Great Video!! If you want a more human and warmer experience when you go to Petra, I encourage you to budget a little more spending into this part of your trip. Some tips, not from your video but others I've seen; horse riding IS INCLUDED IN TICKET. The amount of a tip should be no more than 2 j.d. since the Garbadge men & car mechanics in Amman only make 1 j.d. an hour!! The horse leaders will fuss at you...but remind them of those workers in Amman and it settles them right down!!🤭 My 5 tips are:1. Buy the Jordan expert visa and take 3 full days in Petra. 2.buy your postcards from the little boys in the SiQ... no, their Parents don't send them down...those are the little adhd boys who flunk out of kindergarten and first grade and this is their saving grace. #3. buy your gifts for friends back home in Petra. Same $ as the shops in Amman but I guarantee you the exchange you can have with the women in those shops is well worth it and sitting and drinking tea with them- skip Starbucks. The Bedu need the money way more than the execs in Seattle. As for prices, I've had the women give me extra silver rings and things when they thought I overpaid them. So that I ended up with the deal. They are Muslims and Islam believes in fairness in trade. I try to buy from several different people. Likewise, don't take your lunch unless you get it from the little falafel shop next to the ChiffChaff..your not going to be saving so much. Its worth it to stop and take tea and snacks from the smaller shops along the way. 4. Camels are a nice way to get down by the coliseum or to the " church" or the fancy restaurant (nice buffet expensive but excellent , worthwhile quality ..)but from there if only 2 days - Walk to the Monastery Ad Deir and then the top of the world- but take a donkey back. #4.5 regarding the steps hes flashing, saying you need a guide. Yes you need a guide for those steps( on the left when facing the monastery) and NO that us not the same as when he waves his hand to the opposite side of the SiQ which is completely different - thats the Top of Jubal Hubth.and the stairs to that are down behind the Kings Tombs. And Yes the steps are open and free to the top of Jubal kHubth, but you might not go far enough around the back to find them. ..( the opposite way of how she's gesturing, I might add, you must go round the back of the Kings tombs.) Again, pleasant tea spots along the top way with amazing views and charming young Bedu. ( handle yourself the same way as you would in a big city.) One thing she did get right was agree on prices before hand. The Indian Jones way to the high place of sacrifice is cool.. (but very far) and then you can walk down the stairs in front that take you down to the Amphitheater. 5. basically don't pay more than 5 -10jd for anything! but a camel ride and that -pay no more than 15. ( and shes wrong, the more you dont take the animals, the less money for them to feed them.) Any time anyone troubles you about the prices, very sweetly remind them of the workers in Amman. On the third Day, you can go the back way into the Monastery Ad Deir -arrange a taxi from your hotel.(5-7 jd) If you have bonded with the/a Beduoin they can meet you and guide you but again agree on a price before hand and don't pay more than 15jd unless there's more of you and you can each chip in. If there is camels or mules involved then obviously thats going to be more 20j.d maybe even 30. Thats the way to do Petra right and if you are wealthy and you have more than by all means give more freely. Now this is not touching on the lovely frontway through the tunnel and around the back to the stairs at Jubal KHubth or the Lion &snake tombs or hiking Oum Biyhara ...that would require guides and at least two.more Days minimum!!
I had no idea Petra was so extensive. I thought it was just that iconic image of that main spot. Thank you for enlightening me. It’s so big though all I kept thinking was, those poor people must’ve suffered from the worst carpal tunnel syndrome, hammering into all that stone. Loved the video and did I see a couple of guys with shields? They made me smile.
Hey Gabe, another great video of Petra! It brought back great memories... Just so anyone is aware that might be planning to go there someday, if you go out past the Royal Tombs and around the corner, there is a trail head that you can hike up for free and it will take you to the view point of the Treasury from above Siq, where you saw that tent. There are two tents up there and I recommend walking past the first one, to get the best view and the guy there is really friendly. The trail you have to get a guide for, takes you up from the other side of the Siq. There are many more unlisted legit hikes in the area as well, to the tops of some of those rock formations in the distance where you saw the cave facades out there. When I went, I stayed at the Seven Wonders Bedouin Camp on the way to Little Petra. The guys working there are very familiar with the area. They even dropped me off at the back entrance and pointed out how to hike across from there, all the way to the Royal Tombs. Petra can definitely be a unique experience for everyone. Sorry, for going on. I just think the place is amazing.
