I have recently added a long presentation on self-enquiry to my site. An expanded and edited version of this TH-cam talk appears there. The link is: davidgodman.org/newsite/wordpress/who-am-i-sri-ramana-maharshis-teachings-on-how-to-realise-the-self/
David, a great job you are doing. Your rendering of the Who Am I? brochure helped me grasp something. I don't claim to have made a great progress, but this method does work with me in eliminating negative thoughts. Before, I turned to the writings of Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, now I see that Ramana Maharshi's self-enquiry method is more efficient.
Gratitude for your work. Only, if you will allow me, one suggestion, please. Since I do not speak English I use machine translation and it is not very faithful, so could you make subtitles available in Spanish or even Portuguese?
I was going through difficult times in the last year and discovered meditation. I watched many videos on Sadhguru, Allan Watts, Ram Dass, read several books (Zen, Tao Te Ching,..). All somehow helped me but I think they were temporary. However, once I read Sri Ramana Maharshi’s book “Who am I”, it really clicked me. Thank you David for your video, it is very useful particularly after reading the book and practicing a bit 🙏.
Welcome to Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) sir. Sanatan Dharma believes entire universe is born from same source Whom we Hindus call AUM(OM). Hence we believe that Parmatma (God) is in every thing because all have born from same source and that same source is present within all as vital life force, hence all are equal that's why our Sanatan Dharma scriptures says "Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam" means not just 3-4 but whole world is our family. Love for all hatred for none. We believe within every living being there is divine God that's why we do namaste to all means I bow down to the divine in you. That's why you will find majority of Sanatan Dharmi Hindus vegetarian also as we see Parmatma (God) even within animals. Our Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism) is oldest civilization on planet Earth created by Parmatma. It all about spirituality and human salvation from cycle of birth and death. Welcome to Sanatan family. 😊
Who is Sadguru?, please don't use this title for any one else other than Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi or none other than Lord Krishna. Unfortunately many people are being fooled by some who call themselves as Sadguru.
Ramana Maharshi is like the professor, and David Goodman is like the teaching assistant who conducts tutorial sessions to answer any questions that arise as one solves problems. Thank you David. The last few sentences clinch the matter definitively.

Beautifully explained. I've found the trouble most people have is regarding the interpretation of, 'focus on the I thought'...the word 'thought' in this instruction being the most confusing to 99.9% of people. He actually means the most intimate thought, or subjective 'sense' of self or what I call 'youness' rather than the conceptual, historical 'idea' of you. It's literally closer than the tip of your nose and still isn't the real I. Yet the realisation that this subjective 'sense' of I is actually the original thought is the beginning of its end. Consciousness is a clever stick!
Very succinct, no nonsense explanation. Thanks David! What a wonderful calling have you got yourself. Reminiscent of how St.Paul was called to his ministry without having seen Jesus, and yet ended up being his most effective apostle. God bless your work :)
I am so grateful that such lucid and helpful clarifications, that themselves closely follow the source teaching, are available, esp for a beginner like myself. Beginnings are delicate times. Half a degree may not seem very much on a compass. But the further you go, the more that half a degree, or slight misconception, will expand. So, thank you David, Henry and all those experienced people who are so willing to help and guide, selflessly.
If one happens to read the comments made by several people who have listened to this talk, one cannot disagree with those comments as the speaker has thoroughly explained the methodology of self enquiry as suggested by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi himself. The speaker has taken so much of interest in explaining the methodology so clearly in order to encourage the seekers to follow this approach easily. I don't have any words to express my gratitude to the speaker. Many many thanks 🙏🌹🙏
Thank you very, very much for this, and not just for this one, but for the whole flood of documentaries you shared. These instructions a like a reset button to push each time the mind starts to distort enquiry. Much love and thanks form my whole family.

