  • On August 1st 2021 I did a Zoom Q&A with devotees from the New Delhi Ramana Kendra. I replied to questions submitted in advance. The topics covered included self-enquiry, the role, necessity, and power of the Guru, and the nature of karma.

David Godman is, for English speakers at least, one of the clearest commentators on Sri Ramana's method of self-inquiry today. As an academic, his articulation of often complex points of Bhagavan's teachings are nearly always conveyed with masterful simplicity and exceptional clarity of expression. This is why listening to David expand on Sri Ramana's teachings also functions as a rare lesson in lucidity and concision. Well done David and deepest thanks for the incredible good you are doing. 🙏

About 10 years ago, I became obsessed with every detail of Rama's life. Today I would recognize it as love taking hold of me. Like so many others, there was no recognizable result. When I thought that I had given up, the inquiry was always with me whether I intended or not. Inquiry seem to deeply root itself into my thinking process or rather life taking on a life of its own. I did ask for Romanoas help and woke up the next morning feeling as though the man himself was expressed throughout my body. I have no magically experiences or states of consciousness as so many people have described. However, I find my compassion for all of life and love is felt more deeply than before. I feel he was always with me and my heart jumps with excitement at The mention of his name. I thank you David for all that you do!

I met my inner Guru many years ago and was guided in many ways. He showed me Sri Ramana long time ago and now I am here again. I am definitely ready. I KNOW that I am not the body, but there is attachment, otherwise I would leave immediately.
Thank You so much for these very inspiring lectures.

    • @d1427
      @d1427 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Renate, the attachment is natural but has nothing to do with you. Let the mind be attached to the body- you can only watch; that which watches has no identity and no interest in that which is watched. If you need to give it a name, you may call it life or God- you, the observer is life/God, consciousness, self, awareness, etc. That which is watched is life expressed as sensations, emotions, feelings and thoughts. Life watches life- the only life you'll ever know, and you know it by being, not by thinking about it. Life is not in time but in eternity- the content of life is in time but life is not interested in the ever changing content. Life is about being conscious in the 'now'.
Later on, after further 'looking' you'll find the absolute behind this flow of life- that is the real you/self. It is just a matter of looking behind and beyond- that which is looking will be burned by the absolute like a moth attracted by the flame of a candle, becoming one with the flame in annihilation.

In 1976 , in the book IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS , I saw this one phrase, "remember yourself". After years of practice I could almost succeed in doing so. For about 3 years, I remember, I would practice for ten minutes and forget for about two weeks! After a few more years, the weeks turned into mere days of forgetting to 'remember myself'. Years passed and days of forgetting became only hours. 2009, (33 years later) I remember, was a very good year. Now, after 47 years practicing self observation, I begin phase 2; the practice of asking, "Who am I".
We all want a healthy fire to light our camp. A healthy fire begins with a spark. The spark catches the kindling. The kindling first warms the logs before they finally catch fire. It all takes time - is dependent on the dryness of the logs, not the heat of the spark.

I'm having trouble putting ideas about reincarnation and other lives alongside this amazing teaching. I see one as a belief system and the other as absolutely real with no belief needed. I think the next incarnation of these teachings will have to realise that belief has no place here, and we have to be prepared to admit we do not know.

"Look after the Silence" - that indeed captures the paradox of turning the light around to listen to the source of the light. In Taoist Yoga alchemy the left ear is yang and left eye is yin while the right ear is yin and right eye is yang. A Tibetan medical doctor describes this as collecting the energy of the Universe with the ears and then sending it back out with the eyes.

    Re atma-vichara eligibility:
It is interesting that many of the “big names” associated with Sri Ramana undertook practices other than self-inquiry. For example, Lakshmana and Papaji each undertook japa intensely until the last moments. Annamalai in contrast, was instructed by Sri Ramana not to undertake inquiry, but instead to continually remember that he is the Self, via the repetition of “I am the Self”. Muruganar arguably practiced bhakti.
And given Sri Ramana himself heard the name Arunachala repeating effortlessly within since a young child, it makes me wonder if Sri Ramana’s main practice in the life just prior to his final one, was nama japa.
It seems that even the most devout (eg Ganapati, Natanananda) discover, that the true vichara (to be as you are) is extremely difficult. Most will require an aid such as the mental question “who am I?”, japa or some other practice, so as to first render mind one-pointed.

