone makes some elitist remarks on le col gear: I bought it because there was a discount 💰 due to a Strava achievement🎖

    • @fede1275
      @fede1275  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can understand, I guess in this case more than elitism would be some sort of road bike vs mountain bike group recognition. It would not be correct if you were on the same road bike and the different kit would generate different responses

    There's no elitism in cycling just the occasional elitists who usually lack any real substance (all the gear no idea types). I been told only once that there was a lot wrong with my bike because it's cheap but they couldn't back their words with ability on their super expensive bike. The cyclists we've met who are exceptional on a bike have been happy to ride as part of the group and go with the flow. I looked at cycling clubs but have never taken the plunge, thinking groups are far more relaxed. Sorry for the long comment but you did ask👍
