    Car enthusiasts of my generation started doing their dift days shortly after getting their drivers license.
    The morning of first snowfall in winter we would all go straight to the nearest supermarket car park and spend a few hours skidding about with huge smiles on our faces, and as such I have never lost control of a car.

    If you are going for a drive on country lanes, ensure your tyres are at the correct pressure. Understeer or oversteer can occur on wet, icy or slippery surfaces. I disagree with Mick about driving quickly at sunset or learning oversteer/understeer on car park at night. This is because the sun will blind you either from the front, side of rear. It's the same thing not long after dawn.
    You need to be careful of hazards, particularly junctions, either marked or not. You could have a tractor or other agricultural vehicle emerge from a farm track.
    If you really want to learn about understeer or oversteer, go on a track day. A car park at night has various pieces of road furniture which you can hit when you loose control. Not to mention speed bumps.

But sometimes I look at the RPM and man, they are always so low, and if I floor it the car just can't make power with such low RPMs... Your videos are awesome btw

    I once was driving through a corner and suddenly I understeered due to an oil+water puddle I did not see in time. I had no experience with that and turned my wheel even more. Suddenly I got traction and oversteered, which I overcorrected a bit and now was driving with the other side going forward. It was perfectly salvageable (I had time and road for that) if I had experience, which was not the case. Thankfully, I lost enough speed to the point that the only damage was when I hit the curb leaving the road and the two front wheels got a little bent and their tires got punctured. I learned so much since then. And go-karting was one of my teachers.

    It's funny, i kinda used all of those tips since i passed my driver's exam and got myself a "go-cart" yaris gr sport except obd ofc. It was like i knew already about those things from previous life or something lol. Driving felt natural to me and only thing that I was worried about was beaking manual transmission since I was not confident with it at that time so I got myself a car with automatic transmission. Somehow driving a manual began to get easier for me after gaining some expierience with automatic (Idk how but it just worked for me). I got most of my driving expierience from night "car meets" where I learned how my car behaves. Btw, in the place where I live there is literally none racing tracks nearby and its kinda expensive to even get a permit from owners to drive on them and the only racing track that was in my city was closed and bought by some investors that are doing nothing with this place since gaining ownership. That's also the reason why people moved to the streets to race.
    Personally, I would add a tip to this list that says something about knowing your car limits. It saved me from few crashes and since gaining my licence i've never been in accident. I only damaged my car from my stupidity like scratching a car in the night from something sticking out of the ground that was barley visible due to bad conditions or passing out and damaging the rim when driving and hitting the curb while being tired.
    Don't drive when being tired. Get a coffee or some rest. Know your limits like you know the limits of your car.

    About the powerband, especially for manual cars I recommend you google the torque and horsepower curve of your car. I found out that my car peaks at 4k rpm and tapers off at 6k. Knowing this gives me a slightly deeper understanding of my car and I know exactly how to work the power band for maximum efficiency.

    My cousin was a driving instructor and wanted me to take over (which I didn’t) in 80s, we would go what is now known as drifting in a disused carpark. To teach what it feels like when you loose grip on different wheels. When icy usually. He taught me horizon. Fastest on an A road in a car is 175mph, bike163mph. Annoying that a Nissan 35 twin turbo was faster lol. It was tuned. In 90s that was. Now if I am ever possibly, without prodigious lol. I always slow when passing other vehicles or any high risk. Junction etc. then accelerate. I also have ADHD which means I hyper focus when driving. I know what is going around me to my full forward vision, rear up and sideways. Just don’t bother trying to have a conversation with me as driving comes first. I now run an AMG estate. Fastest Leonberger dogs in the country, run flats before someone says blow out? A blow out on a bike at speed on front wheel and staying calm and in control. I’ll leave it there. Add rear bike and car and van. Never deviated from my lane.
    Sometimes get a 👍off other bikes when in my car? 😀 I wont say why.
    I don’t lane hog
    I don’t try to intimidate other drivers, driving too close etc. though sometimes I would love to.
    I will undertake with great caution vehicles that are oblivious or on a mission to personally police roads by blocking lane 3 at 67mph max.
    Driven in Europe a fair bit where the driving standards are so much higher than the UK which is terrible.
    Too many pretentious idiots trying to personally police roads? Because they are under the false pretence they are correct??
    What you are saying is fantastic for youngsters. A shame we no longer get stopped and lectured which actually sinks in and educates as opposed to fine and punish. My son is about to loose his license in wales at 36 mph on a wide road with good vision at 22:00 hrs. In England? 3 points max. He’s learning. Been a bad boy but no one has actually stopped, scared and educated him as to what and why it was wrong. Add no leniency ££££
    Take care
    Peace and love ❤️

    I would like having the torque gauge as I tend to change gear based on available torque more than I do on rpm or road speed. If the torque (for the amount of power I need) is nearing the top of the gauge, I change down. If I'm only using a tiny bit of max torque, I shift up (assuming the rpm isn't like 1000 or something).
    On my car I just have rpm, but the actual rpm before a gear change can be as little as 1500 or as high as the rev limiter depending on the situation, but maxing out on torque limits the power until the rpm can climb (and also not fuel efficient if it runs rich to force a higher gear), but not being high in torque if the revs are at least moderate, and the car would use less fuel in a higher gear instead of empty revs, unless you're getting ready to pounce. The accelerator pedal position is a very rough torque estimate, also instantaneous mpg, which dips with more torque, but these, or how loud the engine is, is not as precise.

    You said that putting more weight on the front causes more likely understeering, but it seems conterintuitive to me (i'm not saying it's wrong, i only have experience with motorcycles), since for example in motorcycling, you trail brake to load the front tire to have more grip and go in the corner faster, why this differs in cars?

    • @MickDrivesCars
      @MickDrivesCars  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Love this question!
      It's very similar to bikes. You gain grip... up to a point. Just like on a bike loading the front will progressively give you more grip until you go 1% too far and you lowside. It's the same in cars but you understeer when you go 1% too far. (There are some differences because of 4 wheels and anti-roll bar but it's largely similar)

    • @TunaIRL
      @TunaIRL 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      it's not different in cars per-se. While turning and trail braking, either can happen based on car setup and driver input.
      Oversteer is possible due to the rear wheels losing grip while the weight is shifted to the front tyres.
      Understeer can happen with forward biased brakes, and too hard application, causing the wheels to simply lose grip as well.
      (I believe) Road cars are usually setup to understeer in most situations, as it's more intuitive for even an inexperienced driver to control.
      Race cars are usually tuned to get a controlled amount of oversteer to get rotation around a corner quick, through braking and suspension setup.

      @@xsham6224 amazing reply but I would recommend bringing some tools for wheel replacement and an emergency road-side kit. Don't go alone or without phone service in case you or one of your friends puts their car in a ditch. And make sure your tools are secure and not flying around the cabin!

    I was driving just chilling going the speed limit and I was approaching an intersection where I usually slow down so I did now too it was like 3am as well so people usually don't let u go they are just zoned out, this guy coming from the secondary road slowed down basically stopping to let me go so I proceeded and as I was passing bro full pedalled it and I severed to the left to avoid collision, then I got out of car and went up to him and bro said "my bad Im drunk and I was checking for police" so what happened is he was looking back the whole time and when he didn't see anyone he just sent it straight to me

    Trail braking is almost impossible to properly execute at driving speed. At racing speed, its required. Very simple.