Self inquiry in a sense is for ripe souls meaning, if one has understood this concept very clearly then it's like a sharp knife that can be used to cut the knot of ignorance. It's a terrific teaching that can be done anywhere, anytime. If not understood, then better to start with japa, puja, etc. Self inquiry can be understood clearly if one has understood the various components of the mind - chitta, vritti, aham, smriti and their relationship to the glorious atman.

Self inquiry in a sense is for ripe souls meaning, if one has understood this concept very clearly then it's like a sharp knife that can be used to cut the knot of ignorance. It's a terrific teaching that can be done anywhere, anytime. If not understood, then better to start with japa, puja, the devotional aspect of worship which eventually leads to enquiry. Self inquiry can be understood clearly if one has understood the various components of the mind - chitta, vritti, aham, smriti and their relationship to the glorious Atman. For me after reading Raja yoga by Swami Vivekananda, I can relate to self inquiry better since it helps to exactly pin point what is to be focussed on. Of course Bhagavan's answer is final since an advice given by a jnani far outweighs any answer given by a book read scholar.

very fascinating. Based on Mahayana Buddhism - the body also needs to be "emptied out" into formless awareness or else the body becomes sick and unhealthy - unbalanced. Ramana Maharshi seemed to have relied on the Brahmin caste system to have people take care of his body as he left it decay.

@@cristovaljesusamado8455 I have seen the ghosts being healed by qigong master Chunyi Lin and also as explained in the free biography of Phra Acharn Mun of Thailand. So yes the spirit as a ghost has to be healed back into the Emptiness and the healer does this by embodying the Emptiness themselves (via the right side pinhole of the heart). So thank you for this clarification. Yes Master Nan, Huai-chin or Huajin also explains this paradox found in Ch'an Buddhism whereby the Ch'an masters have their body sick but are still able to empty out their thoughts with each breath.

Q 1- Best method is try yourself which method suits your temperament. In middle of japa, chanting, bhajan if one can ask who is going this japa then one will merge in source and there is no 'I' left to perform japa.
For self enquiry 'I' should be free to investigate, all prelimilenary practices are to make 'I' free. Once it is free then 'I' automatically sink into source as soon as enquiry is done. Effort is till finding "I"& holding it. As Bhagwan said, "It is impossible for you to make any effort beyond a certain extend". David sir, pls correct me if I am wrong.

yes that's why Ramana Maharshi required vegetarian diet to strengthen the mind and weaken the body.

In Taoist Yoga there is the "relative void" as light seen in the mind internally and the "absolute void" as light seen externally while the eyes are open. The "absolute void" needs to be maintained while doing activities, etc.

So thats why you can never ever fully take in 100% value anything, without checking things out or proving it yourself. In so many cases others who have involved, have put their own meaning into it, risen of their own understanding and restriction of their own current self.

I think one should start with understanding the root meaning of the word PERSONALITY, after decades of enquiry, I guess this word has the key.
The word "personality" stems from the Latin word persona, which refers to a theatrical mask worn by performers to play roles or disguise their identities.
Who am I? may help us find who were we before we took to a personality.

Maharishi himself said First the The seeker has to disappear. The problem is you are trying too hard looking for yourself. All mantras meditations processes are in the realm of Maya. Keep your mind quiet. Empty it of your ego and gradually dissolve into the absolute.

Master Nan, Huai-chin claims that the self-enquiry is lost if the body is sick. So the mind can not be emptied out right before death. So then the body must be harmonized as purification with the meditation practice.

@@theghostwhowalks2097 I'm just saying Ramana had "volunteers" to help take care of his sick body. I suppose they could keep reminding themselves that they were not really doing that. Only the SELF was helping out his sick body. It works great for the Brahmin caste system so I suppose it should work great for Advaita Vedanta also.