" 18:47 "... What is this thing inside you that is aware of your thoughts? What is this thing inside you that claims it's perceiving objects as inside of yourself?.." 19:37 "... Mr. Godman, Namaste. I love the way you narrate Bhgawan's stories. Many a time it brings shivers in my spine and hair stand straight on my hands . I cant quite explain the infinite peace I feel. You have created what we call Pothi - which is a sacred book chronicling the saint's life , for example Mr. Dabholkar wrote Sai Sat Charitra in 1920's on life of great a Saint Sai Baba of Shirdi , and this book is read with devotion by millions of devotees. Your style is equally eloquent, sweet and loving , totally filled up with bhakti and jnana - you actually takes us to those times when Ramana was alive in his body. Incredible. You too are a true devotee and your life is well spent on creating such an important and humongous work . Shall we call your Pothis as as "Ramana Mahatmya" . Some of these distinctions and differences in the practice have been causing me trouble for 14 years and this video really helped me sort them out. Thanks!
Thank you so much for your wisdom. It really touched my soul. Spirituality is not an easy voyage but I will keep practicing till the end of this my physical life. Aum shanti 🙏
Dear David, Really superb recordings. Not just this, but all of this series is a wealth that Ramana devotees would cherish forever. Thank you so much. Highly appreciated. Maha guru sri Ramana Saranam.
Precise, Concise Sri David Godman. Please accept my prostrations to you. So beautifully explained. Some day, if you have time, pls share your personal experience in practice. We will be immensely benefit. Thanks.
+Ramanathan T I have been doing self-enquiry for years now... I find it very difficult, but it gets easier the more I do it, often unexpectedly. It absolutely brings results, generally not immediately, for a time it seems hopeless, and often has a delayed effect, but all the effort I have put into it, absolutely rebounds and I have had various moments of the I disappearing entirely after doing enquiry for weeks, usually after intense suffering drove me into it. If anyone wants to discuss experiences with it, practical matters, whatever, please send me a message, I would love to be able to contact others who are interested in Enquiry or already do it as a regular practice.
+Evan Cary When I first did it, it was at a time that I was becoming too disenchanted with open eye meditation because as David makes clear there IS that distinction between meditation and Inquiry. But in faithfully following a guided practice on CD put out by one of Nisargadatta's devotees, for about a two week period I was basking in this state though as an experience it was naturally temporary. But paradoxically enough, my level of self confidence and sense of operating without boundaries was immense.
+Mary Gwen Dungan It's "guided meditation" created by Stephen Wolinsky. He himself is featured in a number of You Tube videos and you could order the CD or his DVD'S from links on whatever videos he has these on.
Awesome! This talk is so poignant to what's important. The I is a foreign installment an imposed interpreter like lense put over our "the" true seer in ourselves which is also God. Thank you for passing on truth. Historically, of the sage and truly relevant today. Paul Hedderman has brought this to my attention regularly for a yr now.
mate thanks so much for your work. you explain it neatly without the frills. i have had your videos on repeat and it sinks in more and more (and with self inquiry) everytime. From the bottom of my heart, thankyou so so much
Excellent content and clearly delivered. Becomes more and more clear thanks to teachers like you who cut through the fuzzy language and go straight to the point. Thank you!
What one needs to do is part 1 and what happens after is part 2. I don’t think part 2 is in our control or effort. This is brilliantly and concisely explained from approx 4:30 to 9:00. I am very Grateful for this video. It’s a Precious gift ! Thank you
Thank you David for taking the time to create and share these videos with the world. I have watched all of your "Narrated by David Godman" series and they have been very informative and inspirational. I sincerely wish you all best on the path. You are doing a great service to humanity, Ramana would be proud. Peace.
He is within and with out. He is everywhere and nowhere. Ain Sof is His Name yet no name has He. Hashem is my love; The Name, I AM. Silence is best yet I am too vain for that. When He called me 50 years ago He told me, "I am not doing this because of any worth of you own; because you have none. You are proud and stiff necked. I am doing this for all of the evil in the world."
I wish Korean subtitles were added. I hope that this great teaching, ultimate and practical, will be easily accessible to Koreans as well. Your humble attitude and your pure intention and passion to convey Bhagavan's message is truly beautiful. Thank you sincerely mr godman.