Awesome video. I also noticed and said to my mother while we were watching your last video that it's hard to tell what it is man made vs natural earth formation. beautiful area!
This is a fantastic video & you’re a credit to tourists you’re civil to the tour guides desperately marketing their services. I especially loved how friendly and chatty everyone seems too ❤️
Awesome day in Petra. I really enjoy the longer videos, another excellent job Gabe. Everything's sounding and looking super with the new camera. I think that gentleman says it all, fuel for your fire and whiskey. Thanks
No doubt that Jordan is definitely a beautiful place with tons of histories and ancient civilizations to see there. Thanks for all kinds of valuable information, appreciated this video.
Incredible video! Completely worth 30 minutes of viewing! Compelling and fascinating. Truly amazing place. Thanks for sharing so much of the history and background. I had no idea it was so huge, either. I’m really impressed! 👍🏼✌🏼🙏🏼
Excellent, glad to hear it Karin. I didn't plan for these latest videos to end up so long, they just turned out that way. A pain to edit, process and upload but glad they're worth watching at least.
Gabriel Traveler Yes, I can completely understand the hours of effort having done just the smallest of things. To reduce hours of footage and make it hang all together is very much an effort. Sometimes I look at some longer videos and think, “I don’t have time.” But I hope viewers will read this comment and know it’s worth the effort, on all sides of it (creator & consumer)!
its amazing and mind blowing when you think how these caves are curved out in very hard stone rocks at a time where tools where so basic and probably made out of stones itself
buddy these are the best videos ive ever seen of petra, my mind is just blown! Now this place i must visit. you could spend a month here exploring and still find deep canyons where people lived. My kind of place in the cool of winter time. Rock climbers dreamland too.
Joe T yeah busy but don't think it was so desert at that time. All old civilization places were abandoned due to lack of water resulting in growing arid- desert region .
Best overview of Petra so far. I always thought it's was only that one building from the Indian Jones movie, but it' seems much more! thanks for sharing
Hey Gabe, love the videos especially those offering practical advice, budget travel, cheaper hotels and of course the all important WiFi, in India my wife and I would sometimes get the WiFi password and forget the room key! Have you ever thought of doing a video (perhaps when you're back in the US) about the GoPro, settings you like, time lapse, putting in still pics, transferring to laptop before uploading etc. Thanks for sharing. Patrick
Walking thru those winding canyons and then emerging upon those spectacular ruins must've been like a dream. I do have concern about the treatment of animals when I'm vacationing. I think it's OK to use animals as long as they are treated well. Sometimes you can just look at an animal and tell if they look treated well or not but of course I'm not an expert on the subject - just concerned. Thank you for the tips and the wonderful video.
How long was your flight to Jordon. Is it save to travel on your own .Can you get to the sites by local transport . where it the best place for the currency exchange
Thanks Jessica. Working on the next one about Wadi Rum, it's another longer one and they take a while to edit, so it'll be a few days most likely. After that they'll get shorter, so at least I'll be able to get them out more regularly.
Gabriel Traveler love the long videos you put like this one and I also love the short ones cause like u say you get them out more regularly and all your followers can get to see a video from you everyday keep up the great work Gabe :)
I love watching your travel videos! Sometimes I just listen on my drive to work. I never thought about visiting Petra or Elat until now. Thank you for sharing your travels. I'm praying that Yahweh will bless me to be able to travel to Israel, Jordan & Jerusalem.
7:21, that's a tomb dude, nobody lived in those. You can see the holes in the ground where the bodies were kept. All the nicely carved "caves" were used as tombs.
