    The way how it manages its barrel steady right after firing is so impressive. It might be a key part of its high firing rate. A peace of art.

      In Germany we don't call it 'a piece of art', we call it "Taktzeitoptimierung" and I think that is beautiful.

    Some years ago I worked for KMW in Kassel (Germany) in a project where we documented all aspects of the PzH2000. I was able to meet the people who made the hard and software for everything in the PzH except driving. I appreciate every hour they have worked with me.

      What is your opinion of the possibility of sending this to Ukraine?

    • @markusfischhaber8178
      @markusfischhaber8178 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@user-lh1uu7cs9u Well you can transport it quite easy by train or truck, but you can not make it fit into a plane. It uses NATO standard ammo so it should be no problem to supply enough ordonance. BUT: it need a Command and Control Center to get its Fire Commands or you need to know how to enter da Fire Command localy. The Software is German and most Names and Commands are German. So i see no problem in mooving and supporting, but a problem in using this thing

    • @vencdee
      @vencdee 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@markusfischhaber8178 Well I'm startled that the software is not using standard localization to the well known languages (NATO languages) or that it can't be switched somewhere in setup. Such things (gettext strings config files) are well known even for C/C++ which I would expect the software is written in. Netheerland soldiers are using German UI ? 😀
      Relying on Command center is IMO illusive in real war conflicts where the connection may fail from various reasons (heavy bombardment of infrastructure or intensive jamming). The crew should be able to work independently... As I know, In Ukraine the army units are decentralized to a certain level which is an advantage to the Russian army which works on direct orders (therefore you can paralyze it by killing the top commanders etc.).

      It also comes with GPS, all kinds of automated calculations and communications. You need the target position and the computer determines the direction, elevation, type of shell, amount of powder... when the first shell hits the ground the system detects how much it is off and autocorrects within seconds for the next shot. Bulls eye.

    Seven of these self-propelled howitzers are on their way to Ukraine. 18 Ukrainian teams are currently being trained in Germany. With a maximum of 10 rounds per minute you can imagine what is going on at the end of a proketil's trajectory. Before the survivors on the Russian side know where the rain of steel came from, the howitzers have already moved on again. I hope our government releases many more of these highly useful PzH 2000s. Ukraine should get everything it needs to kick ass the Russian orcs!

      I used to serve on an M109, also a 155 mm gun, back when NL still called up conscripts. I don't know if the situation with the PZH2000 is comparable, but this is what I remember. 1) Usually the 'weaker' men were called up to be arty, i.e. fat guys, thin guys, short guys and so on. 2) After a few weeks, a lot of the guys in the crews in my battery had doctors' notes saying they weren't allowed to lift anything heave (i.e. shells). We made do with whomever did not have or did not fake a bad back. 3) Although the shells were heavy (45kg approximately), they were compact and relatively grippy, which made them easy to handle. Also, 4) rumour had it that the Germans used strong men as loaders. The reason was that they hydraulic loading system was fairly slow, whereas with manual loading you could get firing rates of, I think, 6 shots a minute.

      Nope, the MSTA-S has a semi-automatic loader. You still have to place each individual shell and case to the loader and activate the rammer each time to load, a fully automatic loader would take the shells and cases from the storage automatically. The Koalitsiya-SV does that, however, and ,as you said, it also has the whole loading mechanism and ammo storage separate from the crew.

      @@renzesinia1234 Artillery is a bigger size of a gun, I'm guessing it's a gun larger than 150mm, like 203mm, and in this vid, it's a 155mm gun. In order to fire the shells, or rounds, anything you want to call it, the loader first load a shell into the gun breech, then proceed to load some cordite or "bags" in the color of either green, red, or white, and then close the breech, before firing the gun. Now the topic here are the bags. The purpose of loading the bags are to increase the fire range of the artillery gun, which means that the bags provides more blast power in the gun breech, behind the shell, which then sends higher kinetic energy to the shell, which then allows the shell to travels to a longer distance. The bags are used in the artillery guns because the shells are heavy, and that means that a single propellant in the shell casing isn't enough to provide a longer-distance fire support for the bigger shells. That's why the artillery loader need to load some variable charges, aka separated charges, bags, into the breech as well. For the smaller guns under the diameter of 155mm, the shells are using fixed propellant cartridge in the shell casing, since the fire range can be adjusted by the elevation of the gun.

      @@Kai-ib4cn Not completely true.
      Artillery has nothing to do with the size of the gun but the method of fire. Tanks engage a target they can see directly and artillery shoots further to a target they cannot see but get coordinates to(at least nowadays, not talking about 400 years ago) Bags do not provide more propellant for the shell, the shell itself has absolutely no propellant whatsoever, so the bags are the propellant. You do have a version called "base bleed"in which a small rocket like flame is fired behind the shell, but that is not for propellant but to cancell the air suction effect behind the shell. But what do i know, i only worked with the thing for 8 years :)

      At the time they hadn't designed modular second stage ammunition like today. So the first stage (HE round) could be easily loaded with a comparable simple autoloader, but the second stage (propellant) couldn't be easily loaded with an autoloader. More modern systems from German manufacturers already solved this problem and have developed and automatic artillerysystem with 30 first stage round and I believe, 60 propellant charges. The whole module (Gun plus loader) can easily be put on any chassis and only needs at least 2 people to operate.

      Artillery uses 'fixed' or 'semi-fixed' ammunition for 105mm and smaller. The 155 is too large to have fixed ammo. Also, having the powder separate from the warhead allows them to vary the range they are firing at. They are firing the smallest powder charge these things can use - for short range. The 105 has up to six powder bags inside the semi-fixed ammo which is adjusted when the fire mission is called down to the guns.

      Weight. Those 155mm shells weigh about 100 lbs by themselves. Trying to load that and the propellent all at once would be too much.

    How come a lot of SPGs have a bipod or Monopod that holds the barrel? I assume it is to relieve pressure or stress on the motors or whatever aims the gun whenever you not shooting.

    • @Azreal20

      pretty much that, even some tanks have those, either on the back (turret turned backwards, gun locked , for transportation) or instead under the turret roof to lock the gun.

      Unlike a tank this is highly precise instrument, a millimeter off here makes lots of meters on the target. Think danger close setting, you do not want to be off.