Thank you so much David. You really explained things that I had never understood. May you be blessed for sharing your direct experience and leaving a legacy.
I appreciate the way you narrated the teaching of RM so vividly as they are. Thanks for the information. I was in search of this stuff for a long time.
Mr. Godman, thank you so much for your clear and direct explanations of Sri Ramana's teachings. You are making the Maharshi's essential insight accessible and available to so many and I thank you.
Dear Mr. David Godman........I have listened to numerous narratives by you regarding Ramana M and others and I have enjoyed your explanations thoroughly. Your clarity and sincerity reaches the core of our heart........your adoration for Ramana M just causes tears !!!Thanks for the great service you are rendering to novices like me!!!!
great video on self-enquiry, helped clarify the theory and technique of the practice for me i've been practicing self-enquiry on and off for a year with some positive results, but one problem i have is that the practice seems to only effect the surface level of my mind, without penetrating to the deeper layers although if i practice concentration at the spiritual-eye before self-enquiry, it does penetrate to the deeper unconscious layers, or if i practice a buddhist mindfulness of body sensations, this also helps me go deeper into the mind, i have also tried breath concentration before self-enquiry but this hasn't taken me to the depths of the mind when combined with self-enquiry, it's interesting that breath concentration with self-enquiry doesn't take me to the depths of the mind, but third-eye concentration with self-enquiry does, it seems to me that in india there are many more people who are living in this third-eye awareness, or at least practicing a technique with a similar energy i feel that concentration at the spiritual eye may be making me more aware of the subtle body or astral-layer of reality, i wonder if ramana maharshi had spent previous lifetimes developing this awareness, so that when he found self-enquiry, his mind was continuously living on the subtle-body soul level, and therefore self-enquiry alone was all that was needed to penetrate the deep layers of the mind anybody have any thoughts or advice on this? self-enquiry (for me) can be relatively shallow unless i combine it with the right sadhana. Is it possible to use self-enquiry alone to go to the depths of the mind for temperaments like mine? Am I just not being persistent enough with it? or do some people naturally have a certain quality of consciousness that makes self-enquiry more effective for them? This may explain why some people experience so much frustration at not sensing any progress with self-enquiry
Hi, I feel if you have practised meditations in previous incarnation s you may dissolve the (i) ego state a lot quicker than some who haven't 🙏🙏 This could explain why some get tuned in quicker?? Fact that we are here discussing shows that we are on the correct wave length!!!!🙏🙏🎆🌈💜💜🍁🍁🌸🌸🌷🌷🌹🌹🌻🌻

I just substitute who am I? for my thoughts and focus on being aware that I'm aware, totally ignoring the ego. I do this for 1+ hours a session, at least 3 times daily, and you can do it while you drive your car or go for a walk. Being aware that you're aware is what self-inquiry leads to. After a session the burn-off phase begins and you can take a break.
Great.....as one who's been many years on this direct path, and experienced the ecstasies and the agonies, I relate strongly to your comments here. In Tiru last month Swami Ji (Atmananda) mentioned that he had tried to get you to talk to us about your work, but you were out of town. Swami's satsangs were based on the book Padamalai, which is now at my bedside. Thank you for the great work you did helping translate and compile this beautiful collection of Bhagavan's teachings. Om.
I listened your naraartions earlier too... Everytime I listen them one or other things gets clarified... Now i have better understanding of self enquiry... My heartiest thanks to... I have read your other books too...they are really a true guide for me...The very first book which i read was Living In The Presence of Bhagavan compiled by you...this book gave me inclination or love for Bhagavan...Once again thanks to u... Hope to see u when I come to Tirruvannamalai... Lots of regard...