Great video as usual, just a heads up on climbing to the view point in front of the treasury, it’s quite easy and no need for a guide, done it several times
Great Job mr Gabriel. Before finishing looking your video 3 of my friends started to organise a possible trip to Jordan. Thanks for the great tips about prices and visas you give. :)
I assume pieces of Rock dislodge, and, or separate, and fall occasionally to the Floor/ground ,I wonder if a crew occasionally checks, for potentially loose pieces and manually assist in the detaching process due to safety reasons?
This is one reason sometimes I avoid visiting tourist places, especially in India. I just can't say no to a tour guide or a shopkeeper when approached directly. In India, they are mostly poor people trying hard to make a living out of it and support their families. I just feel bad saying no to them :(
WOW is all I can say about this place...Amazing and love how you handle the people whom keep asking if you want this and that..You're a Good Man and Brave one to..you got close to those edges and I found myself covering my eyes...hahaha..
Joe T yeah busy but don't think it was so desert at that time. All old civilization places were abandoned due to lack of water resulting in growing arid- desert region .
Thank you. We are going with a tour company, but many are curious/concerned about the walking (most people are over 65!). We are assuming our guide will take us around and we may not have the issues of other tour guides wanting to help us? I hope!
How much would you think a ride on a donkey/horse/camel would be to go to the Monastery from the entrance? I unfortunately cant hike due to health reasons but I would love to visit Petra!
I heard the price quoted a time or two. Now I forget, it would be pretty expensive to go all that way and back, maybe $60-80, but worth it if that's the only way to see Petra.
The people weren't so pushy when I went...I think it's because there are very few tourists nowadays unfortunately. Incredible country. Will you go to Wadi Rum as well? I think that was the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen in my life....enjoy and keep these videos coming :-)
I don't think the original civilization, that used Petra, meant to live there. I know it sound Sci-fi, but all you see there, could have been done with big enough CNC Laser machine. That would make the site more industrial in nature. Like a quarry, but for huge buildings. And Yes, that would imply that the finished products where than moved! I think that, Your videos show the industrial nature of Petra very-well. The question of where all the dugout gravel go ... Well nowhere, it's in the melted feetures in which stairs where etched. Thank you for giving us the chance to see these magnificent sights!
Are there tour guides you can hire on the spot there just to take my photos? I will be travelling solo but too cheap to pay expensive tours online so I probably gonna hike on my own. 😆
I didn't see any bikes in there, although I agree it would be a good place for them. I'm going to take a wild guess that bicycles aren't allowed because they would scare the animals (or maybe the real reason being they would be competition for them). When you walk in you go through a narrow gate thing that you couldn't take a bike through, so I think they don't allow them.
Great Video Gabriel..wish I had found your tube when I was younger I am sure I would have been spurred on to see places like Petra....are you having problems with the audio at the end the video otherwise is stunning..
Hi Dave, what was the issue with the audio? Was the music too loud or soft, or else was there an issue when I was talking? If you let me know the time in the video that will help me to see what you mean.
Hi at the end after your meal the audio comes and goes thought it may be your your finger over the microphone hole....internet here 50Mbps so not internet problem.
I see, yeah that very likely could be the case, might have been covering up the mic. It's a bit of a problem with this camera, also the rubbing sound because when holding the camera your fingers naturally go right where the mics are.
Great videos! Love the new video quality. Is it all with Hero 6? Do you use any gimbal or how is it so stable and good audio quality? is it possible that just GoPro? :D
Thanks, glad to hear it's looking good. Yes this video is all filmed with the GoPro 6 and it's just the internal stabilization of the camera, no gimbal or anything. It does a pretty good job.
Hi Gabriel, love the videos, I am going with my son to Petra and I have seen you mentioned before a hotel on Wadi Musa, and I am not able to find it anymore, would you please let me know the name of the hotel
I showed it in this video, I think I mentioned the name: th-cam.com/video/FiV-idHBAmE/w-d-xo.html Otherwise try booking.com, you should find something.
hi Gabe, awesome and very informative video. I was wondering how much USD/day including all your hotels , foods and tours? is 100USD/day budget is enough? planning to visit it soon along with Egypt and Israel
Id like to think as humans migrated out of Africa in the many waves over hundreds of thousands of years they stopped here too like the traders taking advantage of the springs and shelter. that's all over before they started carving the giant temples and tombs and houses. Maybe it all started with a few Petroglyph s, like Utah's famous newspaper rock.
