- Here, we see a set of R142As testing a new brake package, Metroflexx. Metroflexx is WABTEC's newest rapid transit airbrake control system. This video shows the first time these cars ventured out to the Rockaway test track to be put through stopping distance tests. MTA New York City Transit is commendable for following commonly accepted industry best practices by testing and prequalifying new railcar subsystems in this manner!
R142As are "A" division equipment, which runs on the numbered lines and is physically narrower than the wider "B" division equipment that runs on the lettered lines. However, "A" division cars like the R142A are capable of running on "B" division trackage when appropriate arrangements are made. This is an exceptionally rare and unusual occurrence; R142As have not ventured to this part of the system in a very, very long time. Enjoy!

I am a former New Yorker. I was born in Brooklyn and lived there for 36 years. My father worked in the Engineering Department at 370 Jay Street in the early 1960's and my grandfather worked for the system throughout the 1940's and the 1950's! Many of my extended family members also worked for the New York City Transit Authority. One was a manager and one in a supervisory position. The subway system and its history are built into my D.N.A.! So, I do find it out of the ordinary to see an IRT R142 on a stretch of the IND Rockaway line!

The new Metroflexx system has had some early success worldwide since getting launched. It integrates a service brake, emergency brake, wheel slide protection, TCMS communication, advanced diagnostics, and condition based maintenance into 1 product. It also has an extended MTBO of 10 years and the single product can be used with multiple configurations. At the same time, maintanence is supposed to be much simpler and it weighs less. This makes me think it could be introduced with a refurbishment of the R142 or be introduced on the future R262,

@@Rah2005 It might be to make them CBTC compatible. I know that the current HVAC units are gradually being replaced by CRRC Shijiazhuang King Transportation which will be similar to the HVAC on the R179 trains.

Lol, 3 train on the BMT line with a literal IRT R142A is crazy, these consists from the 4 line have never ventured out here since.

The only way the 3 train could realistically get an R142A is if there is an emergency right at the crack of dawn, and an overnight R142A 4 train to New Lots Ave was instructed to have its crew changed for the morning shift and just carry on as the 3 train from there
Or when rush hour ends and it’s going to new lots so it just has to reroute to a (3) train

Sheesh, first an R143 break testing in the Rockaways, and now an R142A as well. Broad Channel has been getting quite a bunch of surprises lately, lol.
Ay R142A (3) via the A line, not actually though that’s not gonna happen, I can see the first 5 cars looks clean but the other 5 cars are extremely dirty and need to be washed, good catch there

I wonder if this is the same set I saw parked at Pitkin yard last week as I was walking up the ramp to linden plaza to visit my aunt 🤔. I was quite shocked to see it there lol had to really peek through the fence to see it to make sure I wasn't going crazy lol.

That cannot run the original 3 line because it’s a wide BMT (9 foot 9) train and cannot fit the narrow IRT. (8 foot 5)
Update: I think it actually is a IRT since I see a gap between platform and doors. 🤔

No R262/As as of yet. They have not found no builders for the R262/As. There's no word on that. The R62AS R62S has to hold on on the 1 3 6 S lines until the Brand New R262/As gets here.

Just like the 2 and 5 share strip maps. The 3 and 4 should also share stripmaps. Since they go to the same place in Brooklyn like the 2 and 5 does in Brooklyn and the Bronx
3 & 4 swapping equipment at New Lots would be more problematic than 2 & 5 at Flatbush

Yes the iRT lines is definitely getting both Equipments R262s open gangways R262As end ways just like the R211As R211s Staten island Rail ways I'm telling you.
The 7 Flushing line is not getting no R262/As because they have all the R142As from the Pelham 6 line and there original R188s six and six car units to make it eleven cars . The R188s R142As is definitely staying put on the 7 Flushing line. That's the reason why they have the R62AS back on the Pelham 6 line.

The r262 prototype should be assigned to the six train and the contract isn't awarded yet, so late 2026 revenue testing

The 6 Pelham line is definitely getting mixed equipments R262As R142As when they get the Brand New R262/As . For now the R62AS R62S has to hang in there on the 1 3 6 S lines until the R262/As comes. We definitely wish that they could of kept the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line running without tairing it down. If they would of kept the 8 Thrid Ave Elevated line running I gareete you the R62AS would of definitely replacing all the R12 R14s R15 s Just like they did on the 1 3 6 S 4 and 7 Flushing lines for the old Redbirds.
That's another reasons why they have those 8 signs on the R62AS R62S and the R142/As . When they deliver the R262As I have a real spriital feeling that they are definitely gonna have the powder blue 🔵 8 Thrid Ave Elevated computer 🖥️ rolling signs I'm telling you.

Did they take a #4 from Jerome yard and transfer it to the Concourse yard to get it on the B division?
Yes. The reason why they had transferred to the B devisins from the Jerome Ave 4 line to picken yards is because they had to upgrade the brakes to be tested on the A line to far Rockaway s and they have the middle track s to test them just like they had the R62AS from the 42 Times Square shuttle using six car units.

They can because they're slim enough. Letter lines can't run on numbered lines because they're wider.
The R142A could come to the 3 when the R262 comes out.

They were testing them for new brakes to replace the old brakes because pretty soon when they start delivering the Brand New R262/As for CBTCS on the 4 5 6 S 3 1 Broadway lines they are definitely gonna be remodified the R142/As cab units and New brakes for CBTCS.

The 142 does go to new lots but only assigned to the 4 line
those R142as look rough from all the vandalism.
The rust on those 142As have not aged well, they need a well-deserved wash
MTA really needs to keep their fleet washed better.
Its most likely a decommissioned train used for testing. I you look careful there are wires taped the that ,in a vertical fashion going up to the windows.
Imagine if MTA did actually put R142A on the 3 Train service, that would've been COOL AF!!!! But unfortunately, i know it'll never happen....

its prob bc its yard doesnt have a car wash and they refuse to take it to another yard to have a wash (which is lame bc it just makes crime within the subway worse since all other ppl perception of nyc subway is it being dingy)