Hi David, Thank You for your great work. You have brought Bhagavan alive to so many of us who were not fortunate to be born when he was alive. I wish I could have been in his presence. I also wish they had recorded the talks with Bhagavan so that we could hear his voice and blessings directly from the Guru. The path of self-realization is very difficult and I hope HE has mercy in me to take me away from this materialistic world through HIS grace. May God always LOVE me and all of us such souls who want to experience him and reach him. I am sure since we are his creation, he has pity on us and does LOVE us, This life of mine has gone waste and I am not sure if I will ever experience HIM or see HIM this lifetime. Om Namo Bhagavate Ramanaya! Krishna
David was born after Bhagavan crossed into eternity & met him through a book by Arthur Osborne. The miracles have been happening for so long... We're definitely blessed

Ah, this is SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you so much for this video. I'm reading the little booklet right now and you are right: inside it you will find everything you need to know, .. which we knew all along but forgot we do.
@David_Godman. Thanks for this clear and accurate explanation, this helps me to return by back to inner I and practice it easily whenever I distract Thankyou again
VERY spot on presentation, easily among the best "one" could find on You Tube. David has a very straightforward, very keen understanding of this topic, one of the few rare "individuals" who could claim that and I was equally impressed with seeing that in his interview on Bat Gap. It's even much better seeing this on video as opposed to reading about books on it(given that the mind might try so hard to grasp or interpret the written material).
I have recently added a long presentation on self-enquiry to my site. An expanded and edited version of this TH-cam talk appears there. The link is: davidgodman.org/newsite/wordpress/who-am-i-sri-ramana-maharshis-teachings-on-how-to-realise-the-self/

This is a piece of diamond!
Thank you David!
Exactly, Self-Enquiry is the Diamond!
Love&Light to David!
Truth
You're welcome.
Oh. Different David. Sorry.
Bless you sir! And bless Sri Ramana! His teachings are so direct. #SelfEnquiry #HoldIntoIThought #SriRamanaMaharshi
Just a superb and clear presentation. Deep thanks , devotion and blessing to all who created this video.
Precise, Concise Sri David Godman. Please accept my prostrations to you. So beautifully explained. Some day, if you have time, pls share your personal experience in practice. We will be immensely benefit. Thanks.
+Ramanathan T well commented. I agree that it will help if David shares his personal experiences on the practice.
+Evan Cary Any email id to message you?

When I first did it, it was at a time that I was becoming too disenchanted with open eye meditation because as David makes clear there IS that distinction between meditation and Inquiry.
David Godman has given me great confidence in the Teachings. I am very grateful.
mate thanks so much for your work. you explain it neatly without the frills. i have had your videos on repeat and it sinks in more and more (and with self inquiry) everytime. From the bottom of my heart, thankyou so so much
ரமண மகரிஷி அவர்களின் வாழ்க்கைப் பயணத்தை மிகவும் எளிமையாக சொல்லியிருக்கும் அழகு பாரட்டுக்குரியது.
Excellent content and clearly delivered. Becomes more and more clear thanks to teachers like you who cut through the fuzzy language and go straight to the point. Thank you!
Agree; also appreciate no throng of paying "worshippers" 😊.
Thanku Mr. David... you have true knowledge of the teachings of bhagwan Ramanamaharshi...and you have deep understanding of the self.
An absolutely fantastic video! The best so far for me personally. Thank you mr. Godman.
Peace.
Thank you. I admire your work and love for Ramana. You were chosen for this role.
By whom?
By Him within you
He was chosen by God for this role. Oops, I just realized what you mean. Thank you.
Staring at Bhagavan in silence is the loudest prayer. Thank you
Gosh, I'm with everyone else... this is sooo affirming and helpful. Thank you David, I love Ramana...
There is no "I" to be with everyone else because there is no everyone else either🤗🙏
@@ozgursenturk11-11 bro are you a Turk I am first time seeing a Turk interested in Hindu sanatan dharm teachings
@@pratyushambastha4819 I'm not Turk I was born in Turkey and I speak Turkish language🙈😎🤷🏻♂️🙏❤

A true enlightened master. Sublime.
most profound teaching. There was an awakening due to your presentation.Thank you.
Thank You. You are great!! It is of great help to improve clarity on "Who am I" practice.
thank you David for responding and the clarity and pointing me in the right direction. Much appreciated😊
Best ever explanation of "Who Am I".
