All of the shots of Gord in the silver jacket and grey feathered cap come from his last show with the Hip. He discovered he had an incurable brain tumour and decided to put on a series of cross country concerts. 11+ million people tuned in to say goodbye on his last show.
His tumour was already affecting his ability to remember words and speak, so he had a prompter below him to help him remember his own words.
He knew he was gonna die, so he did something generous for everyone else.
    Canada is sad today.

Not all Americans were confused by this title. My college roommate was a huge fan of The Hip and turned me on to their music. She was from Virginia and I, Alabama. I do have to admit that I don’t know anyone else that knows their music, even here in my corner of California. It’s sad. We all lost an amazing artist today, but Canada, you sincerely lost a legend. :( Thanks for letting us bask in his genius. RIP Gord

jsjaodf fklaadsf 2 years later and they have a new fan in Australia. I gave up listening to the radio years ago- ‘alternative’ stations were playing too much bloody rap and hip hop- so I had heard of these guys but not listened to much of their music. I’m almost 52, married 27 years with 2 now- adult sons and my 22 year old is listening to The Stooges, Hendrix and Pup (Canadian I believe) and I’m listening to TTH, Jake Bugg and Fever Ray. Music makes life better. I’m so glad there’s so much of it to choose from.

Thanks for this list. You guys, and I mean this sincerely, seem to have a knack for making lists involving recent events like this without them ever seeming cheap or exploitative. It wasn't overly sentimental, just a look back and a band a lot of us love and are thinking about right now. Well done (even IF I would have put Locked In The Trunk of a Car on the actual list :D).

It's always sad when we lose a legend, but nothing has ever hit me as hard as losing Gord. I've been listening to the Tragically Hip my whole life, and my dad's been a die hard fan since the very beginning. I remember being little and jamming to Road Apples on car rides, and throughout my whole life being jealous every time my dad ventured to Canada to see the Hip. Or memories of Saturday mornings spend cleaning the house with the Hip blasting in the background. I knew Gord was sick, and I knew this would come eventually, but at the same time I couldn't imagine a world without him in it. I may not have known him personally, but I knew him through his music. And it's hard knowing that he's gone. It hurts. Thank you for everything, Gord. We love you, and we miss you ❤️

I remember waiting for my dad to pick me up at work one night. I was listening to the radio and Tragically Hip's "Scared" came on. It gave me goosebumps and I just decided to just sing along to it while staring out the window with personal thoughts roaming in my head. Just a natural reaction. People came in and out that staff room thinking what on earth is this guy doing. Trying to get my attention but I just carried on singing looking out the window. RIP Gord. Gone but never forgotten.

Poets, Bobcaygeon, Nautical Disaster, Locked in a Trunk of a Car, Can't Be Nashville Every Night, music @ work, Gus the Polar Bear, Fiddlers Green, Long Time Running, New Orleans Is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, wheat Kings and Highway girl, Pigeon Camera. I'm not Canadian-born, but my Auntie had a camp on Wolfe Island and needed to take the ferry from Kingston to get there. Fireworks
If there's a goal that everyone remembers,
It was back in ol' 72
We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger
And all I remember is sitting beside you
You said you didn't give a fuck about hockey
And I never saw someone say that before
You held my hand and we walked home the long way
You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr
    Isn't it amazing anything's accomplished
When the little sensation gets in your way
Not one ambition whisperin' over your shoulder
Isn't it amazing you can do anything
We hung out together every single moment
'Cause that's what we though married people do
Complete with the grip of artificial chaos
And believing in the country of me and you
Crisis of faith and crisis in the Kremlin
And yea we'd heard all of that before
It's wintertime, the house is solitude with options
And loosening the grip on a fake cold war
Isn't it amazing what you can accomplish
When you don't let the nation get in your way
No ambition whisperin' over your shoulder
Isn't it amazing you can do anything
Next to your comrades in the national fitness program
Caught in some eternal flexed arm hang
Droppin' to the mat in a fit of laughter
Showed no patience, tolerance or restraint
    Fireworks exploding in the distance
    Temporary towers soar
    Fireworks emulating heaven
Til there are no stars anymore
    Fireworks aiming straight at heaven
    Temporary towers soar
Til there are no stars shining up in heaven
Til there are no stars anymore
Isn't it amazing what you can accomplish
When the little sensation gets in your way
No ambition whisperin' over your shoulder
Oh isn't it amazing what you can accomplish, eh
This one thing probably never goes away
I think this one thing is always supposed to stay
Oh this one thing doesn't have to go away