I guess it depends on what you mean by Petra. If you mean the canyons then yes, they are probably millions of years old. But the civilization as far as evidence of human settlements is a few thousand years old, as much as they know anyway.
Great Video!! If you want a more human and warmer experience when you go to Petra, I encourage you to budget a little more spending into this part of your trip. I'm glad that the weather at Petra was much better than when you were in Amman and on the way to Petra.

No problem. I was interested in doing some more of the hikes but didn't have time. A heck of a lot to see there and worth several days at the least.
Awesome video. I also noticed and said to my mother while we were watching your last video that it's hard to tell what it is man made vs natural earth formation. beautiful area!
Great video. Amazing views. Wonderful choice visiting with less tourists and heat. Thank you for sharing. Safe travels.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing. Most of us wouldnt get to see the impressive extensive views that you have shown us.
Petra, Mind blowing & totally fascinating!! Exquisitely documented Gabriel, Thanks for Sharing..
Yes mind blowing to think this was a busy city 2000 years ago. WOW Great video.
Joe T yeah busy but don't think it was so desert at that time.
All old civilization places were abandoned due to lack of water resulting in growing arid- desert region .
Petra is awesome!!! I love it.

You're always so nice to the hawkers. I need to work on that. :)
Definitely by the Jordan Pass online before you go. It includes the visa fee and admission to Petra, and you save a lot!
Gabriel , i was there in March 2018 for only an afternoon. MUST return and plan more time there.
After seeing this video I am determined to visit Petra!
You are so polite to such a pushy sellers

Great video Gab any plans to visit australia ?
Fantastic!
Quality content, thank you
The people weren't so pushy when I went...I think it's because there are very few tourists nowadays unfortunately. Incredible country. Will you go to Wadi Rum as well? I think that was the most beautiful landscape I have ever seen in my life....enjoy and keep these videos coming :-)
Fabrizio Mundici Yes, sir. He said he was going with the Frenchman.
Great video!
i guess it makes me seventy fifth:-))) .....better late then never!:-) as always great video Gabriel.

Yes, there should be, might be a bit of hassle haggling with them but that could work.
I’m going here in September
Seems like it might be a good idea to bring your mountain bike. Do you know if this is possible?
That's a great idea, there has to be a tourism company that does bike tours around Petra.
Ah makes sense. You get to soak everything in a lot better when walking anyway
Good job gabe

I see, yeah that very likely could be the case, might have been covering up the mic. It's a bit of a problem with this camera, also the rubbing sound because when holding the camera your fingers naturally go right where the mics are.
how about getting a small mike and taping it to your arm facing toward you that may help..
Gabriel, If you had to pick a place to retire abroad, where would it be?
Look very cool
Must have been more water around back then
When you will visit us in Algeria brother ?
What other sites are best to visit other than Petra in the area?
hi Gabe, awesome and very informative video. I was wondering how much USD/day including all your hotels , foods and tours? is 100USD/day budget is enough? planning to visit it soon along with Egypt and Israel
Yeah $100 USD should be more than enough. See this other video where I talked about the prices: th-cam.com/video/Jdp4juEMvKo/w-d-xo.html
Petra, looks like it's millions of years old ?
Id like to think as humans migrated out of Africa in the many waves over hundreds of thousands of years they stopped here too like the traders taking advantage of the springs and shelter. that's all over before they started carving the giant temples and tombs and houses. Maybe it all started with a few Petroglyph s, like Utah's famous newspaper rock.
I guess it depends on what you mean by Petra. If you mean the canyons then yes, they are probably millions of years old. But the civilization as far as evidence of human settlements is a few thousand years old, as much as they know anyway.
Agree - I don't think it's from this world...
