I was privileged enough to have used this gun on my first duty station in Ft Sill. I was the driver as well as the guy who fired it. Expend all ammo was the absolutely the best command we were given. Between the 5 or 6 of us in that gun, we were a well oiled machine. How I miss those days....as well as my hearing. Lol.

Hi from Korea! I used to be a crew of K55A1 on active duty, which is based on license-produced M109, so all the interiors and exteriors shown in the video bring back lots of memories. I remember attending to this joint conference with the US forces in Korea on the resolution of overlapping firing sites in the event of DEFCON 2~1. Conference lasted only a few days, but all of your officers had been very professional, cooperative, and friendly. I recall our First Sergeant noting that you guys fire without "spading"(plowing the shove-like plates in the back into the ground, I don't know if you guys use the same term), probably with mobility a high priority and good accuracy of the machine guaranteed. It was a great experience, I hope the best for all personnel affiliated with the US military.

If the ground is solid never use the "spading" because you could make a crack in the body. Use the spading only in very soft ground.

Hello brother, you don’t know me, but I know a lot about you.
I am a member (used to be) of the 1st Special Forces Group here in the US. The group that Specializes in Asia and East Asia.

I trained Thai Rangers and cross-trained with your excellent Special Operators in 2004, although they were organized different then (?).
Anyway. Do you remember when the Northerners artillery shelled some islands of yours of the East or west coast of S. Korea on the border but of the mainland (I believe, feel free to correct me). This would’ve around ‘03-‘05. Killed a dozen or more villagers.

I was involved with the transition from short tubed M-109s to the A-1 version with the longer barrels. There was a problem with the rounds not seating in the forcing cone. When loaded, and the gun raised into battery, the projectile would often fall back against the powder and this reflected on accuracy. Rounds were going everywhere around the impact areas. So, what we had to do, was seat the round, then, with the breech open, raise the tube to max el, and bounce it off the stops a couple of times to ensure it was seated, before adding powder and primer. Once, at max el, a round came flying out of the breech backwards, bounced off the floor, then hit the rear of the hull and bent the PD fuse right over. I was #1 man, and I remember trading glances with my CoS. I always wondered whether my eyes were as wide as his were. From then on, we hooked two fifty foot lanyards together, and I fired the gun from behind an M-548 which was parked 100 feet behind the gun.

@HEAD SHOT negative. A lot of European militaries have better versions of this artillery piece. They have a lot less than us but they are more technologically advanced. They have methods of assisted loading too making sending rounds faster and easier. The way we are doing it still is similar to how cannons were loaded way back in the creation of America. Obviously we have had advancements but it's still all done by hand assembling the round in the tube and pulling a string. Europe has basically streamlined this process and made it more efficient

Trained on M109a1s, put 2200 miles on an a2 with the 1st ID (Forward) as the driver, and served as an FDO, XO and BC (BIOCC 2-83) on a3s. Saw the first a4s being tested at Sill while I was the XO of a btry there with the 75th Brigade.
If todays gun bunnies are anywhere near on the bounce as we were 40yrs ago they do their heritage proud, and the advantages built into the Paladin make them significantly more lethal.

To anyone that thinks that manual loading is a downside: you are wrong, having a loader means you got an extra set of hands to help around the tank when outside combat, did you all know that the Strv tank was initally developed to be manned by only 2 crew members(driver and commander) but then was requested for it to have have space for 3 (driver, commander and radio operator) becasue there is just too much going on in the battlefield for just to 2 ppl to deal with, also, self loading mechanisms are complex and could be easily incapacitated by enemy fire, you wouldn't want the main armament of your tank to get knocked out for something as silly as a splinter of metal caught between cogs would you?

We had the use originally of an M548 ammo carrier and then transitioned to the newer M992 FAASV ammo carrier.
What I'm seeing here is the Paladin doesn't use the ammo carrier anymore? As it is completely self contained? If so thats fantastic!