American yes, Confused no, stumbled... not even close. Gord and the rest of the band were amazing musicians that happened to be from Canada. Not amazing Canadians that happened to be musicians. Learn the difference.

Oh hot air balloon, Your ropes drag in the ground, In the light of the moon, Leaving without a sound...From thin and wicked prairie winds come in, It’s warm and it’s safe here and almost heartening, Here in a time and place not lost on our imagination...
    Gord,
Thanks for a lifetime of music that means so much to so many people, thanks for showing a love so unfiltered and pure toward life and doing the right thing always. Rest In Peace

I wish The Hip had had a greater presence world wide. I think their music would resonate with many who haven't had the chance to listen to their extensive catalogue. Rest in peace Gord, you are, and always will be, a Canadian icon and hero.

    • @SonicKoolaid
      @SonicKoolaid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Problem was the Hip sang about everything Canadian and unfortunately that doesn't resonate with people outside of Canada so they never really reached their international fame the same way Rush and Neil Young were able to do but they are and will always be Canada's little hidden gem.

SonicKoolaid The hip made it big singing about Canada, but I'd like to think that some of their songs are just poetry in motion. They aren't Canadian by any means other than that Gord belts them out. I'm talking songs like Leave and In a world Possessed by the human mind.

I'm neither Canadian or American, but Australian. By pure chance, I found the clip of Little Bones as covered by an un-named garage band. I had heard of the Tragically Hip but had no idea about their music. I tracked down Little Bones on Spotify then went on a fully fledged journey into their back catalogue. What a discovery! Whilst obviously preferring some songs over others (Poets/Three Pistols/ Bobcaygeon/Grace Too to name a few) I was blown away by the amazing musicianship of the band as a whole and Gord's incredible lyricism which at times seems totally at odds with the musical direction but somehow works on so many levels. The word "juxtaposition" doesn't seem out of place in many of the songs. Another observation based on my love of REM is the similarity in style of performance both physical and vocal between Gord and Michael Stipe. I've no doubt the obvious connection would be documented somewhere - can anyone comment?

Gord's passing, still affects me in 2021 when I think about it and I was a late comer to enjoying the hip. Fully agree with Ahead By a Century being number 1 though, as it was the song that finally made me a true hip fan.

Even though i'm young, the Tragically Hip held a great place in my heart. I was thinking one day, "Gord Downie is a one in a million kind, he also has family and friends like Dallis Green, They will miss him very much...", RIP Gord, you were only 53. My condolences. I bet the sky was dull and hypothetical, you will always be apart of me and Canada, Thank you The Tragically Hip and Gord Dowine. #RIPGord.

amazing... they played in my hometown (of about 10,000 people) for two nights, and it was the first time the band had played in the same town, two nights in a row, in years. what they brought was phenomenal. it was such an amazing weekend having them come here and the music was unbelievable. I never had a chance to meet them but the committee that ran the concerts said that these guys were so nice and so humble. great Canadian band.

God and the Hip are Canada. We lost a chunk of our collective soul as a nation when we lost Gord. My life and my country would be less shinny, less kick ass and so much less HIP without him. If you don't know the Hip, I feel for you but the music is eternal ... find them, rock out and be transformed. And if you can find the live version of Highway Girl, listen to it and not laugh yourself silly at the dark humour of the spoken story held within ... know that you are dead inside and go buy a sense of humour. I love you Gord. I'll miss you forever but my heart will soar every time I hear one of your songs.