I am blessed to hear this...
Clear! Wonderful, so profound! Thank you so much. 🙏🏾
listening again Mr. Godman. six months later. What a clarity. How can I ever thank you for this service.?. Regards.
This is pure practical, descriptive nectar. listening to it repeatedly, ever grateful David 🙏🏻
I wish Korean subtitles were added. I hope that this great teaching, ultimate and practical, will be easily accessible to Koreans as well.
Your humble attitude and your pure intention and passion to convey Bhagavan's message is truly beautiful. Thank you sincerely mr godman.
What an amazing talk! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for these videos... I am so so happy to find these videos.. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
The 6 minutes starting @16:14 is pure gold.
Thank you ~ I couldn't recall the time stamp for that. Beautiful text, too
David, you are brought to us by Sri Ramana to clarify most of our doubts. Thank you is a small statement!
great video on self-enquiry, helped clarify the theory and technique of the practice for me
i've been practicing self-enquiry on and off for a year with some positive results, but one problem i have is that the practice seems to only effect the surface level of my mind, without penetrating to the deeper layers
although if i practice concentration at the spiritual-eye before self-enquiry, it does penetrate to the deeper unconscious layers, or if i practice a buddhist mindfulness of body sensations, this also helps me go deeper into the mind, i have also tried breath concentration before self-enquiry but this hasn't taken me to the depths of the mind when combined with self-enquiry, it's interesting that breath concentration with self-enquiry doesn't take me to the depths of the mind, but third-eye concentration with self-enquiry does, it seems to me that in india there are many more people who are living in this third-eye awareness, or at least practicing a technique with a similar energy
i feel that concentration at the spiritual eye may be making me more aware of the subtle body or astral-layer of reality, i wonder if ramana maharshi had spent previous lifetimes developing this awareness, so that when he found self-enquiry, his mind was continuously living on the subtle-body soul level, and therefore self-enquiry alone was all that was needed to penetrate the deep layers of the mind
anybody have any thoughts or advice on this? self-enquiry (for me) can be relatively shallow unless i combine it with the right sadhana.
I think your answer is in minute 36:03
Hi, I feel if you have practised meditations in previous incarnation s you may dissolve the (i) ego state a lot quicker than some who haven't 🙏🙏 This could explain why some get tuned in quicker?? Fact that we are here discussing shows that we are on the correct wave length!!!!🙏🙏🎆🌈💜💜🍁🍁🌸🌸🌷🌷🌹🌹🌻🌻
Is not it easier to hold on I thought?
🙏 Om Namo Bhagwate Shri Ramanay... Thanks to David Godman sir
Thank you David, awesome video, marvellous demystifying of the process and teaching in simple English. Very grateful for this.
Better explained is imposible!! Amazing genious David Godman!!!!
Just started reading Be as you are a couple days ago, absolutely love it. 🔱💚🙏
Om.
Thanks for the excellent explanations of Maharishi"s teachings.
Loved this video. Thank you very much David. You have not only answered many questions, but confirmed some of the understanding too.
Thank you for sharing this sharp, clear truth about our own existence.
This is one of the best. Please accept my deepest gratitude.

I'm reading the little booklet right now and you are right:
inside it you will find everything you need to know, ..
which we knew all along but forgot we do.
Excellent explanation! Thank you David!
thank you so much , this video itself enough to clear all doubts about self enquiry process , great job
Thank you so much for your time taken in presenting. Your videos are exquisite in their clarity.
thanks you sri Godman, we are truly grateful for your very careful and accurate discussions, very few people are so clear on Bhagavan's teachings.
Thank you 🙏! Very clear and informative.
Brilliant exposition David.Clarified so much for me.Many, many thanks for posting.Namaste.
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you.
Beloved keep you.
Thank you David! 🙏
@David_Godman. Thanks for this clear and accurate explanation, this helps me to return by back to inner I and practice it easily whenever I distract
Thankyou again
Perfect - Best in the Series! Love them all- but this one is so incredibly helpful! Thank-you.
Well said David beginning to understand.thanks
